London System against the Dutch Setup

- The London System can be answered with numerous different setups. One of them is the aggressive Dutch Defense setup with an early f5. In this video I will go over plans for white and black in such positions.

The Dutch Defense is characterized by black playing f5, and grabbing important kingside space before developing his pieces. This pawn provides an excellent outpost in the attack (on e4), and it allows the knight to come to f6 without blocking the f pawn. In the normal Dutch, black usually goes for a quick attack, and will accept different strategic or positional disadvantages in order to create attacking chances.
Against the London System, that is much easier to do. The London is much more solid, and the attack is not as quick, which makes Dutch players frustrated (I think), since they are used to using time and quality of pieces as soon as possible to destroy white. London versus Dutch setups creates much slower positions, though.
In this video I have gone over the theoretical positions and plans for both sides.

Another greatly appreciated addition to this wonderful series on the London System, now (sadly!) coming to a close; and an extra building block added to what can only be among the few very best chess educational resources available online. On his quest to becoming a GM, in his creation of this ambitious, formidable, all-encompassing, ground-breaking and unique channel, Stjepan already deserves even greater formal recognition for having done more for the game of chess, thanks to his vocation as an educator, than what is conferred by a GM title. His channel is and will increasingly be a true force for the enjoyment and promotion of principled chess among a wider public. He is conscientious and a perfectionist, yet combines these qualities with a candid, humble, warts-and-all style that comes of the fact his learning is his teaching, which is both ours and his learning. The fact he combines instructional videos with his own development gives him greater awareness of the difficulties of a learner than what I suspect many GMs may have. Stjepan, we are rooting for you, and looking forward to the day you gain that title.
This may be the kindest and most flattering comment I ever got. Thank you!
Hanging Pawns It’s nothing compared to your great work and effort!
@@HangingPawns I Second that Motion. You have taught me alot. thanks..
Same here, most of my chess knowledge comes from this channel.
Whole heartedly agree - Stjepan's content is fantastic. I am playing the London and the Caro Kann because of his videos - and learning a lot.
The opening series never disappoints, I'm excited to find out were it will take us next
none of his series dissapoint tbh
Just now only I watched the introduction video of the London system series....
And you saying this is finishing...
Thanks Stjepan🙏
No problem!
Yea what a legend doing the Dutch my favourite opening
Thanks:)
Thank you very much for doing this series on the London System. It is excellent and I really appreciate the lessons!
Man I can't help but laugh looking at the thumbnail of your recent London System videos😊
I cannot dislike this video, but I would say that GingerGM has a specific set-up against the Dutch, with which I have had decent success (or at least a fighting chance).
I have also had the pleasure of winning straight out of the opening with my favourite cheapo (Qh5 mate) when I sac the bishop against greedy, lower-rated opponents.
As a Dutch player I agree, I do fairly well against the Catalan or queen's gambit or the English opening setups however London or Jobava-London is difficult to deal with for me because they also plan a kingside attack. I am not sure why you didn't include the Stonewall Dutch in this, I think it has some solid structure against the London, we can even trade off the dark squared bishops. I personally don't like to fianchetto my light squared bishop even though it is good according to the pawn structure... I like keeping my bishop on c8 because it allows me to play an e5 to break the center open while the bishop is still supporting the f5 pawn this is very good if I have bishop pair. However, I think I will try experimenting with the Leningrad against the London, thank you for the tips...
The fact that you did all the leningrand setup from 2.Nf3 instead of 2.Bf4 really messed me up. You said that against Bf4 you shouldn't play g6 and rather delaying it until White plays Nf3. Problem is that if 1.d4 f5 2.Bf4 Nf6 3.e3 ... what's next? g6 must be delayed but what should I play? If I play 3...e6 then White Bc4 don't make sense, if I go d6 he would go Bb5+... either way different than the ramifications you saw in the video. As a dutch defence player I'm totally lost now. Could you please explain it to me?
Mabye play your other moves like for me d6 and nc6? Idk I was confused by this too.
Stjepan you officially my coach, I have followed your work for a while now.
For some reason I like this video more than earlier ones - they just seemed overwhelming.. In this one, I particularly liked the notes on the white bishop.
