A WARHAMMER Killer? Conquest Can’t Be Overlooked!

  • This week I ditch Warhammer for a very exciting alternative! Conquest is something that has been coming up more and more lately, and I happened to find a pretty good deal on a resin model for this game. I also have no actual need for it since I decided on buying into a different faction, so I thought I'd save this model and ship it off to Goobertown for his new Dwarf army.

    Not a Warhammer killer. It does its own thing just fine but they feel like very different games. Also that dwarf lord guy has a plastic version according to their store, so they're not just limited to resin minis. And when they are, I assume it's better quality than GW's cruddy resin.
    While it's got some very high quality minis, their scale is awkward. You can't use them as Warhammer proxies and you can't mix them with DnD-purpose GW + Frostgrave etc minis for it. It's a pity really, some of these would make for quality player avatars.
    Another thing that stands out to me is that on the site you don't get to see their sprues. Their site is also pretty sluggish and there's no GBP currency version available.

    • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  2 года назад +5

      I'd definitely say that the resin is better than most of the FW models I've gotten. Really smooth and the details are good. Still, I'm glad they are switching to plastic for some of them because it's just easier to work with. The scale is weird to get used to, but I ended up with a ton of extra bits off of the sprues and the more true scale nature of these models makes it seem like I could easily put some of the weapons and arms onto an AOS model and it wouldn't look out of place.
      I didn't even think about the sprues on the website, that would be a nice addition to see in the future. The company is still young, but I think they are really going places, and small upgrades like that, as well as a faster site, more currencies, etc., are probably things we will eventually see.

      The prices aren't that different from GW, but I think that's just where things are at for premium polystyrene models these days. Even Wizkids is charging a premium for their Frameworks kits that compete in the same space. I don't know if that will ever change unless GW changes, and we know that won't happen any time soon, unfortunately.

    • @toferkrz946
      @toferkrz946 2 года назад

      We're living in different times. With the price of manufacture and shipping going up exponentially, the gap between geedub and other companies' products has definetly narrowed. When you factor in the wide availability of geedub stuff at discount retailers, a large variety of bundle products like battleboxes and launch sets and the saturation of the secondary market, it's really becoming hard to argue that geting into a geedub game is so outragously expensive compared to competitors.
      Even Mantic Games, who essentially built their entire market presence on being 'budget Warhammers', nowadays isn't that far off in prices per roughly equivalent model or book. It's the same with all tabletop stuff to be honest, even worse if you live somewhere in Europe where the current currency exchange rates are not favorable. Where I live, Star Wars Legion Core Sets are now going for almost twice the price they were released at with no changes in the contents. Players are now asked to fork out almost 200 dollars for a highly produced boardgame like the new Descent or Twilight Imperium or Eclipse or whatever, when ten or even five years ago, an equivalent game would have been around eighty bucks.
      Meanwhile, geedub prices are staying mostly the same, with infrequent and usually small adjustments of a quid or two on a box every couple years. This all combines into a situation where, after you factor in readily available retailer discounts, 60$ MSRP for a squad of Stormcast or Space Marines, or 200$ for a big battlebox no longer sounds like such a hard ask as it did in, say, 2019.

    • @anakon
      @anakon 2 года назад

      They look too high until you calculate how much you need for an army. For First Blood (the skirmish version) an army box gets you a full army and decent force for the rank and file version. A full army for the rank and file version would cost around 300-400. Now calculate that for GW :)

