One of my greatest heroes, personally, and a man for whom I sincerely mourned, even though I had never met him, never got to thank him in person for all the things he did.
I've never heard a news story where any of Frank's kids were arrested for drugs, DUI's, or any other indiscrections..very rare for the entertainment industry..I saw him in Ohio in 76 or 77 and his show was one of the best I ever saw....Frank was a great father.... he certainly taught Dweezil to play guitar to the utmost.....his daughters are great people and mothers.....
Zappa had real courage. He was angry for all the right reasons. He was so American. I am so glad he stood out and spoke out. He was a champion of rational thinking.
@Jeff RoTull: I agree. This is one of the better interviews I've seen from either Frank or Larry. Plus, I remember reading somewhere that Larry thought Frank was one of the most interesting people he'd ever interviewed. They're both legends.
I love Frank's music, but even more so,I love the fact that he was never afraid to speak his mind.He was a true individual, and has always had my attention and respect, since the first time I heard him play.Just as beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, strange is in the eyes of the bewildered.
Hearing Zappa express his views on censorship et al always makes for interesting hearing. Crossfire, to many, is the shining beacon in this respect (and rightfully so) but he clearly felt violated/defensive during that interview. I think he fares even better when, like here, he's being given the opportunity to detail and elaborate on his stance without the constant interruptions of overly confrontational co-guests/hosts. I like the calmness of his demeanor here and how he puts his views across.
Nice one, ilikezappa! It's almost too much to bear when framed in such a way......I'll go you one better: Frank Zappa is dead, and Dick Cheney still lives.....nor has he been in jeopardy of (rightfully) going to prison for any reason, at any time, since 1971.
powerful interview, applaud Zappa & Larry King. They get a lot said in a short time. 1st amendment. Long my our freedom ring. Fear not, your children are thinking with the universal power of good in the mix. Love & education, not hate and censorship is the answer.
If Larry didn't have a clue he'd be arguing all over the shop, trying to contradict FZ and talking over him like so many of FZ's political antagonists. Larry is coaxing the answers out of FZ that he knows FZ wants to make. In other words, a good interview. Thanks for posting!
Not only was Mr. Zappa a genius as a musician, he was a brilliant man in all ways, everything he said here was very true. It was a long time ago when he said this, and things are not much better now. I myself am a Christian, but I still agree with him.
both here on larry king and on the tonight show with johnny carson they say "we dont have enough time, but we sure would like to have you again here to talk more about ...." it's almost like the powers that be say "you can have him on your show but at the end of ot and only give him a limited amount of time, you can say you want him back, but we dont want him back in reality"
Frank really showed these guys about how to protect children. From what Ive seen of Ahmet, Dweezil, and Moon Unit, they seem to be the most clear-headed children of celebrities in America.
yeah ok, and thats good. and frank has a point.. if you had a fourteen year old, in the eighties, would you be ok, with them doing heavy drugs like heroin, and totaly into heavy metal, going to all the concerts, doing heavy drugs? i mean if its al ok, if it s all good...that might be what the parents were get at then. i remember all this, and i was a rock musician then, and i still am...i m not saying the parents were right to do that, but it came out of concern, at the time...so being concerned about your children in that manner is wrong i gues
@darkalleyheroes YES, you are very correct, my friend. ALL FOUR of his children are smart, well educated, socially graceful, polite. I had the pleasure of interviewing Dweezil when I was 17 years old. It was the first interview I ever did on the radio and he saw that I was nervous. He was so nice and accommodating and considerate to my lack of experience and expertise. He put me at ease. I've since had the pleasure meeting Moon and Ahmet. They are also the nicest people in the world.
A fine orator, brilliant thinker, ultra-brilliant muscian and composer, and one of several people I admire from the 20th century. His advice is timeless - and to this day I have not eaten any yellow snow! Passion and genius -great combination! Damn prostate cancer!! Took Frank from us WAY too soon! Hey bros,...get checked,....find yourself a cute female doctor with real thin fingers,... lol!
That awkward moment when Zappa says that he doesn't want his kids to watch programs that has a number at the bottom of the screen to a host of a program that has a number at the bottom of the screen (though only for a couple seconds). lol
@LightninBoyHopkins He wasn't a leftist, he was a practical conservative. As he says in The Real Frank Zappa Book "I would like to see a smaller government and lower taxes. What, you too?"
Just stumbled on this interview. WOW! And now there's "Rap" music. Need I say more? Talk about promoting drugs, alcohol, sex - Rap does all that and more! Zappa would love to know that the Gore's have split up with accusations of adultery in the news. Jim Baker bit the dust, again due to drugs and adultery. Again the old saying, don't throw rocks if you live in a glass house! Frank Zappa was right on!
@dangerics I did and I still don't see how I'm taking it out of context. I mean it's not a very long comment - the two statements are in the same paragraph, separated by two other very short and insignificant sentences that don't add to the context. So explain the context that I'm apparently missing in which they do not thoroughly contradict each other. Is there some way he can say vile things about someone, yet still speak respectfully about that person? Are we just talking semantics here?
@dangerics "He's said some vile things about a lot of people, not just musicians." " He always speaks...respectfully to and about people with whom he disagrees." Of which of these two statements would like to claim ownership? Because I'm not lettin' ya have both of 'em.
I would love to be able call that number and speak to Mr. Zappa. Although, after saying: "Um...ahh...I love your work." he would probably say: "Good for you." and hang up.
As a self-professed constitutional fundamentalist, I wonder what his opinion on the 2nd amendment (keep and bear arms) was. I don't recall seeing an interview with him expressing any such views either way, but it would have been interesting, since I don't believe he would have supported the sale of military-grade weapons and ammunition.
@breastsfortea "...we are living in the least violent time in recorded human history..." Not that I'm inclined to disagree, but may ask what arithmetical formula is used to come to such a conclusion? What do we define as a "time?" The past 50 years? The past century? And what do we define as violence? Number of casualties as a result of war? Number of dead, injured or disabled as a result of criminal assault? As I said, I'm not being disagreeable - just asking.
the truly free think for themselves- and that takes the insight to see when you are allowing someone else to think for you. I am a fan of FZ, this is one of the reasons. He stood up the best he could to political distractions and called it out the way it was. To all the haters on here--- the basic thrust of the pmrc bit was to call your attention to this issue so that a couple of sneaky non related tax laws could be put into effect, and it worked. Frank brought this up many times--
This man was a genius! His message is even more on point today than it was all those years back. If only we had listened…
One of my greatest heroes, personally, and a man for whom I sincerely mourned, even though I had never met him, never got to thank him in person for all the things he did.
"Being interviewed is one of the most abnormal things that you can do to somebody else. It's two steps removed from the Inquisition" Frank Zappa
I like how Frank Zappa explained this all in a non-offensive way. Very intelligent.
Thnx for posting. This kind of stuff should be shown in schools.
Oh Frank, i miss you so much...Thks for everything
Amazing, we need his voice today!
R.I.P Larry
That I can agree with.
Amen Frank!
Awomen
Zappa had real courage. He was angry for all the right reasons. He was so American. I am so glad he stood out and spoke out. He was a champion of rational thinking.

