- The Hyundai Santa Cruz is a truck (even if Hyundai would prefer that we don't call it that) We've already compared this vehicle to a truck (see link below) but it's also a fantastic SUV alternative. Is it right for you? This video may help you decide!

2000+ miles into my new limited Santa Cruz and I have to say, THIS THING IS AWESOME! I spent about 20 hours in research before purchasing mine in Somersworth, NH and its still more car/truck/SUV than I had expected. It’s a very luxurious sports car with tons of power... has the interior space and convenience of an SUV... as well as a super functional truck bed for most of your home, yard, work and play/hobbie/activity needs and tasks. Hyundai nailed it on this one. Everywhere I go this thing is snapping heads around. Great overall value. I highly recommend checking this thing out if your even moderately interested or even curious... you won’t be disappointed.
Great job! Without an on-road test drive, this was the most informative video I've watched on the Santa Cruz so far. We test drove one and were blown away at just about everything it has to offer. In fact, I decided to trade in my Tacoma and order an Ultimate because I realized THIS is what I wanted the Tacoma to be, a true lifestyle vehicle. Anyone looking for a truck becasue they think they need a "real truck" should really think about test driving one of these.
Yeah, this isn't going to work for everyone, but people need to get in it, try it out, learn about everything that it has to offer, and they may just be like you and me and discover that this is everything they've been looking for and more!
That’s my favorite color on the Santa Cruz! Love the way that one is optioned with the sunroof and roof rails. I’m definitely getting it!
Yeah, I love this vehicle!
I Love your reviews! Mine tows my 18ft Camper with tip out no problem. I put dual exhaust on mine and it looks awesome. A little more Sound too. I highly recommend the new K&N filter. It doesn't need a kool box just the filter. Gets rid of the turbo lag Completely!
You did such a great job walking the viewer through. I absolutely LOVE this vehicle and appreciate the information. I do wish we had the same features as Canada :/ I've also subscribed. :)
Thanks for watching!
Great video. Can't get enough Santa Cruz info. I have 5 more weeks to wait for my ultimate and the wait is killing me. I agree with your assessment on the volume button. My Kona has a volume knob but I've been using the steering wheel volume so By the time my Santa Cruz comes in it will be second nature.
I use the steering wheel volume switch almost exclusively on my Kia Soul EV, EXCEPT for when I want to do a quick mute... I'm going to have to learn to PRESS that steering wheel button. I can't see why this is a big deal to people, and if you want to turn it up in a hurry, hold the steering wheel switch up. My message to people is to stop letting auto reviewers tell you how your car should be equipped. I used to review cars, and it was a lot of work to get into a new car and ACTUALLY learn it in a week, and then communicate the vehicle to others. I get it, for them it's not ideal, for those of us who don't have a new vehicle every week, it's just a non-issue. Thanks for watching! I do appreciate it. (sorry for my lengthy rant!!)
Thanks for your very detailed and well-explained. Upgraded from Audi Q7 Progressive to Santa Cruz Ultimate, the more you drive the more you love it. Few points; hope Hyundai will provide in future models.
1. Engine stop and go.
2. Memory Seats, at least Driver.
3. Folding Side view mirrors.
4. Factory Tow package.
I wonder if the Stop and Go function was left off as a way to lessen the chip requirement in the vehicle. I've heard that other manufacturers have temporarily removed that feature to avoid the chip, or chips involved with that. Memory seats is definitely something I'd like to see. The power folding mirrors has been something that we're seeing less and less of form Hyundai and Kia, and the factory tow package, I agree! Although I'll be talking more about that later.
We have used the little trunk a lot . Awesome tailgating and Surf fishing and our Camping trips.
Luv this vehicle Peter, but then again I'm a Hyundai Tucson Ultimate owner (US-spec)! I could see my self in one of these fantastic SAV's. But I really like my 2019 Tucson so maybe down the road a bit I'll get one. Luv the info. you provide Peter, outstanding in all respects, Thanks!
Thanks for your kind words!
Why thule roof rack? Are they better than the factory ones? What are the differences? Thanks! Love your reviews! I have one too and always looking for accessory options.
I have the flaps but they are body formed really nice!