    • @toferkrz946
      @toferkrz946 2 года назад

      Sadly that is just wishful thinking. I have a friend trying to pull me into Conquest, Ive done the math. A lot of very meticulous math. The only way youre getting a full 2000pt conquest army for 300-400 bucks is if you just copy and paste the cheap Spires/100K models from the core box three or four times, and that wont really make for an interesting and ebjoyable game. Besides, you can do the same thing by buying two halves of a launch set, like Dominion Stormcasts or Indomitus Marines or whatever, which would probably run you even cheaper overall.
      When you factor in geedubs bundle sets (which are a lot more varied and generous than conquests, outside of the 2p starter), retailer discounts (which are not available for conquest in many places in the world) and the secondary market (which is pretty much non existent for conquest outside of people splitting the starter), the numbers become quite comparable. Theres give either way of course, you can build a janky 250 bucks 40k or Sigmar army and you can make an insanely expensive conquest army, but on the whole, the two product lines roughly meet in the middle.
      The only significant saving you get with Conquest is the rules, since you still need to pay geedub for codexes and such. But even there, you have room to manouever - they strted offering core rules for a lot of their games for free, you can get the codex unlock codes very cheap from people that don't use the apps, there's a lot of books on the secondary market etc. In their comparisons, people often omit the fact that this isn't just about counting up full MSRP for all the stuff. You have a lot of options to get bargains, deals, discounts and workarounds with geedub stuff. Not so for Conquest. Where I live (central Europe), Para Bellum stuff is only available at full MSRP at a grand total of two different retailers.
      The First Blood argument is a bit disengenous because.at that point, you are comparing a skirmish variant to a full battle game. If you put First Blood next to Kill Team or Warcry, the comparison becomes a lot less favorable. The new First Blood starter set is roughly the price of a Warcry/Kill Team big box (again, before discounts, you can find great deals for geedub stuff but not as much for Para Bellum sets) and while it comes with more models, I'm not sure it's still gonna be enough for a full game while the geedub offering is still better quality, comes with a shedload of terrain, loads of additional accessories and enough miniatures for a full play experience.
      Conquest is a cool game with cool mechanics and an interesting product line. But let's be real, it's not significantly cheaper to play a full game than geedub's offerings and the models, while better than their initial releases, are still several years behind the manufacturing, design and casting quality of geedub, to which literally nothing else in the market can compare.

    • @KRdHaene
      @KRdHaene 2 года назад

      @@anakon It's almost like the industry as a whole has moved forward together, producing miniatures and accompanying terrain to match a narrow band of scale. 28 - 32 mm true scale or heroic. With SW Legion being the only real outlier, yet still fits 40k scale terrain.
      It's the same reason I don't care to get into Titanicus or Epic: I'd rather not have to purchase an entire new set of terrain to play one game system with.
      3rd party miniatures are also easier to purchase. Easier to test out a game system with models you already have. There's a reason most of the Conquest models went on discontinued sale a few months from when they released. Most rank and file folks are playing Game of Thrones, 9th Edition, or Kings of War.

    • @SciFiPorkChop28

      I think the problem here is that AOS and Conquest are actually pretty different games... Conquest really is appealing to those WFB players (Olde Worlde?) and not really trying to take the spot of AOS...
      There is some debate about the First Blood Skirmish game vs AOS... but scale of # of models is vastly different.
      The other big difference which can't be overlooked is Conquest is NOT an "I-go-with-everything-then-you-go" with a bit of an turn initiative tweak... it's full alternating activation and honestly, that's a way bigger selling point for me than the GW standard. So I think they are really very different games and you could easily play AOS and Conquest (assuming you want that collection!)... lol

    Ever since I played my first game of Xwing, I realized that alternating turn games like warhammer were a thing of the past.
    Activation like Conquest using cards for units, the pilot skill like Xwing, or the stacked actions from Armada FAR and away a more engaging game to play.
    Rather than two roughly equal armies taking turns to fully hammer each other back and forth through 3 phase turns decimating both sides, games that allow for customizable activations or actions let tactics be the center of the gameplay rather than dice.
    The sooner we as wargamers move away from the GW standard and into this new paradigm of gameplay the better.

They do a pretty good job at listening to their community and have made changes in the past, you should see what their old boxes looked like, you didn't even know what you were buying, but now they present it more like we are used to, so there's hope that they will continue to upgrade and make things like this a non-issue!

