Awesome, didn’t realise this was a MCM video until it loaded and greeted with Moog! So cool seeing these old video, especially when searching for hints and tips on old Subarus :D
Moog I ended up getting a Forester XT because I saw this video of you when I was in highschool! I love it man and I'd love to see an update on yours, mines an sg so it's not quite the same but close
some quick reasons why is.. when you increase your boost the stock BOV might not be able to hold the preasure and there for you will gain some effect by switching it, also if your BOV doesnt vent the air quick enough it can surge in the impeller and damage it etc.. but its mainly for the swagfactor and to hold more boost! Love your channels mcm!
+sufferbyme actually i dont think thats 100% true, the air isnt coming back from the compressor .. the compressor is starting to cut the air. because the pressured air has nowhere to go . that makes the sutututu sound.
if setup well it will be closed at idle so idle will stay the same, on boost still closed, normal driving still closed. it only open when you back off the gas and then it will most likely throw a little puff of black smoke and nothing more. might colour your bumber if its white and may 'pop' but theres no issues in that. and its not only subarus, all factory cars with a maf metered air intake will do this with it venting to air
Yes, it vents excess inlet pressure when backing off the throttle. If you actually watched the video, you would notice you can have 100% recirculating flow back into the intake, without the 'stupid' sound. This can replace the stock Bypass Valve, which can be faulty and is needed especially for higher boost levels.
The more air that the BOV can vent the more boost you can run. A bov is a supporting mod like an intercooler. Whether it goes to armosphere or plumbed back for 99% of cars it is a sound thing. However on some ultra high performance cars running 30+psi boost venting to both might be suitable.
except on an Evo, all Sub's have top mount intercoolers unless you do a mod and make it front mount. if so the poistion of the BOV would change to your mod design. else as in this case it gets fixed to the factory posi
Yes, because if you went the air out there's not enough air going into the engine which will make the car run rich on fuel. If the car run rich on fuel it will eventually start backfireing and that can seriously damage your catalyst.
jaakko200987654321 Well, you can obviously not damage your catalyst anymore...but, your car will still run rich on fuel. In other words, the car will probably not run as well as it used to just right before the modification, it may be noticeable, maybe it isn't.
Can you MCM dudes give your thoughts on installing a BOV on an auto/tiptronic 2002 twin turbo Subaru B4? I understand the "whoosh" sound won't be heard when shifting because it's an auto but when I release the gas pedal will it make any noise? Is it worth the time? Could you guys try it? Yeah, I know it's an auto but it's my first car, lol. Thanks
So I have a TTS and it has a built in waste gate I think. When you come of the power and/or up shift without keeping the power on you hear a loud POP from the exhaust. Apparently this is the waste gate at work - plus a small amount of petrol that the TTS dribbles into the exhaust to the ignited too. So my question is - does a BOV do anything when one already has a waste gate that dumps into the exhaust?
Careful Moog Subarus run rich with a VTA BOV too much out the trumpet will cause a rough idle an hella rich running. In some cases it'll even backfire and crackle. The ecu accounts for the extra air coming from the recirculation, without it it has too much fuel. I'm sure you know all this from being mates with Marty, just offering advice if maybe you didn't. P.s. love MCM you guys rule!
Hey man I love ur videos I got a question I have a 04 wrx and I just got a new turbo xs bov and wen I put it on and pug the house is sounds good but it runs like crap it's stock no big mods just a Cold air intake and a muffler any help would be much appreciated thank you
I have no idea what "pug the house" was supposed to mean, but I'm assuming you've set it to vent entirely to atmosphere. I'd be willing to be your engine is running a bit rich due to the BOV, or an air leak due to an improper installation. If it ran fine before the BOV, then you know it's the BOV.
That was well done.. well done MOOG and keep up the small vids man as they are as entertaining as the dynamic duo vids that you have with marty. Good stuff. Also can you start looking into fuel alternatives of even the possibility of turning one of the cars into a hybrid at all../ HHO might be an interesting project as i hear it can actually promote better fuel economy as well.
MCM , did you think in my 240sx if i put 100% recirculating, this gonna be sound like flutter turbo ( zutututu ) ? I got a BOV Blitz who do the flutter sound but i want to make it louder In total gas it's sound like ( pshiiit )
Drift and Track you get the flutter by removing the valve altogether. This way, the air has nowhere to go once the throttle is closed, and it flutters back and forth between the turbo and the throttle plate. Beware that this can wear out your turbo faster though :)
Phazer FourtySeven Basically, don't do it unless you're willing to risk damaging your turbo. It sounds cool, but it's just going to make your performance worse if anything.
Okay i dont no much about subaru's.. But i have a subaru legacy and i hv a turbo sitting in my gaurage. So wih a turbo can it go on any car? Like a legacy? Id like two but idk much about turbos but iv always wanted one on my car. Ik that sti and stuff hv em and the legacy and sti wrx ect. Engine kinda look the same just a lil diff. Do you have to have a modified wrx to put one of these in? My cars stock and I want one but everyone around me says you need 22psi for any subaru wrx bov mod mcmtv2
No, not really. As the MAF is metering the amount of air going through the intake, any discharge of this metered air will cause overfuelling issues. No amount of tuning can account for this air which has been lost to atmosphere.
brandon banks The amount of boost has nothing to do with it. In all honesty, it probably won't blow up your car, but venting to atmosphere will change the fuel mixture somewhat. It may just run rich, blow a bit of fuel out the exhaust and try to stall after backing off. Just doing it to have a 'cool' noise isn't really worth it.
HOT40K However, this rich condition is said to last under a second even on 100% atmosphere.. So the loss of fuel/efficiency is quite minimum. This is also not measured to be giving an exact figure. However, long term I believe saving your Turbo is more important than burning abit of extra fuel
Riz Amith Yeah, but the car can run like crap still. Whether venting to atmosphere or recirculating, the affect on the turbo life will be the same. As long as a BPV/BOV is used, it'll be fine,.
+Favian Figueroa having a bov doesn't damage your engine. some people say not having a bov can shorten the life of the turbo (but that is a highly debated topic). The BOV's purpose is to prevent compressor surge to reduce wear on the turbo.