We need Frank and people like him now more than ever!
I miss Frank's common sense views.
frank zappa for president
Zappa was sooo far ahead of his time he saw it coming 25 years ago...
Frank Zappa , way way way ahead of his time ! R.I.P
+Claude Hachey i wouldn't say he was ahead of his time, just the majority of people have fallen behind :D
He wasn't a Christian

Interesting how they used to use such intimate camera shots. Zooms into closeups. Makes what they are saying very compelling. Cool.
It's obvious that King has a great deal of respect for Zappa - love to see it.
"Business in the temple"...good description...
i born on this date!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Always was 20 yrs ahead of his time!
Love it faved... this must have taken up some drive space from VHS .
God, I forgot that Larry King once knew how to conduct an interview,
Is Zeus you're personal God belief
Miss you Frank.
..still using your wisdom in the dystopian 🌎 of dj RUMP'$ VIRUS 2020
That, plus they are called Ahmet, Dweezil and Moon Unit, which is pretty awesome in itself.
Frank Zappa is dead . Michael Bolton lives . There is no fucking justice. RIP FZ
Nice one, ilikezappa! It's almost too much to bear when framed in such a way......I'll go you one better: Frank Zappa is dead, and Dick Cheney still lives.....nor has he been in jeopardy of (rightfully) going to prison for any reason, at any time, since 1971.

Awesome, thank you!
If only today's outspoken musicians actually made great music like this man... one can only wish right.
Zappa is one of our biggest influences, he is a MASTER!!!
Not only was Mr. Zappa a genius as a musician, he was a brilliant man in all ways, everything he said here was very true. It was a long time ago when he said this, and things are not much better now. I myself am a Christian, but I still agree with him.
i like listening to frank's arguments...R.I.P frank. very entertaining.
"Father of future stars- Frank Zappa!"
Truer words, never spoken.
The best ever lived?
One of my heroes.
Simson Samuelsson, Vänersborg, Sweden
"If you see a man in a brown suit smiling too much, that's very dangerous"
Man, I wish I could think and speak on my toes the way Frank did. It's just that my thinker ain't as sharp as his was. Not even close.
both here on larry king and on the tonight show with johnny carson
they say "we dont have enough time, but we sure would like to have you again here to talk more about ...."
it's almost like the powers that be say "you can have him on your show but at the end of ot and only give him a limited amount of time, you can say you want him back, but we dont want him back in reality"
Frank Zappa, you are my hero.
man i wish i could have called and talked to him!!
"If you see a man in a brown suit smiling too much, that's always dangerous."
Zappa was singularly brilliant and unique.
Frank really showed these guys about how to protect children. From what Ive seen of Ahmet, Dweezil, and Moon Unit, they seem to be the most clear-headed children of celebrities in America.
yeah ok, and thats good. and frank has a point.. if you had a fourteen year old, in the eighties, would you be ok, with them doing heavy drugs like heroin, and totaly into heavy metal, going to all the concerts, doing heavy drugs? i mean if its al ok, if it s all good...that might be what the parents were get at then. i remember all this, and i was a rock musician then, and i still am...i m not saying the parents were right to do that, but it came out of concern, at the time...so being concerned about your children in that manner is wrong i gues

