  • What does the hack of the Playstation Portal really mean for consumers?
    The PS Portal has split opinions when it comes down to handheld gaming. Andy Nguyen (@theflow0) and his small team have hacked the Portal and installed PPSSPP, a very popular PSP emulator. They have managed to do this using software only and without the need for additional hardware. So, given that the Portal has been hacked, what should people do or expect?

    Sony won't even officially support a web browser on the PS5. It would be better to have them support it on Vita 2 as dedicated hardware.

      Everyone knows console web browsers have been a horror show in the past, they've been awful. But the Portal really warrants having one, just for the public WiFi.

    Great video man👍👍👍👍I agree this was just this guy trying to see if he could do it rather than it being anything that anyone could actually use for any kind of multi platform gaming. I would definitely use a ROG Ally or a Steam Deck for emulation over a Portal any day.

    You make a very valid point that it did not stop the hack from happening they might just believe that it's not worth them to add something that could be used as an exploit again to do so..
    I wouldn't be surprised if they looked at it as well we tried to give you guys free range with the PS3 but people took advantage of it so we've been more restrictive with each newer console since then..
    To be fair I mean they were promoting people being able to run Linux on the PS3 which had the ability to dual boot And people went wild with the exploits Sony got PTSD with and now they they got restrictions on everything hardcore lol

      Hey, thanks for your insightful comments. There is actually a hidden browser in the Portal too so it's not like it's not there, it just needs 'unlocking'. I can't even say I disagree with Sony saying that a browser just isn't needed on a console, it probably isn't, they are awful to use. But the Portal is a completely different thing and definitely warrants one.
      Users are left with the choice of either cloning their MAC ID's or if they're using an Android mobile device like the Pixel, then sharing the WiFi through that.

    I need it to run a browser and Moonlight/Xbox/Chiaki and maybe GeForce Now
    I don’t mind it being a streaming only device as the screen/controllers make up for it

    you don't need to "hack" the Steam Deck. It comes with a native desktop mode where you can load any side apps you want, no hacking needed.

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  5 месяцев назад +1

      You're right, it was a bad choice of word. I just really meant that we all know that ROM's are in that grey area and loading them onto a device like a steam deck isn't always a straightforward task.

  • @Nurf
    @Nurf 5 месяцев назад +2

    correction, you don't "hack" a steam deck. You can already do whatever you want with it. Install windows, any linux distro etc. and there's even a semi working way to hackintosh it. (Idk why you would do that, but some people are into self harming I guess)

    A lot of people forget that the PS3 launched with the ability to dual boot and run Linux. shortly after release it was removed. Does anybody wonder why? Lol
    To the average user who doesn't know this I can understand the frustration of not having a web browser but I have a 99% feeling that is never going to come to the PlayStation portal..
    But maybe I'll be wrong hopefully they do cuz it would be nice to just log into a hotel Wi-Fi connection without having to use your phone as a hotspot..
    With that being said everything that they've been through with people jailbreaking their past console and devices from PSP to PS3 to PS4 and now also PS5. At this point they're just trying to eliminate anything that could be used in as an exploit to hack their devices and make them lose money

    Hi mate - great content! Please can i have your opinion on games like FIFA/EA FC...all other games run smooth but games like this i have a very slight lag that does effect gameplay....is there anything i can do to make it run smoother for these games?

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  5 месяцев назад

      Hi there. I have to admit, it's been a while since I played a FIFA game. It's one of the only games that causes the red mist to descend. What kind of lag is it? Is it input lag or more like the stutter that people have been reporting? If it's the latter, that seems to be a refresh rate mismatch between the PS5 and the Portals screen. My ISP is meant to be sending me a copy of FC24 as a singing on bonus, so I'll have a blast on it when it comes.

    • @urbanfirewood5647
      @urbanfirewood5647 5 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the reply - -i wouldn't say its stuttering, more like at face pace movements there's a noticeable delay in input and responsiveness...its playable but not for elements like division rivals. On a separate subject will my upload speed be causing the issue? Ive ran several tests which show roughly what i should be getting but within the speed test on the PS5 im lucky to get 10mbs which is odd. @@TheGameFatherUK

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  5 месяцев назад

      If you're playing at home on WiFi and you're not experiencing the same issues directly on the PS5 with a dual sense controller then it's very unlikely to be an upload issue as your internet connection doesn't really matter when on your home network. Have you ran any network testing tools like WiFiMan on the Google Play Store? It'll give you some good data on signal interference, latency, throughput, stability and will let you see the channels other neighbouring networks (if there are any) are using so you can select a different one for your own.
      Also, it's funny you mention the upload test on the PS5 because I actually think it's restricted it in the first place. I just upgraded to a synchronous 1Gbps internet connection at home. When I do a WiFiMan speed test I get the full 1Gbps upload, but if I then test on the PS5 (which is hardwired) I only get 90.

    • @urbanfirewood5647
      @urbanfirewood5647 5 месяцев назад

      i haven't but i will tonight without fail, i just assumed that being hard wired on the PS5 would bypass interference and i split my wifi bands especially for the portal and have that only running with the 5ghz. I have the Virgin 3.0 hub and have considered upgrading to a new router but unsure if this will change anything. Dont get me wrong 99.99% of the games i play on the portal are great, the only thing i probably struggle with is getting the display to how i like....games like resident evil i struggle to get the brightness to my liking but im sure playing around with it more ill crack that minor issue. @@TheGameFatherUK

  • @willp1333
    @willp1333 5 месяцев назад

    Sony came out and literally said they don't see any reason for any new gen system to need a main web browser. Many people may not know this but in the past people have exploited the web browser of the PS3 to jailbreak it. They stopped updating the PS3s web browser when it was the system to play on then the PS4 never got a web browser update and was more restrictive and the PS5 has a hidden web browser we're up until the last 4 months You could go into chat type in Google and it would open up the web browser.
    You're no longer able to do that, if they would go out of their way to bring an update that blocks that ability does anybody really think they're going to add a web browser to the portal regardless of the fact that it can't log in to any Wi-Fi that needs authentication..
    Don't be surprised if the PS6 doesn't have a web browser at all..

      It's still really early days for the hack and not much detail has been released about it. Still, given the lack of storage and relative low processing power, I wouldn't expect much from locally run games. Perhaps PS1 era games at the max?

    Why can’t they just hack it where you can use the Bluetooth part to stream a video from your PlayStation five to the portal in your living room to give you like a second or third option to even like use the Seaport to use would be great if you guys can jailbreak that that would be great to be able to do those two options so you have three instead of just the one you know the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the C4to stream your game to get more reliable connection for us broke people that can’t afford the Internet
