Brakes. On 2-lever machines (with automatic clutches and transmissions) the left hand lever controls the rear brakes and the right hand lever controls the front brakes. Why did it evolve that way? Because motorcycles and manual-shift ATVs use the left hand lever for the clutch, the right lever for the front brake, while the rear brake is operated by a foot pedal.
@TheHondaAbuser Sorry about that. There were two sets of Ranchers in 2005, the 'older' model 330s in foot shift and ESP, and the 'new' 400 ATs. You are no doubt looking at the older style 330.
That's a really tough decision for me to make for you......It depends on your specific tastes and desires. Both are really good machines and I don't think you'd be sorry with either one. Of course that all depends on their condition as well.
@javaleira The test started at 1:07 but I suppose if you couldn't wait for that to go by, or even skip through it, why bother watching a test? Probably should just find some pictures to look at.....
Depending on your age and how and where you plan to ride the Recon is most likely a tad too small. While the Rancher is a bit more it would no doubt prove to be a far better machine for you - especially if you can swing the extra money for a 4wd model.
my honda rancher 350 es 4x4 has 4000 miles on it and i change the oil and filter every now and then and i have had no problems and i a little ruff on it t times i have to say it has endured it well.
The Rancher (as well as other simple, foot-shift, swingaxle ATV's like the Big Bear and the King Quad 400) are great work machines but will lack the comfort and oomph for great trail explorers - unless you're the slow and scenic type. Doug
Just bought 2010 Rancher AT 4x4,full independent suspension,replaced my Polaris 800,to many electrical,overheating problems in the Polaris ... I rather have a smaller dependable atv ,than a monster ATV that breaks down much....
@jackapeople yes, it will spin a tire. those little bikes are impressive. i don't ride a recon, but they will go! you ever ridden a recon? fun little quad. it's a shame that they weren't offered with 4wd...like the yamaha timberwolf.
this is a test of a 2006 400AT? i have a 2004 400AT (the first year of this model), and even though i did the recall i still have issues sometimes where at low speed in automatic it puts it into too high of a gear ratio with a little load (climb a hill and it puts it in "5th gear" ratio), so i have to stop and then hear it downshift. did the 2006 not have any of these issues? could i put an ECM from a 2006 in mine and solve this problem. have brought it to my dealer and they can't solve it
Is a honda recon too small for someone 6'1 230lbs. I am looking for a trail rider, the prices used are so much better than the rancher but I am afraid I will be let down with the smaller size. I've never owned an atv before. BTW the atv tv website is great!!
@javaleira Well I guess you win..... I give up! I won't make you watch even one more of our videos..... I might suggest (just in passing) that if there is a new video posted that you 'might!' want to watch, have a friend watch it first and tell you what it's like.
EXACTLY! its so dumb that they think they need "low range" all that is, is 1st gear. anybody with half a brain can put the thing in 1st and do w/e needs to be done.
Hondas are well known for their incredible reliability.
Such a great resource when looking for info on older models.
I'd love to see you review a new, updated Rancher. I love my 2016, and I'd love your perspective on the ten years newer machine. Great review.
I have a 2007 and it is great!

For the same reason Jeeps and other 4 wheel drives need a low range - sometimes you just need that added leverage to creep over difficult obstacles.
@TheHondaAbuser Sorry about that. There were two sets of Ranchers in 2005, the 'older' model 330s in foot shift and ESP, and the 'new' 400 ATs. You are no doubt looking at the older style 330.
I'm thinking about getting a Honda Rancher here in the next year or two, I'm trying to get my research done, are they reliable?
That's a really tough decision for me to make for you......It depends on your specific tastes and desires. Both are really good machines and I don't think you'd be sorry with either one. Of course that all depends on their condition as well.
They are both very reliable and both about as capable as each other. Check to see if the Grizzly has a 2wd/4wd selector. That would make a difference.
@dreambrew Rancher. The 360 Prairie is kinda buzzy and under-powered. It does have a locker though and is very stable.
@gaspajr I would probably say a utility since you can haul payload much easier and you dont have to worry about drive chains to often with a utility
@javaleira The test started at 1:07 but I suppose if you couldn't wait for that to go by, or even skip through it, why bother watching a test? Probably should just find some pictures to look at.....
@TylersGlory that's right if you ride a mountain bike or a 10-speed or something.
Yes, but exactly what depends on where you live. Check you'll local DMV.
Yes, it will switch from 2wd to 4wd while moving.

