- This is a classic debate show featuring Frank Zappa and Candy Stroud.
Part 1 of 4.
There are 4 parts of this debate NOT 3 parts, video ran longer than anticipated.
Frank Zappa: father of four and a Mother of Invention
"Frogwash, I say!" - love Zappa
"And your opponent who you will be debating against is Frank Zappa! Good luck with that!"
I love how in her opening statement, Kandy puts masturbation on the same level of depravity as violent rape. Clearly we are dealing with a superior mind here, folks.
0:59- right out of the gate!!! LOL!!
Frank, we miss you so much!
The phrase "Frogwash, I say!" is officially and eternally in my lexicon.
i replayed Zappa's intro over and over, and it gets me everytime.
Porno rock? So, is that like rock music with elements of porn groove music? Because that sounds like an awesome idea for a genre.
To be honest, that describes a handful of tracks from Overnite Sensation (a great album) really well, lol
Rock a groove, Babu
Parents pushing their responsibilities off on the govt.
"Teach your children well."
Frank's first lines were genius. I love you Frank.
Everyone's in favor of censorship. Some want to censor porn, others want to censor criticism of the government, and others want to censor anything that touches a nerve.
If parents are concerned about what their children are listening too then either educate them about issues of concern, teach them responsibility and allow them the opportunity to learn or go listen through their record collection, do not allow them a mobile/smart phone, instruct them not to listen to anything without you present, etc but take responsibility instead of promoting or propagating censorship which is only laying the first section of a road built of good intentions that leads to hell.
Loved Franks' interduction.✌️
Weird she would use the music of the 50s and 60s to show how wholesome it "used to be." In the 50s and 60s, parents hated that stuff too. In the 60s, the complaints were that the music was filled with sex and references to drugs. And she used the Stones are a comparison?! Sympathy for the Devil, for Christ's sake. Brown Sugar in the early 70s. Gimme Shelter talks about war, rape and murder.
The Beatles wrote songs about drugs such as Got To Get You Into My Life. Day Tripper's lyric, "She's a big teaser," was a play on, "She's a prick teaser." In that song, they sing about the girl playing one-night stands only. Paul McCartney wrote a song called Why Don't We Do It In The Road? for crying out loud.
Frightwolf she was comparing lyrics, not defining them
"Frogwash, I say!"
Zappa was the best.
This is funny in looking back at it. I'm not a big fan of many of the bands and artists who put out vile crap and don't listen to it myself, but at the same time, I think if people want to listen to it, then so be it. But putting labels on recordings never did anything. And with MP3s now it matters even less. I'm a big fan of Frank and even he on occasion has pushed the envelope. But rock lyrics is the least of our concerns. For example, the corruption in govt. and business is 100 Xs worse.
Oh My Lord! THIS is a CLASSIC video from my college years. I remember me and ALL of my fellow musician/composers just being GLUED to the whole PMRC thing. I think we ALL knew that li'l ol' Tipper Gore and her band of blue-haired harpies would ultimately win out (for the time being, anyway), but it was SO much fun to watch Frank, Dee and (believe it or not!) John Denver stand up and cry "bullshit" to the morons on Capital Hill. PLEASE, Mister Zappa, reincarnate and become our supreme leader! I will HAPPILY volunteer as a baker in your Utility Muffin Research Kitchen. All Hail Frank!
Zappa's facial expressions from 0:51- 0:58 are absolute GOLD.
3:44
"my parents like.. don't don't.. like.. they don't like me listening to the music but I.. I'm.. I..explained to them that its like just normal music.."
I remember hearing some main stream interviewer from the 50's where somebody asked elvis if he could take the boogie woogie out of rock so it doesn't make kids want to wiggle. Funny how history repeats itself. A few months ago they talked about twerking for about a month straight.
OH FUCK THAT'S JUST EPIC
Clearly this woman is not capable of raising children if she requires government intervention.
I once bought a Grateful Dead album and was very shocked to later find out that those gentlemen not only abused drugs but also squirrels.
Frank's opening remark pretty much summarized this entire debate: "Censorship is bad for you, and sex is good for you." Yup... very true. Case closed.
Damn, we need Frank back!
4-6 hours of rock music a day was bad? Wow, could you imagine if they had seen what kids are watching on the internet today? LOL.
I love how Frank opened up by making the whole thing seem like a joke, because it is. We never hear about people censoring classic art pieces that blatantly show genitalia... Why's that? Because it's "classic"?
"I have 3 children and I believe they should be protected (not by me), by reform of the music industry.".....funny as hell.
The second Zappa started talking I knew this would be good
"HOGWASH I SAY!"
Frogwash
Candy, of course I'll introduce you to Warren!
Don't make a fuss, just get on the bus.
