What I love about this version is Clapton's vocals. He abandons the falsetto of the studio version and it adds so much longing to the song. You feel the alienation the character feels in this song, the envy. Clapton's delivery adds so much to the theme. Oh, and it doesn't hurt that Jack Bruce's bass sounds so huge that it can conquer the world.

Jack was actually a conservatory-trained cellist and singer. He also played piano (a requirement at Conservatories.) He was a child prodigy who won many prizes while still adolescent. He then moved into Jazz. He never saw himself as a rock or blues player and basically said that was Eric's job - he was Ornette Coleman out front. Little known fact, Jack transcribed all of Bach's cello lines for bass. (That's a lot.) He was really a musical man for all seasons. Check out 'Things We Like' for a surprisingly different Jack.

To my mind, those two tunes are the epitome of British '60s psychedelia (and they didn't get played to death on the radio). Cream were so ahead of their time it unbelievable... Ask most people when this was released and they will be at least 10 years too late. Cream were and still are a rock icon.

1:252:18 showcases the power and complimentary voices of Bruce and Clapton. The drumming before Clapton shredds it is perfection. Best Era of music never to be duplicated.
