Per Rupert, if the armies are "fair," why don't you two switch armies for a game? Show him how "fair" it really is.

Rupert's friend seems like a textbook example of a toxic "nice guy". The red flags, if you'll forgive the cliché of that, were there right from the beginning of the story.
    1. Becoming less helpful as soon as they lost for the first time
    2. Stacking lists and blatantly so
    3. Gaslighting and lying about said stacking of odds
    4. Being visibly upset at Rupert changing his roster in secret and upsetting their game-plan.
    5. Becoming a total ruleslawyer as soon as they're not winning by a landslide.
    6. Being seething mad over losing because it bruises their ego.
It's pretty obvious to me they only play Rupert to get a cheap ego boost from newbie-stomping.

This reminds me of when I got into 40K in second edition. I played tyranids and a friend played blood angels and always brought a vindicare and a unit of grey knights. I didn’t quite understand what I could do with my army at that point and lost every damn game against him.
Long story short, he moved away and we lost touch, then come to find out 20 years later we both move to within 25 miles from each other in Texas and still have pickup games to this day.

Most people who think painting models of an evening is a "waste of time" likely spend 90% of their evening sat doom scrolling complete rubbish on their phones.

Networking is so fake and disgusting.

Started gaming in 80's. Over the years I've had female and gay players in my table. Focus was in narrative and story. This is how it used to be.
Sexual preferences or someone offended was not in the works. I guess my generation was born with helmets on..

Nothing says more "waste of time" than watching a match ... Regardless of who you watch it with. Or going out all the time with your "friends"...
I had one colleague that called us nerds for talking about League of Legends and Mass Effect all the time and we should instead focus on cars, women and sports (mind you, we were in a gaming company). I told him "Mate, I have a gf and we shagging every day, I don't care about cars beyond their utility, and if I can't or won't practice a sport, I have no desire of watching others do it." He was left speechless. Later on I heard him bragging that he spent 1k$ on a DotA 2 Compendium a few weeks before...

I believe "Rupert" is an officer in the army since the name is used to refer to commissioned officers. Also the military has LOADS of "closeted" nerds, as an army reservist myself I've lost track of the amount of soldiers (both regs and reserves) I've met that are into warhammer.

the 2nd story reminded me of my short adventure into magic the gathering. it started out with a couple dudes i got to know, old cards, some new, nothing too serious. after a while our group expanded and the new people were more competitive minded. we went along with it for some time.
in the end it spiraled into having to spend hundreds of euros per deck, if you wanted to win some times while having some variety in gameplay. constantly chasing the new meta
i dont mind if thats anyones jam, but its not mine. only solution was to find new people to play with or talk clearly about our ambitions and decide from there if it'd be an enjoyable gaming experience for both.

Truth be told, I think you should be allowed to play whoever you want. You could say the same thing about being a knight, or a blacksmith, or a soldier,or a priest, or any other sort of lived experience. Why does it matter when it's someone's race, or sexuality? If you don't want to do that sort of thing yourself, sure, I get it. If something makes someone at your table uncomfortable and they ask you to stop, that is a different story however. Among friends, who cares what you do?

We can agree to disagree about trans people but just never be a dick to someone. If you genuinely have a problem with someone then don’t play with them.

27:00 ah a true son of Dorn, Anvil detachment along with a tonne of heavy keyword units. Sounds like he has sternguard and lieutenants with those mortals and lethals.
Ngl, I would love to do this as well although I would totally give my opponent a handicap, maybe an extra 500-1k of points depending on the army.

Rupert, along with several other guys that have been mentioned in similar situations, needs to learn how to tell 'Dave' to fuck off. Either play the guy and be able to call his bullshit or walk away! Being a friend doesn't mean having to be a WH40K opponent nor taking advantage of you because of the friendship.
Also, why buy more models to prove a point? Just tell Dave to allow you to pick out what models of his you want and both play his faction against one another.

I'm trans and in my TTRPG groups I bring none of that stuff into them, I would be pissed if another player wants a running dead naming joke in the game as I would not want one of my real life issues dragged into my escape from it.

One thing I have learned from these Hobby Nightmares, is that if a play group has a trans or a girl in it, stay away. Perhaps this is not the lesson I am supposed to take from this, but it seems to be true.