Got my Ultimate today!! LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE it!! Although I did find my first dislike: can't lift the windshield wipers, because they're tucked a bit under the hood. I always lift them when cleaning the windshield at the gas station. That's going to annoy me something fierce over time. But everything else makes up for it. Already finding little things that I didn't know about - like how the backs of the front door handles light up at night when the prox key gets within range. Walked up to it tonight in the dark and that surprised me. Looks cool, and no issues finding the door handle in the dark!
I do wish the displays got a lot dimmer at night though. Even down at 1 I find them a little bright, which was something I was worried about with the all-digital display. The notch pattern in the LED headlights will take some getting used to as well. It does align perfectly with oncoming traffic though, so I get the reason. Wife agrees that it's a bit distracting - especially when turning. Looks like a shadow of a critter running in the ditch. (Yes, I'm trying very hard to nitpick.)
Any word on Hyundai Digital Key in Canada?? I thought it was available on the Santa Cruz, but I can't find any reference to it in-vehicle or in Bluelink. I was looking forward to being able to use my phone as my key!!
Still have a couple of weeks to wait for my accessories (trailer hitch, roof cross bars, floor liners, 7-pin wiring harness, etc) but that's okay. I knew they were all scarce right now.
The semi-autonomous driving is SCARY good - and I love that you can pop on the 360 degree cameras any time. The seat warmers get crazy hot, the heated wheel is really toasty, and I just might become a sunroof convert. It was about 18 degrees today and made for a lovely couple of hours on the highway coming home with the roof open.
This little ute is amazing. In the 2.5 days mine was on the dealer lot, they had 4 people come in wanting to buy it. I think availability is the #1 thing holding back sales right now. There is definitely interest!
That's for aerodynamics and fuel economy
There’s usually some trick to get the wipers to park half way up. But it varies by car company, check your owners manual.
@@solidaverage that's what I figure too. Still haven't found it though.
I have a video on how to lift the wipers. I'll link it tomorrow. (not supposed to work on Sunday, but I wanted to see what you thought of yours!) Search how to raise your wipers on our channel.
@@BrantfordKia ah. I'll go try that later. It's a little convoluted, but at least there's something there. Kind of a down, down, up, up, left, left, right, right hack. LOL
As for the Santa Cruz. Oh man, it is SO good. I do wish the instrument cluster got dimmer at night, I'm still on the fence about the notch in the headlight pattern for incoming traffic because it is visually quite distracting behind the wheel, and I wish it didn't ding a reminder every couple of minutes when you're sitting engine off in accessory mode. Took it to the drive-in last night to see Free Guy and that did get a touch irritating after a while. (But super adjective movie!) Also, the 360 cameras are fantastic in tight drive thrus! :)
Again I have a 6x10 utility trailer that does absolutely everything extra and I highly recommend it. I use that utility trailer for everything with out messing up my bed. It tows no place!
Excellent review. I just got an SEL Premium., USA market. It's a great vehicle: comfortable, powerful, good gas mileage, and great spaces for storage. This car may draw many SUV buyers, especially Subaru buyers.
Thanks for sharing!
You can but leds for the blinkers at the auto parts store.
One Year and first State Inspection lol here in Chester Va. 17 k so far on our Stone Blue SEL Premium turbo! To me the SEL PREMIUM WITH ACTIVITY PACKAGE IS THE BEST VALUE! WITH OUT THE CRAZY CRAP. WE HAVE BEEN ON THE BEACH TO THE MOUNTAINS WITH OUR TRUCK
Great call out on TFL. Plus they only used comfort mode. I know previously Hyundai advise car reviewers to use Smart mode in US in that kind of terrain.
It's funny. I used to REALLY enjoy those guys and I still think they do a very good job, but they also often do a poor job, and they don't know the cars as well as I would like them to. At the end of the day, if you're going to be doing the types of off-roading that they do in Colorado, you should get a Jeep or something similar. This isn't designed for that, but at the same token, don't rely on them exclusively for product knowledge, or capabilities. They're an opinion channel, and sometimes they're opinions are misinformed, or they just haven't spent the time learning about these vehicles. They aren't the experts that many people believe, and I'd happily do a video with them where we could discuss what I know to be true, and what they believe to be true. I still think they're worth watching, but viewers need to be aware that they shouldn't be your sole source of information.
@@BrantfordKia I agree with yer sentiments about TFLcar 100% Peter!
