I've used the sunroof in my car a total of 2 times in 2.5 years. I don't like the road noise and I don't like the sun on my head/face. Best used on a warm evening when the sun isn't an issue.

Every car I’ve ever had came with a sunroof, lol I just tilt it, I rarely every fully open it because I don’t like the sun on my head and the air just goes right past the roof, it doesn’t let any in unless your idling.

Thank you for this video. The sunroof glass on my 2021 CR-V spontaneously shattered today, no impact whatsoever. Just BAM! while in rush hour traffic. Judging by the current class-action lawsuit against Honda for this fairly prevalent issue, I'll probably get a "not our problem" answer tomorrow at the dealership despite my car being in warranty. If I get declined, I think I'll offer to compromise by buying the glass myself if they give me the price I can get it for online, roughly $350, versus $509 retail. $350 sounds better to me than a $500 deductible and an insurance claim. Love the channel, BTW.

This same thing just happened to my daughters 2024 CR-V. She contacted the dealer and the first thing they said, probably hit by a rock not covered by warranty. I think all of these dealers are scripted to say the same thing to cover their asses on a defective (very thin) sunroof.

Listen to The Wizard! Had this happen on a 98 Avalon while driving down 95 at 50 Mph. Made loud explosive-like bang. Vehicle was only a couple of months old and after some back and forth the dealer agreed to replace under warranty. Unfortunately the dealer did not completely remove all the many-many small pieces of glass and the sunroof jammed. Dealer eventually had to replace the entire mechanism. Kept finding many tiny pieces of glass in various interior crevices for almost a year.

For me, a sunroof is more important than an AC system in my car! Although I loved the first sunroof that I had in my first car the most of them all, because it wasn't electric, it was an old MK2 Jetta '88 vintage, and it had a steel sunroof. During winter times, when it was dry but cold outside, the sunroof was frozen shut, so I cranked the handle for about half a turn - or however far it would crank until it was blocked by the frozen roof, got out of the car, gave the middle of the sunroof a fistbump and there I could open it no problem. I wouldn't dare trying that with these modern finnicky electric glass sunroofs though...

Great video! Get every single piece of shattered glass out. Other than the issues you identified with leaving any peices of glass, just one piece of it can get down in the drain tubes and will never come out. Then you have more issues with backed up water in the cabin. Everyone should check around the front drain holes and use a flashlight to look as far in as you can. I would recommend taking some water and pouring some into the drain channel after you clean out all glass and before installing new sun roof glass, just to make sure its draining properly. If not then, there could be a piece of glass down in the drain.

I probably opened the roof less then 15 times. Lol it’s just something I don’t think about. Same with the radio. It was over a year after having it that I even turned it on. I turned it on by accident because I hit the buttons on the steering wheel.

A good tip is to tape up the shattered or broken glass so it does not break more .There was a recall on Audi Q5 and a tech was removing it without being taped up and it shattered and pieces went all through the track, so headliner and complete assemble had to come out.

  • @StrangelyIronic
    @StrangelyIronic 4 года назад +1

Nice that you could get the oem glass assembly for a pretty good price considering it came with the mounting hardware and seal already and was from a dealership on top of that.
I got a Honda Element locally to flip that needed a few parts and they were pretty good about pricing and availability for them. Ended up doing the 6th gear mod along with tossing on a small turbo setup and keeping it for myself as a daily, the Manual AWD setup drives pretty good on the highway with good mileage with the 6th gear. Never was a Honda person but have had a pretty good experience working on the body, engine, and transmission of the Element.

If you own a car with a sunroof and live in a super hot climate, and you happen to have a vent visors on your car, leaving the window cracked a little bit will help let some of the heat escape from inside your car. I have a black on black 2003 Lincoln town car with a sunroof. On 105° day in South Carolina, I came out to find the sunroof glass had blown outwards… I’m guessing from Heat? It was parked well in my backyard away from the road but in direct sunlight. I took a roll of packing tape and weaved some tape all over the glass. Then I measured and cut a piece of cardboard to put on the inside. After removing the screws, I plucked the glass out. I love venting my
Moonroof in summer when first driving to let the hot air out for a few minutes since hot air rises.

