    Pentecostal here. We don’t believe in adding to the word of God. Some may. But some reformed guys believe in double predestination so I’m not going to lump all you guys in one group . On another note i believe Pentecostals could learn to hold doctrine as more important.

    • @classicchristianliterature

      Point of clarification - All reformed guys believe in double predestination. God chooses some to eternal life and passes over others.

    • @doctor1alex
      @doctor1alex 4 месяца назад

      Well actually it depends how you define “double predestination”. The uncommon view that God with equal measure/symmetry brings some to salvation and others to reprobation is not the orthodox reformed one.
      Additionally back in the time of the reformation there were a lot more people believing what we would today call “hypothetical universalism”.

    • @classicchristianliterature
      @classicchristianliterature 4 месяца назад +2

      @@doctor1alex true but that’s properly called “equal ultimacy” and not double predestination. That people have confounded the 2 is unfortunate and has made the discussion more complicated than it needs to be. Basically reformed folks are not Lutherans with regard to predestination in which it “only goes one way”. We affirm both election AND reprobation. As you stated, it is not the orthodox view to say that God brings about the elect and reprobate states in the same way. His Spirit actively regenerates the elect and brings them from death to life. He passes over the reprobate, He withdraws His grace and they become hardened in their sin.

    Love the channel sir! And long live the faith, we are all standing together in common love for the Lord Jesus Christ. I love that we are all holding persistent to this common seeking for Jesus every single day, greater than the vying for perfect denomination, is the daily love of Christ having precedence, in these times it almost couldn't be any more dire. I'm grateful, I say this as a Catholic, if some believers have it in mind to circumvent tapping in to theologians, discerning right traditions (and this is a burdensome predicament), this life with God is simple in all things firstly. I am thickly embedded in long standing liturgy of deep seated tradition. But the spiritual life is for the increase of Jesus Christ as number one priority, think John the Baptist when he proclaims "He must increase!!! (I must decrease)". So finding proximity to Jesus in the best way that we can discern should be what comes a.s.a.p! All else can easily be downstream, finding our home in religious life comes easily after the moment we have found our home (which is where we can tell: 'Christ is HERE!'). I want dearly to make this statement, given our conflict and infighting is of the devil, even overbearing and unending discernment habits as they too-much-so dominate the mind, this is on my heart right now, so weariness of certain traditions is sound and valid. But rather than being dominated by certain discernments, even given the immense importance of discernment and theological determinations(!!!), we are much served in not being paranoid. We can't stumble at certain times when the urgency of love and devotion still has the most great precedence. Long live Christ the King! You all have my prayers. Closeness and devotion is what matters so. And also in realizing Easter grows nearer, I can see it coming more and more. Blessed are we in this life, this gift increases as does Christ! Jesus Christ is unmistakably the glory of God, He is the treasure!

    This is an interesting conversation but I am reminded of the apostle Pauls words in Philippians 4; 9. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me-practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
    This whole epistle was written with the theme of the saints spiritual joy in mind before existentialism, christian hedoism, affective theology, roman catholic mysticism and reformed confessions were in existance.
    I believe that joy is found ultimately at its source , The Living Word of God as known and experienced through the written Word of God as energized by the Spirit of God to the glory of God the Father
    What do others think?

    I have found Tozer very helpful and spiritually challenging, but writers like Kierkegaard and some of Edwards' material are being overly speculative and philosophical. I rather read some of the Puritan writers and their "experimental divinity" (experiential theology). I think that part of the problem that we run into in Reformed circles is that we take too academic approach to theology. Paul's prayer for the Ephesians was that "the eyes of your understanding being enlightened," they might know "the hope of His calling," "the riches of the glory of HIs inheritance" and "the exceeding greatness of His power" (Eph. 1:15-21).
    I also think that it is fascinating to see how God would often use people with little or no academic theological backgrounds to edify the church, including Bunyan, Spurgeon, Tozer, Pink and Lloyd-Jones, as well as Moody and Sunday.