@@BrantfordKia I find them hit or miss, depending how much they do/don't like a vehicle. Sometimes they're just really out there.
I have been watching more and more of the Truck King channel. I think they've been doing a really decent job of mixing opinions with real world use, like the pontoon tow test with the Santa Cruz. I enjoy the father-son dynamic and differences in opinions between the generations. Younger and older people view things through different lenses. Overall, I find them fairly well balanced though.
It's tough some days to cut through what's real and what's one reviewer's opinion though.
@@GREATNESS275 At least TFL is not biased like this Hyundai salesman.
If people aren't sure what to classic it as.. just say it's a great vehicle that should generalize it.. it's excellent for urban duties picking up a fridge or dryer at home depot vs trying to fit those in an SUV
You and I agree on this... Whether it's an SUV, or a Pickup, or a van, I call it a car. To me, a truck is a MASSIVE vehicle used to deliver things. I don't care what it's classified as, and I think that mixes things up for people more than it should. If you're looking at SUV's and you want the flexibility of an open bed, you owe yourself a test drive. If you're looking for a pick-up and want a more SUV like driving experience and tech, you owe yourself a test drive. If you're stuck in the past and unwilling to consider a new take on what a vehicle could be, this probably isn't for you.
Just bought a 23 ultimate and I’m surprised it doesn’t have parking sensors so approaching an object is a bit scary. I am unclear how the system help with parking?
I really like this.
Me too… a lot!!
Interesting vehicle
The jack should be integrated into the bed somewhere to maximize storage under rear seat. If I buy a Santa Cruz next year I will try that. Waiting for late 2022 to see if they improve some small things like the wireless apple car play based on feedback from owners. They should have stayed with the 8” screen all trims and a few buttons with a volume knob (Most Hyundais have a nice mix of buttons and touch). The California design is a little bit too narrow a focus, how about FL, gulf coast, HI? It should sell well in those areas. And why the limited truck colors if it’s not a truck? A dark red, blue, or silver like the 2015 concept would look awesome. Lastly put some carbon fiber accents for under $100 over most of the piano black. Looks great, won’t scratch.
look at a bit larger consumer age group.
I haven't tried, but I assume that the jack will fit in the under floor trunk area, but I agree, it would have been nice to find another spot for that. It is easy to though, and there are other spots to put it if you wanted to move it. I don't agree with you on the 8" screen, because the 10.25" screen is not only larger (which is nice) but it also allows for several upgrades to the software which gives you a lot more features. And the "Designed in California" badge is there because it was literally designed in Hyundai's California design studio. They don't have an office in Florda or Hawaii. I did an interview with Brad Arnold who designed the vehicle. He lives in California and works at that design studio. You can watch that interview here. ruclips.net/video/HKD5mE_9jB0/видео.html Lastly, I know a lot of auto reviewers don't like the fact that there isn't a physical knob for the volume, but as an owner, it's something that you adapt to within a matter of days. It doesn't bother me, but I get that it bothers other people.
Love those Hyundai products 😍!
Me too! Especially this one!!
Are uhboat and about the same?
I have a question a bit unrelated to this, but when do you think the new 2022 Kia Forte 5 will be out for the Canadian market ? I've seen some videos from the Korean/overseas version of it and the refresh is just stunning.
I've been following this car, but I still don't have a date for it. See my video on the Kia K3 (because I think it will be called the K3 when it arrives) and you'll find out all about the specs that will be available in Canada. As soon as I know more, I'll make a video.
@@BrantfordKia Awesome thanks ! Hopefully they release it as a 2022 model and not a 2023 model like the Sportage refresh for North America. It would also make sense if they call it the K3, because the Optima got renamed to k5
US website indicates the two interior color options for the top trim are black and …wait for it… DARK GRAY . No green mentioned.
In Canada we get a Green or Black. I went with black on mine. The Green is very close to grey, but you can tell it’s green in the daylight. I quite like it.
That's a cool vehicle.
Yeah, I love this thing!
Very good. I heard somewhere that the Santa Cruz has sway control for towing. Is this correct?
Yes. My understanding is that the traction control can sense that, and it will counteract the sway to the best of its ability. Keep in mind, you should still load your trailer correctly and do your best to minimize sway.
Maybe sway but no brake controller. That can be very dangerous.