I wish you could still get non-glass metal sunroofs. I had one on my 1988 gen-2 FC RX-7. It had all of the functionality of a glass sunroof, but you could pop it up for ventilation without letting in so much sunlight. It was great for southern summers. It fully retracted, too.

Thanks for posting this, very informative! I had a toyota with a sunroof alignment issue a ways back, no one wanted to touch it, 'recommending' someone else. Mechanics to auto electricians to panel beaters and even glass installers. Gave up in the end. Miss that car :o(

This happened to me driving down the highway and BANG raining glass. 2011 Mazda 6. A lot of the window blew out and was under the edge of trunk lid. Was really loud and didn't appear to be a rock.

I copped half a house brick that had thrown out from between the dual wheels of a lorry we were following, straight through the sunroof of my Merc ML, that's how they can get broken. New, dealer price $3000 just for the glass here in Australia, got one out of a wreck, $300, fitted it myself.

Had a Renault Laguna estate with a sunroof that had a mind of its own. Was suppose to be controlled by the dial mounted in the head liner but it was very hit a miss as to what you got when you gave it a command. Sometimes wouldn't even close when the dial was put in the close position, have to lock the car with the card and with the lock button pressed for it too close properly. One winter's morning with about 3 inches of snow on the roof, i got into the car to start it up and begin snow clearing. As soon as car started with the sunroof dial in the close position it went to fully open depositing all the snow onto the driver and passengers seat.
Note to all: never buy Renault cars especially early 2000s Lagunas they were riddled in electrical faults and a pain to diagnose especially with the stupid key card system they had.

Fortunately in SC, if you carry comprehensive coverage on a vehicle, all glass replacements are free. Still, it's good to know about the drains and the way to replace the sunroof if something like that were to happen to one of my cars should I not be carrying comprehensive coverage.

That sunroof is tempered glass, newer sunroof's and some door glass's ,are made from laminated glass, like your windshield, it cracks but won't shatter and fall apart.

Thanks Car Wizard. Great informative video with just the right amount of information, and no distracting music. My sunroof shattered while driving down the freeway. My deductible was $500, which I was ready to pay. I found an OEM replacement for $160 and had it swapped in 30 minutes. Now what do I do with the money I saved?

I have never had any problem with sunroofs. But, anyway, I am still waiting for a buy this, not that video on Subaru, because I saw a 2006 or 2007 Impreza wagon in the shop, as well as other buy this, not that videos on Mitsubishi, Mazda, Chrysler and Jeep. For example, a Mazda 3 is a great car to buy and a Chrysler 300 is not a good car to buy. These are my opinions about these vehicles, but I would go for a solid, reliable Jeep, over a Mitsubishi with a lot of bells and whistles, as well as numerous technology.

Sometimes glass can get just the tiniest nick in it and then the stress of repeated hot/cold cycles can cause it to break starting at that tiny nick. The stress all focuses on that one point, maybe it's so small it's even invisible, but that's where the break starts, and when it breaks, it's complete and sudden.

Many years ago, I worked for GM.
One job that I did was to install sunroofs. It took all of 55 seconds.
It’s much easier to assemble a vehicle than to repair it.

The few cars that I have owned with sunroofs have been fine. Frankly I think they are a waste of money, they’re expensive, add weight, raise the C of G plus add another component to break down. 👍😉

Thankfully that has never happened to me. However I do remember that when we purchased my father’s 2011 Honda Pilot Touring brand new from the dealership and we were testing out everything that we could not get the sunroof to close. Every time we pushed the button to close it the sunroof would move forward to close and then about 3/4 of the way shut it would automatically just retract backwards. Since then I’ve noticed it does that sometimes every once in a while. I think they said the issue is that there was too much lithium grease in the tracks.

I was driving with my Honda Civic and I saw a rock from oncoming traffic coming towards me. It missed my windshield but next thing I knew I heard a loud bang I was covered in glass.
For the next little while you can hear the glass break even more. I called around and the junkyard wanted $200 for the glass. It was the cheapest I found so I went in picked it up and replaced it myself same day