    If I buy the 2 player set can I play forever without buying anything else?
    If I bought a 2 player set and a 1 player set for each Faction, how big of an army would that be?
    If I bought a 2 player set, in 5 years or less, would I need to buy new armies just to be able to play? Similar to magic the gathering?
    What do I need to buy to play Argument of kings and First blood?
    I've never played any game like this and don't know anyone who does but I'm really wanting to get into this. Thank you for any help.

    • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  Год назад +1

      If you buy a 2 player set then you have everything you need to play, forever. The rules are free online so you can access the most recent book as well as the skirmish game First Blood, and the models are already compatible with that, it's just a skirmish variation on the main game.
      You don't need to buy anything else for either unless you want to add to the size of your army. Even in 5 years, everything should still work, even if there is an update to an army or unit, since the rules are free, so are the updates.
      Miniature games in general aren't like MTG, so a new set isn't required every few months or even years. I've been in and out of miniature games for more than 20 years and I can still use the first minis I ever bought if I want! That being said, there's always a meta, much like Magic, but that only really matters if you want to play super competitively.
      Conquest is super fun, and the people who make it are really awesome folks. If you've never played a game like this then you are definitely starting on a great foot!

      Statues would work, but you might be surprised how closely things match up even in 28mm. Conquest seems to be more 38mm true scale, so the heads and arms are a little bit smaller, unlike Warhammer where things are heroic scale so the arms and heads are beefy.

      Yes, different materials have different finishes. I am waiting for my City States starter box to arrive. Although I own a quite large vintage WHFB dwarves army, I won't play The Old World, because I absolutely don't agree with GW's business practices. They simply use their game systems as a vehicle to sell more models. The faction with the most recent army book is always the strongest, to boost sales, and every few years you have to buy a new rulebook and a new army book, with the latter most likely making your top performing units from the now old army book swapping places with the low performing units, also to boost sales.
    For Conquest I only have to buy the models, which are not cheap compared to model ranges for historical setting, but still muß cheaper than typical GW models. Conquest rules and army lists are available as free downloads. And they also offer a very easy to use online army builder.
    If I should come to the conclusion that I don't like Conquest, I can use the models for, for example, Osprey's Dragon Rampant.

      The models I was building had a good amount of head and arm options. It's still rank and file, so bodies are limited, which I wish was different, but I get it. I did end up with an absolute ton of leftover bits, and I like that a lot. The character models are pretty static, but even seeing the new kits that are coming out it looks like that's changing, they look more dynamic and come with extra bits. The takeaway for me is that the company is growing and listening to its audience, and that bodes very well for the future of this line.

      Like some have said, it's cheaper to produce than the polystyrene models, so they opted for that method for the fancier models. That being said, they are taking a lot of those older models, if not all of them, and making them into way nicer plastic kits. The model I worked on in this video just got that treatment and the model looks very nice in comparison, it even addressed the issues I had with some of the details and made them much nicer! The more popular this game has gotten, so has the quality of its models. They definitely seem to be using their profit to create an even better game, and that feels great for the longevity of this game.

    It's always refreshing seeing people step away from Games Workshop. While they dominate the market space in fantasy/sci-fi wargaming, they have - by far - the very worst games. Their lore and models are generally very good. Rules-wise, they're stuck in the 1990's compared to most games - even indie games - of today. This excludes their business practice which is actually based on writing poor rules - as this is the excuse to sell you a new version of the game every 2-3 years, and sell you updated errata books every year, etc. They'll remain the dominant market leader simply because they've now become the "easy" game to buy and own and play. Much like D&D (which is not a good role-playing game), GW's games are the easiest games to find opponents for...and the easiest ones to find at local shops. That juggernaut will keep rolling and people will keep playing massively lazy/underwhelming rules with them.