    Coming from an Arminian background, Ive as a result of viewing Reformed vs Arminian debates am now reformed in theology though I'm now a member of the local Lutheran church since there's not a conservative Presbyterian or Reformed church within 50 miles, we're surrounded by semi Pelagian evangelical an Catholic churches, so better Lutheran than them.
    Is true that Lutheran confession of 1580 The book of Concord, departed from Luther's teachings, departing from the core of Luthers beliefs, his greatest work,The Bondage of Will, so that Lutherans avoid any talk of predestination and reprobation as these can cause despair if dwelt upon, especially during those times when you may experience doubt that you are truly one of the elect, and this is truly the problem of Reformed inbalance emphasis on testing your faith, to be sure it's not false faith...seeming to be attempting to separate the wheat from the tares, it's clear that Bible instructs that we aren't to,else we harm the wheat, appears many reformed pastors disregard this teaching, Im baffled as to why they do satans work, seeming to desire to produce doubt and anguish to the true believer ( a friend of mine is a reformed pastor who experiences this on occasion, he suffers from periods of depression) not the hypocrite who is unconcerned whether his faith is genuine. Luther when asked how do you know your saved, he repled, because I was baptised, not wondering whether he's truly of the elect, rather he looked to the cross, not to whether he's a reprobate he sought assurance from God's gifts, holy baptism and partaking of the true body and blood of Christ in the Lords supper.
    So, Im torn between the two, reformed and Lutheran, believe in double predestination and the sovereignty of God and the preservation of the saints, Lutheran doctrine affirms unconditional election while believing salvation can be lost, I strongly disagree with this, it's not a paradox of seeming contradictions but nonsensical even though there's scripture that seems to affirm...but contradicts so much scripture.
    I've as did Luther , myself and so many true Christians suffer from major depression, organic not due to a lack of faith,mine since my youngest memories ( 3 years of age) and never a reprieve, experiencing a taste of Hell though God's given me a deep underlying trust of him, saving me from suicide but at times my mind, satan gives me doubts, those reformed sermons by Piper and MacArthur, Are you sure you haven't false assurance,(why this destructive emphasis, those who are the elect dont need to be saved, Jesus promised to not lose us, neither will you preach them to salvation )lead to despair, sometimes suicide..I avoid like the plague...is clear neither have experienced major depression, Luther and Spurgeon did suffer periods of depression where there was only law and condemnation, Satan ruthlessly attacks our faith while suffering from depression, using scripture as satan did in the wilderness , this is often organic, not due to a lack of faith, else they would be as Spurgeon snd Luther who did suffer this, compassionate for the sufferer.
    So, my pastor and I agree that Lutherans and reformed are cousins in the faith and unrelated to the Arminians, I feel it's unfortunate we can't unite, meeting in the middle over our differences....but for now, am comforted by looking to the cross for assurance, not my inward feelings.
    True, many Lutherans merely go through the motions of coming to services, never attending Bible study , not giving of their first fruit, we've 7 of the 35 regular attending members who do attend Bible study and are devout and appear committed, we've 300 on the roles as members...many are undoubtedly tares but we aren't to judge their hearts, Jesus will, it's not our job, less we hurt the wheat. I'm sure most reformed Churches have the same issue with false converts.

    Anyone who has read a few Puritan sermons recognises the depth of spirituality that actually believing reformed theology leads to.
    I believe the problem today is we have a form of pseudo-“reformed” “Calvinism” that has risen hugely in popularity which focuses so much on “five points” of soteriology to such an extent that in many manifestations it almost divorces itself from teaching other areas of theology, practice and life.

    I am not Calvinistic but have read from Calvinist as well as Non-Calvinist. I love the works of Francis Schaeffer. Dr, Martyn Lloyd-Jones taught that the head (doctrine) and the heart (experiential) are connected. But often times its either all doctrine and no heart or all heart and no doctrine. Balance is the key. Right doctrine should lead to more love for others that is outward focused.
    The Pietism movement was a reaction to Scholasticism. Pietist is not bad in itself as we all should want to live godly and holy lives. But Pietism bad that basicly focuses inward that you do not care about the world or being involved in the world or cultural engagement.
    I am charismatic and believe the Spirit plays an important role that keeps you from becoming cold, dry and lifeless. You may have the right doctrine or theology in the head but it is the Spirit that gives Life. We should be able to learn from each other even if we got different secondary beliefs. My book shelf is loaded with people from all over the theological perspective. I take the view chew the meat spit out the bones.

    Because Reformed Theology emphasizes doctrine, it's been said by non-Calvinists that Reformed Theology stress doctrine over relationship. That can appear to be cold. However, that is not accurate. The bible is a book of doctrine. What is doctrine? It's a belief or set of beliefs. Doctrine teaches about the Lord and ones relationship with Him. That is and means relationship. People like that word relationship over doctrine because it sounds and feels more give and take and loving then doctrine does. However, if doctrine teaches about the Lord, that is loving because it teaches us what it is and means to know Christ.

      And even though I don't see eye to eye with Calvinists. Here we are, at a moment where it can be demonstrated, infighting, doctrinal dispute, consumes our time, our time in a life which in itself is to be spent, in marriage to Lord Jesus. Infighting is the bane of the most urgent evangelism, and devotion, and presence in real spiritual depth. Elaborating the doctrinal issues is a heck of a task we bite into (one that still of course must be engaged in.. of course!). And also given the internet consumes time, mine admittedly !!! God bless us, and keep us. We have still so much in common, so much to come together over, for the sake of celebrating!
