My first time spearfishing in the Mediterranean 5 years ago was an enormously steep learning curve. Coming from Australia the fish are big, plentiful and not particularly hard to spear. The Med is a totally different ball game. I've always wanted to spear a solid dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus) and this one was not a straightforward capture. Thanks Shrek, it was just the jacket, 5mm pants. Some guys were in full 8.5mm with a vest. The water is 12-13°C on the bottom. Also no current & no swell means you’re basically laying perfectly still on the surface breathing up. Easy to get cold!

i have been trying to hunt these groupers for some years now in croatia, only ever got to see little ones in shooting distance (1.5kg ish), those i always just leave alone, or big ones just looked at me from afar, impossible for me to come close enough though.

What’s like the best way to get into the European spearfishing community… because I would love to meet some people to spearfish with (but I’m a newbie so…)
I just started showing up to competitions and meeting people that way. First one was the Öresund cup in Denmark which is a great competition to attend.

Just the jacket. When you’re in the med with a thermocline that is 12-13°C and laying still on the surface breathing up you can get cold easily.
Love these videos from the med, u got any tips on how to hunt in greece when i can hold my breath for 1-2 min and dive up to 10 meters?

Never in Europe. But in the U.K. there are porbeagle sharks and blue sharks but rarely encountered. I once saw a smooth hound which is kind of like a shark.
What!?! You finally take a freediving course and you don't have a video breaking down your thoughts on the course? Some of us have been asking you to take a freediving course for years! :-). Let's have a breakdown as to what you (and maybe your wife) thought was good about it and whether you recommend it for someone new to the underwater world... Please.
It was so we could train with a freediving club at our local pool. Learned a lot of new things for sure. Maybe a video for winter.

Since when has 16 degree water need a 7 mill for. Here in nz that’s spa in the sea
That’s the surface temp. Drops to about 12-13 below the thermocline. Sitting on the surface breathing up with no current to fight or swell you can get very relaxed and then also cold. Dario was in an 8.5mm jacket, 2mm undervest and 6.5mm pants!

Why is it a bad idea to variable weight for max depth?
Because you can go deeper than your limits easily. Not only that you can have equalisation troubles which are hard to stop for when using this method.

I like your videos Dan and have enjoyed many of them. You always talk about how sustainable spearing is which I admire. So it was hugely disappointing to see you targeting this species which is vulnerable to extinction. Also, how sustainable a method of killing fish is constantly flying around the globe to do it?
Its illegal to spearfish with a torch in Italy, makes it too easy and drastically reduces fish numbers by hitting their home hiding spots.
