Yeah bro, it totally looks rotten. It looks really good the way you did it and the secondary stain treatment you did gave it some contrast so that it wasn't all just an orange color. Also, I really like how you went around and torched the edges, especially the bottom of the pumpkin. It makes it look like its even more decayed. Great inspiration!

Wheres the bend? Is there enuff of the shaft that you can cut the bend out and just use the burr with shorter shaft, closer to the rotory tool.
