The best thing you can do if you're writing rules is write a version of 40k that can be played in an hour.
That’s what I’m gunning for. Skirmish level 40k with no titans or superheavies. One model represents a squad of dudes or a vehicle. Working with Malifaux and Marvel: Crisis Protocol as inspirations for systems. Goal is to have games be set up and concluded in an hour or less depending on size.
@@Backstabmacro could look at Bolt Action too. Some suggestions:
1. Get rid of wounds. All infantry has 1 wound.
2. No rolling to wound. Attacker rolls a single attack dice - stronger weapons / more skilled troops represented by lower number required.
3. Defender rolls to save. No AP for weapons. Save is just flat based on armour.
4. Some weapons are "AT". Those weapons can't target infantry. When they shoot at a vehicle same rules for hitting apply. If they hit there's a roll to penetrate and a table of what it does. Say 2D6 on a 1-4 it fails to penetrate, 5-6 immobilised, 11-12 blows up. That sort of thing.
5. Alternating activations

@@MattyRlufcThe activations was my favourite part of trying Bolt Action. Anything except "one player spends 30 mins doing stuff while the other scratches his arse".
@@Daemonik it also means strategies develop dynamically and one side can't gain an unassailable position in a single turn. Much more ebb and flow with intense battles over objectives going back and forth

Iron Warriors are the best Legion...maybe not to the people around them, but certainly in terms of great lore! I am currently painting hazard striped cloaks on all my commanders.

I refuse to play with unpainted models in my army. I'm flexible if my opponent doesn't have a fully painted army I understand not everyone had the time / skill / desire to paint. But my rule is I won't field a model that isn't painted.

Hello Southern Prisoner, about 10 years ago a unemployed arts based graduate was looking for a job. I saw a listing on the career website for a design job in the HQ it said free gym access, did GW HQ have a on-site gym? recently I looked at the job benefits and there is no mention of gym benefits. Should be no issues with writing a rules system, I believe that rules can't be copywrited. As long as you are not explicitly including the setting into your rules document you're in the clear.

Calling something unofficial and non-profit making doesn't automatically mean you won't be sued. The idea that you can't be sued for non-profit making use of an IP is a myth.
They can tell you to stop, a company the size of GW will NOT sue you straight away for something this small free project. If they did it would fall down the minute you say 'alright I'll stop'.
I know several people who have had cease and desist with GW, it never goes further as long as play ball - it IS their IP, but they also seem to make it a policy to not chase you if you are upfront that its non profit and unofficial.
@@northernexile Great, but that's not the same as can't/won't happen, which is what you implied in the video. It's not as simple as a lot of creators make it out to be, which is potentially harmful if someone takes what is being said as read.
Rules cannot be copyright make sure you dont use treadmark names you can sell copy and distribute

just make a system nuetral game. use whatever you want, its your story. no need to pander to GW and you can make money if it is entirely yours. like a lot of RPG games are system neutral, or in this case model nuetral
Yeah exactly. You buy the models and can do as you like. There are no legal ramifications so long as you aren't infringing on IP. It's the IP that they own, not your physical models or the brain/rules you use to play with them.