I want one!
They're awesome! That's why I bought one!
Are those factory mud flaps because mine don’t look like that and they might be Canada or aftermarket?
If I remember correctly, I think there are TWO types of mud flaps, traditional ones that are a little smaller, and these ones.
How will this do with snow on tonneau overnights, outside ?
No problem at all. The top can hold 220 lbs of weight. I haven’t stood on it, but you’ll find other RUclips reviews of men standing on the cover. Long story short, it won’t be an issue.
Does this come with a tow Hitch, or hitch has to be bought sepratelly?
You will need to add the accessory hitch. This can be included as part of the sale so that it's on the vehicle when you pick it up.
Would it be possible to go over the process of purchasing a vehicle from Canada and bringing it into the United States?
We can't sell new vehicles to the U.S. it's against the franchise agreement for Canadian dealers.
@@BrantfordKia Thanks for the response!
@@BrantfordKia ... CONTACT YOUR GOVERNMENT.
I'm in Northern Maine... pretty sure you Canadians wouldn't like it if America dealerships refused to do business with Canadians.
Something is not right with that line of thinking. I'm feeling alienated and a bit pissed off about it already. Just might cancel my summer vacations in PEI, NOVA SCOTIA, AND NEW BRUNSWICK.
Been trying to find this limited in the ACTUAL limited colors... you know, the green interior on green exterior. You can't even order it. I give up. It's obviously not in the cards for me.
Not only that. I'm extremely disappointed that the American limited version SUCKS compare the the Canadian. Thats just F-=king BS.
Time to move to Canada? :)
We don't us our Back seat very little it's for the Grand kids from time to time.
Hello my name is angel I’m in Florida I want to bye one I got a Santa Fe unlimited and I want to trade 2021 white
Are bully bars available!? I have a 14 ft. Canoe
If you mean cross bars, yes.
@@BrantfordKia Not "roof racks". The front grill protective bar.
@@michaelbradley2695 oh. Gotcha. I don't think so.
I wish to buy one. I am in Japan and where can I buy one ?
You live in Japan? It would be a great time to move to Canada or the U.S.! That's the only place to buy one today.
@@BrantfordKia not interested to relocate. japan is just fine
Really want one, but cars are expensive
Yeah, modern cars aren't inexpensive, but this is a fair value when you look at features for the dollar compared to other vehicles out there.
Not at 40k. Yeouch!
I heard the gas milage sucks on this thing?
Yes, might as well get a mid size at this price.
That hasn't been my experience so far. It's significantly better than my Chevrolet Colorado was.
@@BrantfordKia Please stop with handling everyone's objections. You are a biased Hyundai salesman. Let people have their opinion.
does it have a garage door opener?
The Ultimate version (shown here) does. The lower trims do not have that.
@@BrantfordKia Can you tell me the brand and model # of the hood deflector?
The SEL Premium has the Valum nobs I prefer it .But we have learned to enjoy the touch screen. You have to give it a chance! This Vehicle is not for Snow Flakes! They will not enjoy it.
*** - the mud flab look very cheep - please take it off / because i am buying this vehicle and i do not like to change my mind ,,,,,,, ka
There are two different mudflap styles available from Hyundai. These are the larger style, there is also a more traditional style.
@@BrantfordKia please show me the more traditional style ,,,, thanks / ka
@@KA-cc9yw I don't have pictures of them, but you may be able to find them if you contact your local dealer.
I am really pissed off about getting a tow package to pull my travel trailer! No one has any thing yet . Come on Hyundai! This a no brainers give us a complete package with a 7 pin and brake control system. Please! Please. Mine is useless with out it.
Can you not get it installed aftermarket through your dealer? I'm just asking. I honestly don't know.
At 40k he should not have to aftermarket something as basic as wanting to be able to properly tow with a vehicle that brags it has 5k tow ability.
$44,000 For a gas powered car? need I say more?
It's competitively priced with other SUV's in the lineup. Feature for feature, it's actually a good deal compared to other pickup trucks, or SUV's.
Salesman.
They (Hyundai) should've named it the Hyundai Trunk if it's not a truck. 😂🤣🤣🤣
In that case, it's a really nice trunk!
Talk too much
It's a gift. :) Stay tuned as we've introduced two new hosts who may appeal to you more than I do.