Hey, I'll buy you a pizza
You'll love it, it's a way of life.
youandwhosearmy? The boys in the crew have got a present for you!
youandwhosearmy? Take a little ride on the mixer's face.
Zappa never cared if anyone ever listened to his music, he believed in the 1st Amendment which is the only reason he even got into this whole issue.
I love how Frank parodies the whole situation because how ridiculous it is. Go Frank.
When i was seven i listened W.A.S.P and wanted to drink blood out of a skull but i never did.
Hahah, Frank was just pure cool. Gave himself up entirely to his genius, and as for anyone strong enough to live their lives authentically, he just looked cool as hell. Guess none of them ever read "Self-reliance" by Emerson, could teach them a thing or two.
His intro even reminded me of George Carlin, my idol, don't you guys think? One of these genuine mavericks who just knew too much to really give a flying fuck about what conformist brainwashed hacks would think.
RIP Prince
Watching this 32 years later to the day. What a world we live in.
Dan Lawson ikr
That opening line from Zappa was hilarious..Wow, this is dated. Seems so innocent compared to the shit thats going on today. I wish an asteroid would just wipe us all out and end the stupidity.
As much as I miss Frank's insight, in a way I'm glad he's not around to see what kind of bullshit we're up against NOW.
If my kids imitated Frank Zappa I would be very proud
"Sex is healthy, but it is not an animal act."
Uhh......
Kandy Strout knows every pornographic song better than anyone else lol
Frank Zappa was a visionary, he owned everyone he ever debated with, in the most intelligent ways. Kandy Stroud and the PMRC were just uptight conservatives (with their views on this at least).
+JPMcFly1985Two who the hell was kathy stroud.....sounds like a stripper or playboy playmate name.
You're right, it even sounds like a porn star or stripper name lol. Made her an even bigger hypocrite for being so uptight about sex.
+JPMcFly1985Two Kandy Stroud runs an international PR firm and is a consultant for Democrat presidential campaigns. Far from being a conservative, she is quite liberal. Google her name, her politics are quite clear. She is no conservative.
my point is, she TOOK the conservative view on this issue, compared to Zappa and most other musicians. And I betcha a million bucks she supports Hillary, so she's not a true progressive. #BernieOrBust
JPMcFly1985Two #FeelTheBern He was an asshole..he kept hitting on me when he was in New Orleans..it was pathetic he was 35 and married ...he did not mention his wife...he said he was "between ladies"..WHAT ?!
I was a 22year old desk clerk at the Fairmont...everyone was laughing at him..
I finally had enough and told him what I really thought of him...perhaps I could have been more tactful...
BUT HE WASSSSSS AN ASSHOLE..PERIOD..
HE WAS STUPID WEIRD...NOT BRILLIANT WEIRD LIKE Lenny Bruce or Groucho Marx or
Jack Kerouac
Candy!.....oh, yeah, I remember you! You were stuck to seat 35 on Fido 3!
Yes folks, Candy is the kind of all-American girl who will do anything....yes, anything for like, 50 bucks.
I think it was spelled phydeoux 3
She thought Rob Halford was singing about a woman.
Grant Boughamer Zappa should have told her it was about a man doing a man....love to see her expression then!
Grant Boughamer nobody wanna eat his ugly ass
i also think that it's hilarious that the PTA is asking that records be VOLUNTARILY labeled.
"it's a porno hearing session, and the kids are hearing everything."
Frank..........your spirit lives on!
I have a copy of Joe Satriani's "Engines of Creation" with a "Parental Advisory Explicict Content" on the front of it. It's an instrumental album! There is a cut on it called 'Borg Sex' which is a guitar instrumental!
i ONLY bought the albums with the warning label ... epic backfire
What a task Frank chose when he got involved in this. He's a great speaker, but the people on the other side were so stupid. Not much has changed, stupidity has probably increased.
stupidity has been commercialized, eh.
We've come a long way baby
"Hogwash, I say! Censorship is bad for you, and sex is good for you!"
"Frogwash, I say!"
Tipper knew better than to debate Frank, so she had candy Stroud do it. She was such a coward
4-6 hours of rock music a day? thats equal to a school day of rock.
Nicely put!!!
I thought Sugar Walls was about that funky wallpaper from Charlie and the chocolate factory. o.O
it's funny when she quotes Good Golly Miss Molly you sure know how to ball! and she's in favor of that song.
Sex is healthy but its not an animal act.
It's the literal definition of an animal act.
LMFAO. why won't folks understand that??
Frank pointed out at the time that it was all simply about distracting people from a tax they were imposing on blank cassette tapes.
I love how she brought up Little Richard. Have you seen Tutti Fruttie's original lyrics? Sheesh...
GO FRANK!!
I wonder if Al demanded his Zapp and Prince records back in the divorce settlement? And since when was Sheena Easton Rock?