What is the benefits if any of having a blow off valve? I actually thought the main reason people had them installed was for the added sports performance sound???? - 2013 WRX Sedan Driver here
Trust me, you do not want to put a BOV on our Subarus, unless you are heavily tuned you will not benefit form one. Our cars come with a BPV not BOV. Here have a read, I'm not part of this club.....Im part of a local Subaru Club in Toronto but this thread is useful for knowledge. forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=468038
Supposedly, BOV's and Bypass Valves (they're 2 different things) works the same way in that they reduce compressor stall. Basically, you have air getting into the engine to combust with gas. The mechanism controlling that air is the throttle (controlled by the gas pedal). When you are changing gears or take your foot off the throttle, the air suddenly stops flowing and gets backed up since the valve gets closed. This is where BOV's come in and release that air. Turbos boost that air pressure and allow more volumes of air per combustion. BOV's will release any unnecessary air that can cause compressor stall in your car. Bypass Valves (BPV's) do almost the same thing except the air is routed into the exhaust manifold in order to recirculate rather than into the atmosphere. BPV's do not give off sound. If you would like a very loud car, consider installing an anti-lag system instead to keep your turbo spooling and for loud explosions out your exhaust.
Do not install a BOV or BPV in your car if you do not have a turbo installed. It will serve no purpose to you and will be a waste of money. There won't be enough air pressure for either of them to work.

I love how descriptive this video is! Thanks MIghty Car Mods!!
Thanks for the vid, very helpful. I am about to order this part for my 09 MY WRX here in the US, and the install looks so simple!
My TurboSmart BlowOffValve is set on more softer then hard, I change gears at 2-3 rpm and you still hear the Blowoff , great setting to put on
Woah! Awesome stuff Moog! Can't believe how far you guys have come.
its sooo cool to see moog showing some love to his Subaru :D
This kind of short segments of tips are awesome!!!!

What is different in B.O.V.'s that make the sound "stututututu" instead of this "pssssss"?

I think it might just be a grade 7 bolt. Its the alloy the piece itself is made of, and I imagine it has to be strong to hold a good amount of boost.

Right on man..ive got a turbo smart bov i imagine installation is spot on. thanks for the quick no nonsense video....cheers!
I have a 2002 Audi A6 biturbo and this helped me so dang much
Does the BOV work on a Subaru Forester Turbo automatic? I mean, would the characteristic sound come out? Thanks for your responses!
Ive got an XT MY09 auto. The sound does come out 👌
Not a problem. Stay boosted my friend.
Does the position of the Blow Of Valve change with a front mount intercooler ?

Do you have to install Cold air intake as well for that beautiful ptsuuuuh sound ?
Now this is what RUclips should be about.
"dial it back if it backfires" hell no i wont because who doesnt want flames coming out of the exhaust
I'm pretty sure air doesn't make flames come out of your exhaust bub

How does the amount of air venting effect the performance of the car? Or is this mod purely for sound and does it not effect the performance?
I love these little mini episodes!! keep it up guys!! :) Also im thinking of getting Coilovers, do you reckon you got do a video on that?
Hey dude great videos, thanks. Will this fit an 08 Forester XT?
the beat when you are replacing the BOV is awesome! i want that.
Was this video filmed before the coilover install ? Looks a little high just wondering .
a video or even a small segment for my 2009 corolla s would be so awesome of you guys. I want to see the way in which headers would be installed.

It sends the pressured air out when you close off the throttle. It's explained much better in their blow off valve video on mightycarmods.
Could this help the car or cause problems with warranty?
What a great video mate well done!

Yea, it releases its pressure whenever you let go of the gas, even in an automatic.
it will if it has a turbo