If I want to look for studys or opening theories i always come to your channel, watched the whole series, relly love your videos keep doing what you are doing
Hi Stjepan, A great series on the London opening. I'm watching your games on Lichess and rooting for you. Good luck.
Hi, can you make a video on London system against the Caro-Kann defense?
Please make a series on classical dutch ASAP. Thanks
Hvala Stjepane zbog tebe više ne znam koje otvaranje da počnem igrati redovno, zbog tvojih videa da mi ih je sve naučiti 😂
Haha. Nema problema.
I loved the video but I would have liked to see your analyses on some dutch variations against the London.
First the dutch stonewall (I have no idea if its good against the Londen but that's why I want to hear your opinion on it).
And most importantly you didn't cover the line that gingergm suggested against the London in his "killer dutch rebooted". There he likes to play his normal classical dutch but with a queenside fianchetto. But after that he plays his black bishop to d6. Gingergm says that this gives black a exciting attacking position for black.
Thanks for every opening theory video, all of them are so instructive and helpful, lobe your videos 🥰
Thanks!
If you have to play against Dutch player, an alternative plan would be to create some annoying surprise by Lisitsin gambit 1. Nf3 f5 2. e4 or Lisitsin gambit defered 1. Nf3 f5 2. d3, preparing e4 in next move, and you will not get annoying stonewall positions.
You are really incredible man. I am almost 23 and have recently started taking chess seriously. I dont take any classes yet and your channel is my main inspiration. I have learnt a lot by watching your videos. Also, I need a suggestion from you: I have decided to take up the Ruy Lopez, The London and The English as my opening repertoire for White. Is the 3 good enough to take me to a good rating(around 2000-2100)?
The ruy works if you’re okay playing into all of the e4 defenses that aren’t e5. Since there are so many, getting the ruy can be rare.
Excellent stuff Stjepan! Thank you so much for sharing! However, I don’t really get why h6 prevents the h5 attack by white??
2 videos on the same day? A surprise, but a welcome one
Gonna be that way for a while now. I have to force myself to train and work harder.
Thank you for a great series! I have a question: you say don't develop your bishop to d3 if they play g6. However, they could choose to play g6 at any point, for example, after you go for g4. No?
Hello sir Great content as always
Thanks mate:)
Can You make a video about opossite. As Black, Dutch against London System. I Play few times and event stringer players have some problems.
Maybe is here some Dutch players and give the best line to Play. I like the Leningrad system. Thank You
Hey bro I'm new to chess. I've been playing London and your videos are the best I've found so far about how to play against all the little nuances and possibilities. I face e6 a lot and I noticed stockfish will play e6 and then c5 and then Qb6. I haven't gone through the whole series because for example I am not seeing King's Indian at all at my level, but I'm wondering how to combat this. c3 doesn't seem to work, Nc3 I get into a weird position where I trade rooks but then am not sure what to play, and some normal development move like Nd2 does not seem to work. Qc1 also does not seem to work. Is there a video in this series that covers this attack on my rook? Anyway great videos, I subbed and yeah keep doing what you do it's really great.
Pls make videos on pseudo catalans and your opinion on McCutcheon French
Would you be able to link to or share the PGN for the game you referenced? I can't find it for the life of me.
Could you please make a video of Dutch stone wall 🧱
Can you make a series of videos on Queens Indian defense and Catalan opening
QID starts today. Catalan should start in September or Late August.
I am confused. Didn't Stjepan say he will no longer continue on his opening series? Are other opening videos going to come? :)
I said I won't schedule them. And I still won't. But I will record whenever I can. For now it should be almost daily theory.
@@HangingPawns Thank you very much! :)
Well... That's why I ceised playing the Dutch at some point. And other reasons.
Good decision probably
grr... london system bad!!
why?
pk11 unambitious
@@michaelvanzyl9418 Oh really? Lol ... What do you mean by "ambitious" then? You don't believe everything they say. Try it first. When I faced London system for the first time, some years ago, I got mated like a child. (I was black, logically.) It is a very "ambitious" system, for me at least. But thanks for your comment.
pk11 it’s probably gotten a bad reputation since a lot of beginners learn it because it’s not too sharp and you don’t have to pay attention to your opponent too much. That being said, Even if my opponent is not a beginner I feel more relaxed playing against it than other openings.
@@michaelvanzyl9418 Perhaps you should say "London system good!" instead, lol .. But I got your point and thank you for the explanation.
I want to know those who made dislike 😡😡😡.
It's a masterpiece 🌹
