Initially, I had absolutely no interest in this video; 20 seconds later, I was hooked! I loved your "quick" sketch that was so accurate as a mechanical blueprint, and your craftsmanship is amazing. I loved this video. Thanks. DD
Your Grandpa would be very happy to see the great craftsman you are with so many talents with various tools. Even better you make beautiful functional tools. Thanks for sharing.
In your hands, even the simplest of tools becomes a work of art, worthy of a place in any museum, where those with an eye for beauty, can look at it with awe and inspiration.
Very pretty tool. I’m sure your grandfather would be proud to see his old tools go to great use! Thank you for the fantastic info. I would like to make my own awl now as well!!
Your artistry keeps making this channel so fun to watch. Beautiful awl. Another of the tools you have made that I just have to make for myself. Thank you so much for the wonderful videos.
Love your tools videos. Your attention to detail and inventiveness are inspiring. Thank you. If i may ask, how did you start? Do you build boats for a living or just as a hobby? Thanks again
Very nice, I really like the way you used the bolt for the metal shaft. Mmmmm something to make on a rainy day but alas I don't have a lath. Time to improvise and over come
Do you have a drill press? If yes, then you are 80% of the way to having a lathe. Loads of videos out there on using a drill press for or making a lathe. BTW, a lathe and lathe tools will do the brass too. Carbide lathe tools are slightly better with the brass, but HSS will cut/scrape brass beautifully.
I could hear you much better in this video. Thanks for addressing the vocal volume. Awl looks pretty good. Maybe a square awl next? They work great for poking and for drilling points into wood for a better mark prior to drilling, screwing, or nailing. Just a little wrist twist and you're all marked. Square awls work well for plastics and leather as well.
Great design. Love your idea using the long bolt. I had made an awl similar but not quite as nice. Can you recommend how to resharpen the point? I can't figure a way yet to get it spinning to file or honing stone. Just came across your channel and it looks great. Thanks.
Genuinely beautiful project with a wonderfully documented process. One question though: How much larger should the diameter of the wood be than the ferrule which it accepts?
Hi Scott, I made the wood diameter slightly larger (1/64") than the inside of the ferrule. It is threaded so one could screw it on instead of heating it the way I did. Thanks for watching! Bob
My way of spreading epoxy is with a chop stick sharpen one end in a pencil sharpener the other end flatten with a knife. When epoxy is dry just sharpen and flatten again.
Very nice looking awl. Your other one looks quite unwieldy by comparison, especially for fine marking. Stainless is a good choice for the job too, rather than tool steel.

In your hands, even the simplest of tools becomes a work of art, worthy of a place in any museum, where those with an eye for beauty, can look at it with awe and inspiration.
Truly beautiful and very functional. You are an artisan
I thoroughly enjoy your boat building videos. Your tool making videos are an unexpected and much appreciated bonus! Thank you so much for sharing!
A more accurate motto for me would be, "if you're going to make it, try not to break it."
Great craftsmanship, really enjoy your channel
Love the scotchbrite trick!
Nice job. I also love brass fittings with wood tools, well anything wood, also boats!
Thanks 👍
I would love to see a short video on your workbench.

Flare nut as a ferrule is brilliant.
Great video. Very clear 🇦🇺👴🏻
Nice job!
Bolt in drill for a symmetric shape. Ingenious. Thank you.
Next video when!? Also, what ingenuity!! How impressive to use such common items and shape them into something one of a kind.

I like the design, but I think I'll use a harder steel.
My way of spreading epoxy is with a chop stick sharpen one end in a pencil sharpener the other end flatten with a knife. When epoxy is dry just sharpen and flatten again.
I really love these tool making tangent videos!!! Any thoughts on getting a real metal lathe in the future?
I've been on the look out for a metal lathe have found on yet.
Thanks for watching.
That looks similar to my 1950's Monkey Ward lathe. Sounds like it, too!
xoney She’s not pretty but sure get the job done.
@@TheArtofBoatBuilding yes, indeed. Does yours incorporate a morse taper? Mine doesn't. Rather limiting. But, like you say, gets the job done.
Awesome n sweet
Please send me the details about the brass fitting used. Thanks

how are you doing with riveting frames to floors on haven
Working on them now!
good....can t wait to see how you drill the holes with only 7.5 clearance ...and how to bang on those copper rivets in a close quarters
Why Danish oil vs. BYO? Thanks
Quick question sir, where did you have your logo punch made?
Do you have a good source for olive wood? I'd like to do a woodworking project with it.
I got my olive wood at Woodcraft. Here is a link: www.woodcraft.com/products/olivewood-bethlehem-2-x-2-x-6?via=5d112bea776f6f4e030006e2%2C5d112d06776f6f4e03001245%2C5d113015776f6f2fb900175d