I think I'm going to sample Candy Stroud speaking these lyrics and compose a song ... fun stuff.
Love this!!! God I miss Frank!
Hahahaha Smokey's little qoute is ridiculous.
Got a 40 dollar bill Kandi likes poodles
that radio show director looks like ralph machio the karate kid
"I did not feel that was appropriate for my then ten year old child to have purchased" - Unless she lets her ten year old child walk to the record store and buy albums with her money, Tipper is buying the album for her ten year old child. Therefore it is her fault, and her responsibility to ensure it does not happen again.
Did you see that radio station manager from NYC?
Wow!
He was a baby... couldn't have been older than 23... at the highest.
Looked like Ralph Macchio.
The program director of the radio station I worked at in the 80's was in his late mid-forties.
I can't imagine a radio station manager looking like someone I could have gone to high school with.
But DAMNED! Wasn't Frank all 80's!!
"In" hair, "in" clothes... very 80's.
Wow.
"You have a problem with sex."
They all do, Frank.
Fear of fun.
I was waiting for her to say something along the lines of, "I have three children, and all of them are proud American pornographic actors."
I Eff-Blank-Blank-Kay ...
Like a beast.
Zappa was a genius. You'd think they'd have found someone to debate him who was at least competent at arguing.
-jcr
Notice the title isn't "Candy Stroud on Nightmatch." Shows you who's more effective.
Frank... always the intellectual, always the gentleman.. fucking epic.
Censorship is no good, but she correctly anticipated a certain development. Sex sells, and the industries use sex a lot, with only very few restrictions left, and their targets getting younger and younger. Miley Cyrus is just the current peak, or the tip of the iceberg.
I do not think this can be stopped by legal means. I do not understand how she view masturbation and sex at gun point as being related. I just understand her general concerns.
Taken in historical context.
Frank called it.
Today, we have states banning books.
( no difference between banning and burning. )
If that's not censorship by way of state propaganda, what is?
If there exist such a huge influence of words, where te hell are all the nice people listening to lovesongs? There should be millions of them...
Tipper Gore, mother of four, now divorcing Al!? Her morality raises an eyebrow.
I have one problem with the resolution and that is one question
Who says rock is for children?
If you think the 50s didn’t have suggestive lyrics, you’re wrong. Listen to Hank Ballard for one.
i love frank and I dont believe in censorship. But many people are influenced by lyrics, violence, and pornography. Its only ovbious. The debate then becomes what to do with the conundrum.
Intresting that it´s rhe samw story today with videogames...(allmost the) same argiuments and ewerything.
3:44 is that Walt Jr.!?
It couldn't possibly be him because he wasn't having breakfast.
BetitoBass lmfao. This is a great comment.
If you like it listen to it, if you don't then don't.
Its not rocket appliances.
amazing how much harder core lyrics have gotten over the years ..... no innuendo , straight up down and dirty. . .
I think everyone can decide for themselves. Most music is like a movie or the news, i'm not going to do what someone on the TV does just because i saw them do it.
Did Candy Stroud ever get sued for copyright infringement?
I heard it more like this: "I have three children, and I want the government to fascistically promote my religious POV (1st amendment broken), and stop musicians to express their opinions freely (1st amendment again).
No Candy, let's have them watch crooked preachers 24 hours a day...
the funny thing is that pop lyrics and espacially pop music videos nowadays a more profane than ever, in spite or even more so because of the labeling
Where was Prince in all this, the only musicians that went to DC were Zappa, John Denver and Dee Snider. I still remember buying the Judas Priest album back then Defenders of the faith. Lol. Eat me alive. 🤣
In the 90s it was rap and Marilyn Manson...in the 00s and beyond it's Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, One Direction, Rihanna, Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus...this time they're RIGHT. ;__;
zappa's a master debater
@darkknight91 Oh really? Perhaps you were BORN in 1991, but Wal-mart has censored "dirty" artists by refusing to carry them, an act made possible by the Tipper stickers. The government claims those stickers and the movie ratings just provided information, but then "family values" douchebags from both sides of the political spectrum called for de facto censorship when vendors and theaters excluded certain artists. Just don't act like a teabagger and claim we're a "free country" okay?
Zappa was the man!
+Orlando Walker Indeed, and what planet, was this lame fool lady living on?
+Orlando Walker i agree but to be fair Stroud was a light weight, no a feather weight, no virtually weightless. she was almost hilarious here and becomes much more fascinating to listen to .. so insipid so shallow
Oh how times have changed... Now the world is purple in homage paid to prince...
Love this 👍
0:58 priceless
Hahaha. Did she just lump masturbation under the same umbrella as "incest" and "violent rape"?
If she did, she's a forerunner of this joke of a movement we have today called #MeToo!
3:43 son from breaking bad
The torture never stops...
