I am NOT a musician, but this analysis was fascinating, to say the least. It gave me a deeper appreciation of the tune. At the same time, I was left with the impression that on this tune, "Yes or No", Wayne Shorter sounded very much like John Coltrane.
they were friends and practiced together. Also he hired coltranes band

Great tune! Last week, Jamie of "Get Your Sax Together" did a cool analysis of Wayne Shorter's solo.

Could be, but I have never heard of it.
That is a great question. He recorded with these guys plenty, and was in the same time and place and head space. I'd find it hard to believe they DIDN'T, but that is a great question . . .
The onliest beef I have with the recording is how low the bass is. Workman's contribution is equal to his bandmates' - apt, colorful rhythmic and linear commentary, statuesque tone, crying out to be transcribed . . . all but buried in the mix - "gelded," if I may. Would it have killed 'ol Rudy to tick the bass volume control up half a notch? Jeez, get a bank loan and redo the acoustics in that dump of a studio! Eventually the whole thing was remastered - what does that tell you? I guess anyone can be a recording engineer.
Anyway, terrific and much-appreciated analysis. It's a big favor to us bassists to learn what's going on, swirling above us on these landmark tunes/albums.