@TheHondaAbuser The 2005 Rancher was also a 400.
@1000brycen There are also 2WD Ranchers.
@TheHondaAbuser Sorry no test. The '05 was the same as this!
Rancher 800?
oh yeah, it would make a big difference if your going over logs, i have a rancher made a big difference to mine for suree
why would you need a low range selection when you have the esp mode and can put it first gear for tough hills and such
Sorry, we only keep the ATVs we test for that year. Maybe somebody that owns one and put a bunch of miles on it can help you.
@LiamCumby Nope. It wouldn't make much difference for any of that and just make the machine more tippy and less reliable.
@rumerofhumor Better at what? Which? Where? Do you really have to ask?
How about the King Quad 400? Or the Grizzly 550? Or the King Quad 500?
@CrimsonBloodStar Yes.
Just bought 2010 Rancher AT 4x4,full independent suspension,replaced my Polaris 800,to many electrical,overheating problems in the Polaris ...
I rather have a smaller dependable atv ,than a monster ATV that breaks down much....
i got a question if you still have this four wheeler and have driven it alot... is your transmission slipping out of gear and making a grinding noise?
@Knox48x no diff lock....just learn how to use the front brakes to control the front diff.
@jackapeople yes, it will spin a tire. those little bikes are impressive. i don't ride a recon, but they will go! you ever ridden a recon? fun little quad. it's a shame that they weren't offered with 4wd...like the yamaha timberwolf.
@justinbeiberinC4 USed to be The Outdoor Channel. Now it's here and our website.
@12m34w12 what aftermarket diff do you have? let me know because i've been looking into them.
this is a test of a 2006 400AT? i have a 2004 400AT (the first year of this model), and even though i did the recall i still have issues sometimes where at low speed in automatic it puts it into too high of a gear ratio with a little load (climb a hill and it puts it in "5th gear" ratio), so i have to stop and then hear it downshift. did the 2006 not have any of these issues? could i put an ECM from a 2006 in mine and solve this problem. have brought it to my dealer and they can't solve it
im considering this quad does it have enough power to do some mud pits and hill climbs as in the 2009 version
@ATVTVCOM it says 400 in your info andthe 05 is a 350?
do all the 350 rancher from 2004 to 2006 have fourwheel drive??
@gdhuber yes
man you guys need a 2010 or 2009 honda rancher at test. im thinking of one.
I took the honda and it looks good
What's the difference between this rancher 400 and the rancher 420
But wich should i buy: 2008 rancher 400 or 2011 grizzly 350, both for same price
Prairie 360 or rancher 350 for hunting. Which is better?
@LiamCumby I really don't know used values that much. I'd look through the local ads or Cycle Trader dot Com to look at comparables.
@TheDonmaster99 Yes.
do you have 1 for a 05 trx350? if you dont whats your opinion on 1
@MrJahhead i highly dought that the engine is shot in a honda

I remember when this was a big quad
@trx500fm1 Ah, a Recon 4wd! I always wished they'd build one .
@javaleira Well I guess you win..... I give up! I won't make you watch even one more of our videos..... I might suggest (just in passing) that if there is a new video posted that you 'might!' want to watch, have a friend watch it first and tell you what it's like.
Still its a good starter ATV
That grizzly has a red button on the right, i think that is the 2wd/4wd selector
I have a 2010 Honda (420 AT),I miss my big bore 500/800 atvs.....
@atvtv I have a 2006 4x4 450cc rancher, what type of oil should it take
+Tyler Pitman Most use Honda GN4 10W40
Ok thank you

@rumerofhumor i think there both good
i would use the auto transmission like 90 precent of the time
That should be it.
@shmuckseason No
@Derek130b Nope.
@bukaty1 But no breakdowns either ;-)
@oscar17211 I imagine that you bought the Recon used. . .which could perhaps be the reason it was such a pile ;-)
