I feel like lawyers are just so pleasing and helpful before putting money in their hands I’ve had this experience twice already from 5 star lawyers good reviews and everything some do minimal work for allot of money it’s hard to know once you agree to invest thousands of dollars my son is incarcerated and we just hired another lawyer for a recent new case are we as his parents forced to pay the rest of money if the lawyer has not delivered on the smaller less serious charges ? Because we are the ones who are paying for the majority of the lawyers representation.
That is always a risk when someone enters the marketplace for lawyers. However, I've found that independent reviews and personal recommendations are the most reliable way to assess the lawyer's potential representation.

I picked my lawyer out of two, I choose him due to responsiveness and competence, my only doubt is the lawyer I didn't pick was confident in getting this 5 yr felony lowered to a few, the one I picked I liked his demeanor and ability to be there. I hope I made the right choice
I would value competence and responsiveness over confidence any day. The confidence you perceived may have been blustering to get your business. It may have been a show with false promises. During the initial consultation, the best attorneys never suggest what they believe they can get out of the case.
Also verify through your state if legally allowed to practice law through their certification usually on the wall of their office. There you'll find certification number to verify any* lawyer.

Everything from being coerced into pleading guilty, to ineffective assistance of counsel. This was a great video and great advice, but I think it misses the elephant in the room--public defenders. The large majority of defendants can't afford private attorneys and have to make due with the public defender system, which can be a STEEP drop in quality compared to a hired personal lawyer. How should a defendant in that situation develop trust in and a quality relationship with his appointed counsel?
That is a good question. Just like any relationship, the best way to develop it is by talking with the lawyer. Politely explain your expectations and be willing to give and take. These lawyers are very busy people. If the lawyer does not handle your reasonable expectations, then ask for a new lawyer.
I do not like how an attorney tells me it's going to cost $8k dollars and they want payment up front ,then they will look into the case after they receive payment,then during the conversation they hint about a plea deal ,which I do not want to do.

Im sorry I know that I might have asked you this before. But this is my partners situation. I paid the attorney the amount of representation. My husband was accused of striking a 2 year old child. In the police report it clearly says no evidence was tagged. We had requested for the attorney to gather the videos from the property to prove he didn't hit the child. However the office did not had cameras in the area where the incident occurred. My concern is how come if there is no evidence, the crime can't be dismissed?? The child was never taken to the emergency, and also as I mentioned before there is no evidence tagged. I feel like its unfear that he continues to be incarcerated in his situation. Can you please give me some advise. Also his court days keep getting postponed and the attorney is not communicating about why, nor has even taken the time to talk to my partner to discuss his defense... I’m sorry this case has been so difficult. But please realize there are many different forms of evidence. Physical evidence is just one. There is expert testimony. There is lay witness testimony. A person’s confession is evidence. Evidence can be direct or circumstantial. But without reviewing this case myself it’s impossible for me to express an opinion about the strengths or weaknesses of the case.

I had a question about paperwork that I thought I needed to respond to before the hearing date. And he was difficult over the phone - very dismissive. He sent another attorney from his firm to the hearing for me. It turned out well. But there’s almost no information about him on the Internet, no reviews.
Before the Internet, there were no reviews. People made choices about hiring professionals based on personal recommendations. Just because someone has no reviews does not mean they are not worth your consideration. Just pretend the Internet does not exist and solve this problem with that perspective. @@GustitisLaw the original incident was in September of 2017. The person served 3 weeks in the county then 6months at MDOC, got out on appeal 2 years later now back in with appeal denied. Defense was lack of jurisdiction and lack of evidence. Denied constitutional rights with all black jury. Judge proceeded anyway and let the jury decide. Don't know how to get rightful and positive results from this. Has not been right since the beginning as far as following the law in court. Some of the jurors were sleeping in court and still found guilty. who would the someone be if you don't mind me asking?

Of course. Yes, public defenders have larger case loads than attorneys who only taking paying clients. That's not to say a public defender is not a good choice. The best paid attorneys were all public defenders at one time or another. If you have the money to spend, then hire a defense attorney of your choice. The pros are you make the choice. I also understand your feelings about trusting a public defender. However, in my experience public defenders are well trained and well funded. Why don't you give this relationship more time to develop and maybe even discuss your feelings with them.

What can a defendant do after a judge has tried and ruled a 10yr sentence and appeal denied when it's a neighboring county 100% lack of jurisdiction?
Someone must challenge the jurisdiction by way of a writ of habeas corpus. How do you know the jurisdiction was wrong?

Most cannot in that situation. Court appointed attorneys are very often excellent at defending these types of cases.

Thank you for your question! The scope of the public defender's legal services is probably a matter of their office policy. Have you discussed this question with your attorney? I also understand your feelings about trusting a public defender. However, in my experience public defenders are well trained and well funded. Why don't you give this relationship more time to develop and maybe even discuss your feelings with them.

I was told that I should have hired an attorney to represent my son on this charge, but it was no way I could afford to. So my question is did I really need a hired attorney.
