I was so intimidated by the Hornet when I first got it, but your tutorials have helped me so much. Thank you!

The Kusnetzovs' smoke column is so big, that you don't need a radar to spot it.

I've use the ground radar and been able to spot large ships at sea- but you have to turn the gain to max.

The gain changes only the brightness of your screen, the radar can't see it better.

Because radio waves in radars have much longer wavelengths than visible light, you need huge aperture sizes to get comparable resolutions. There is a yet another technique that allows to "gather up" the aperture, measuring the returns along a certain trajectory of the radiating aircraft, called Aperture Synthesis (ever heard of SAR?), but it's only good for static targets and the SAR platform itself needs to have means of measuring its time and coordinates *very* precisely.
This is the kind of image you can get with a Synthetic Aperture Radar: www.lockheedmartin.com/content/dam/lockheed-martin/rms/photo/synthetic-aperture-radar/Synthetic-Aperture-Radar.jpg.pc-adaptive.full.medium.jpeg
Apparently, Doppler Beam Sharpening should provide significantly worse imagery.

I dont seem to be able to switch to r/bl mode. I've taken off, have the lightening pod and flir on and run up, the harpoon selected and armed, but cannot change from bol to r/bl for some reason. Might I be missing something?
EDIT: Realised I needed to have a target designated to then switch the missile mode.