i love his music
Scary Smart! Long Live Frank Zappa!!!
A fine orator, brilliant thinker, ultra-brilliant muscian and composer, and one of several people I admire from the 20th century. Damn Zappa! He is good...
Man...zappa must have got sick of these interviews about censorship
I like Frank's warning label :)
@axeofgod72 Yeah, the Senate based their decision solely upon the awe-inspiring testimony of Frank "My fans bow to me" Zappa.
Surprisingly Larry King does a pretty good interview.
Frank was a fucking genius. Never be another like him.
Bravo!
wow, larry king seems to understand, maybe he was able to explain it to some others at cnn.
Folks in power don't need to blow themselves up. They already have the power.
That awkward moment when Zappa says that he doesn't want his kids to watch programs that has a number at the bottom of the screen to a host of a program that has a number at the bottom of the screen (though only for a couple seconds). lol
Because LLCool, this was in 1985. I want you to go dig up photos or videos of you 24 years ago and see if you had your "loook" together.
Rest easy Larry.
@LightninBoyHopkins He wasn't a leftist, he was a practical conservative. As he says in The Real Frank Zappa Book "I would like to see a smaller government and lower taxes. What, you too?"
I see from this, that his voice is what it was always about haha
I think he looks nicer now
Back when Larry was handsome. Frank, true artist.
Genius!
that comment made my day.
Holy cow have T.V. interviews changed.
I was thinking the same thing.
Ok 🐑
Zappa was very well spoken.
@Guitarstring187 there? try anywhere
Larry still looked like a hybrid Gollum back in the day.
We've heard of people spinning in their graves but Frank Zappa must be rotating like a fucking drill given the current situation in the world.
Frank looks MAD.
Frank warned us
I love watching Frank stare at his toupee
Frank was and always will be 100% correct. Man I miss that guy....
Zappa for president? Yes we can!
Just stumbled on this interview. WOW! And now there's "Rap" music. Need I say more? Talk about promoting drugs, alcohol, sex - Rap does all that and more! "FATHER of FUTURE STARS!"
Holy shit, Larry king was old as fuck back in the 80s!!
He's like the uncle I never had.
@dangerics I did and I still don't see how I'm taking it out of context. I mean it's not a very long comment - the two statements are in the same paragraph, separated by two other very short and insignificant sentences that don't add to the context.

Frank talks a hell of a lot of sense
I never realized that Larry King wore a rug
Frank was way ahead of his time way ahead RIP peace my frend CRY CRY wipe ok so i cry,
@dangerics
"He's said some vile things about a lot of people, not just musicians."
" He always speaks...respectfully to and about people with whom he disagrees."
Of which of these two statements would like to claim ownership? Because I'm not lettin' ya have both of 'em.
Frank could see the future..
Damn, I never knew Larry was ever that young. And talk about the odd couple. Ha!
I would love to be able call that number and speak to Mr. Zappa.
Although, after saying: "Um...ahh...I love your work." he would probably say: "Good for you." and hang up.
To be fair, that's what he did when he called Edgard Varese.
@NerfedToDeath--missing the point completely. Listen to this vid again and then again, again and maybe you'll get the bigger points being made.
How right his predictions for hte USA were.....
As a self-professed constitutional fundamentalist, I wonder what his opinion on the 2nd amendment (keep and bear arms) was. I don't recall seeing an interview with him expressing any such views either way, but it would have been interesting, since I don't believe he would have supported the sale of military-grade weapons and ammunition.
great... ;-)))
@Guitarstring187 So does Frank, no?
@mrmeanero Guess I should have read on through the debate...my comment now appears stale and redundant.
HOLY SHIT!!!
That's Larry King in the 80's???
Holy shit stinks to
@britneystakes how on earth is that a relevent statement?
I think Kirkslastbid name is Bobby Brown
wow this man is genius
@breastsfortea