    • @adriend7134
      @adriend7134 2 года назад +3

      First I would like say that I have some bias. Always have been a big fan of GW games (fantasy side) and I am selling some of them (as independant retailer focusing on GW products but not GW afiliated: I welcome every game systems on our tables). But, besides, I have been trying - for years - for decades ;-) - different wargames including non GW ones and I tend to disagree: 1. GW has various game systems including some (Necromunda, warcry, Underworlds, Kill Team...) with rules being very similar to other trendy "lighter" games (using ping pong activations per units, cards etc). GW is very much aware about what works and also pick here and there - as they naturally all do - to update their systems. 2. The master games of GW (40K and AOS) have rules being often updated. Rules of today that have nothing to see with the ones 10 years ago (not even 5 years ago). Some people can argue that the multiplication of corrections / Faq is because of a lack of attention or because of bad sale motivation :-). BUT, we can also argue the games to be very "alive", always evolving (also based on the comments by players...) with the continuous adjustments also resulting from their complexity. Complexity ? Depth. The latest version of AOS is excellent. EXCELLENT. These main games of GW have a depth than most of others don't have (including the GW lighter ones which I am no fan of). Some other games can be fun, very fun, even more fun if you want, but you play few games and that's it, you have seen it all and the fun fades away (my case for instance, if the rules are too simple then I will feel bored quickly). 3. GW doesn't have only some of the best models around. They have also an incredible power to bring new stuff at an incredible rate. As a hobbist this is great to have this incredible choice instead of waiting for a meagre addition once in a while. 4. This is not because it is easier to find an opponent that you will find more people playing GW games. I especially disagree about this point. The groups of players I know on Infinity or Ice and Fire or Stargrave or Star wars Legion or whatever are also most of them (I would roughly say 90%) coming back from time to time to GW. Not because they can't find opponents for their other games. No. Because anyway they always feel the need, somehow, to come back to the main game...If you ignore this then you miss one of the reasons why GW is a power house today. 5. This is also not because you can find the game more easily at your local store. Many independant retailers support a lot of various game systems, and there is not only your local store for you to discover/buy new game systems (for instance...) 6. I would conclude by saying: In 35 years of hobby I have seen many so called "better games than GW games" (or better than D&D). The fantasy/sci-fi wargames ? They all died. Even when GW was not the power house it is today. They didn't die because of GW. They died because.... people abandonned them. They were not great enough to last, after all.

    All of my hobby money for the last year switched to Conquest. The early sculpts are a bit rough, but the new ones are as good if not better than GW. They also don't hate their community and content creators, so there's that.

    I stumbled upon Conquest during a game Expo. The quality of some of the sculptures really caught my eye and I would love to use them as proxies from some WH Fantasy units. However, their pricing is absolutely insane, at least where I live. 40 pounds for a 10 man squad of regular infantry?! 50 pounds for a 3 man command retinue?! Every hero unit at 20< pounds?! They are as bad as(often worse than) GW when it comes to prices. I wish all the best to this game and appreciate the quality, but this is a premium, PREMIUM kind of a product. Even through the lens of Warhammer, which has been trying its best to price its players out of the game in recent years...

      Agreed, the models are too expensive to get people to move over from WH, theyre also bigger than the GW ones, so you'd need to buy an entire army in one go rather than use proxies, or they'd look odd.

      They are definitely premium. I just bought a cavalry squad of 3 guys for $40 US. I would say that at least where I live, and on eBay, the prices could be worse, certainly better of course, but a lot worse in terms of where they sit for quality. I have a feeling that the bigger they get though, the better the prices will be. They are still paying a ton of money to have their models made properly, and that only gets cheaper when they sell more models. I'm gonna remain as optimistic as I can and hope that that will happen in the future.

    models look great! but what size are the bases? to me it looks 30ish but its hard to tell

    • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  2 года назад

      Most of the infantry are still on 25mm bases, which is a little weird for the scale, but the rank and file nature makes them all fit together on the trays. The cavalry and larger monster models are on much larger bases though, 40mm for most, and bigger for the really big stuff. Still smaller than you might expect though.

    I was hoping that my FLGS would start carrying Conquest when they moved into a massive new store. No such luck, but I'll just have to work on the owner

      If there’s enough of a reason to buy into it or the owner then they usually will. One of my local stores bought in pretty hard because there was a demand from a small group of players. Now they have game days for conquest and escalation leagues. Really cool to see the growth from nothing to a full on community!
