  • ATC doesn't always get it right and I guess when it rains, it pours. There is a lot of learning In this video. We fly once again with newly minted private pilot, Paul, on a San Francisco bay tour as gets familiar with the 101 transition northbound.

    Just gave this a try, super fun and pretty easy. BTW, the transition by 101 is called Pacifico now.

    Man, that had me anxious. I would’ve done a 360 to buy me some more time before getting that close.

      Jason knew they were cleared by the last announcement but wanted a legal confirmation of the clearance.

      Same here. I was getting antsy seeing him that close to the Bravo border. Like you, I thought about a left 360...

    Great video! Enjoyed watching it and being reminded of our flight around the Bay, unfortunately without the 101 transition.

    Loved this one as much as Steve's version as they both bring back memories of doing it in a much simpler time back in the '80s. As you know, I shall return... and this makes a great refresher.

      I remember back in the day being able to fly over the world series to take photos. Everything was better pre 9/11.

    Great vid. I fly around the Bay a lot and always love to learn how to stay out of trouble. Did a Bay Tour seminar at San Carlos, which was very very helpful as most of the transitions are not published, official transitions. You really need to plan carefully to stay out of trouble. Tjhe VFR coridor between PAO and SQL is one to know well 😉

    Great video, I flying this transition, I've also been given very late bravo clearances when departing out of San Carlos

    Well...all I can say is TOP NOTCH FILMING!!!! It doesn’t get any better than this. Spielberg would have trouble topping this training video.

    Ahhhh! I did my check ride in N6198N. I truly believe doing my private pilot training out of San Carlos made me a much better Pilot having to deal with all of that busy air space. It’s hard not to get your communications down when departing from and entering back into controlled airspace from the beginning of your flight training. Dan runs a tight ship down there. Love your videos!

      Thanks Jnani! It's always fun to see old N numbers ... I sometimes come across the airplane I did my CFII in when I fly over to KOAK, brings back a lot of memories. I'm glad you got to see N6198N immortalized by the RUclipss :)

      The Finer Points- very cool! Kevin was my CFI at SCFC. Now 31 hours into my IFR training out of Petaluma municipal. got to get up to one of your mountain training sessions some time. Looks like really valuable training living so close to the Sierra Nevada range. Laterz

      Jnani Matson awesome! Kevin is an outstanding instructor. Yes! Please join us sometime - the staff we get for that trip is first class and there is a lot of learning when we are all together. We’d love to have you onboard.

    OH! I didn't know about the 280 transition via Norcal - when SFO is not accepting bravo transitions I usually fly out over Half Moon Bay instead... stunning views of the coast. That is good to know! I've got a great video on my channel, a flight from Half Moon Bay over the Golden Gate, Alcatraz, etc. It's a montage style video on an absolutely beautiful day. Can link you if you'd like. Cheers!

      Thanks! It may not be up until the morning ... I completely underestimated how long it would take to export and it's still coming out of FCP. I am not used to 9GB movies! It's a fun raw video though and will be up there by morning. Thanks for your support.

      I tried this morning and (holy cow) ... the upload to RUclips was going to take over an hour. Had to run out to an AOPA lecture course I'm teaching this weekend. I promise this will get up to Patreon when I get home this evening. Thanks for your patience!

    • @TheFinerPoints
      @TheFinerPoints  5 лет назад +2

      Not sure he's here on RUclips, but I'll ask him and get back to you. Most of my students come in between 70 and 130. Paul had started training many years ago in Seattle and then took a long break, went through a few CFI's, and then met me so I'm not exactly sure with him.

    Great video. Could you get a VFR bravo clearance on the ground at St Carlos for that route before take off ?

    • @TheFinerPoints
      @TheFinerPoints  6 лет назад +1

      No, the class D controllers cannot issue it. That sure would make it easier!

  • @ukpylot

    Cool video, always a thrill to hear Cleared into Class Bravo. I heard that the recent redrawing of Class Bravo at SFO has made the bay tour a lot more difficult to get - is that true?

    • @TheFinerPoints
      @TheFinerPoints  5 лет назад +1

      Paul Sanders I haven’t had any trouble so far. I got cleared through the Bravo today ... so I have to say no

      I work the SFO finals. The majority of GA bravo transitions stay clear of our airspace but we get a bit. The bravo redesign hasn’t effected the frequency that well give a bravo clearance or not in our airspace.

    If you're doing formation flying, is there such thing as a group clearance? Meaning.. the lead airplane does all the communication for the formation.

    • @andrewbrown4062
      @andrewbrown4062 5 лет назад

      Yes. In the Pilot/Controller Glossary, look up “Formation Flight”.

    Is it an option do this transition from north to south? I'm hoping to do this in May.

    • @TheFinerPoints
      @TheFinerPoints  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, just start with Norcal (probably on 135.1 or 120.9) and tell them you'd like a 101 transition southbound. They will tell you to stay "south and west" of the bayshore freeway (or highway 101 ... same thing) then hand you to SFO tower. It's possible they won't approve this low level transition but you can still go wide / high along 280.

    Is this a “Published” route? As I can’t seem to find it anywhere.....

    • @TheFinerPoints
      @TheFinerPoints  6 лет назад

      not exactly. more like "local knowledge". You might find it on the VFR FLY chart on the back of the terminal area chart for San Francisco but I'd have to double check

    • @Parr4theCourse

      @@TheFinerPoints Oddly enough, this is why flying the LAX Class B can be easier than SFO. There are at least 4 transitions through LAX and all are published. No guess work. Gotta love flying the Bay Area though. Great video, thanks!

    I notice you take pictures occasionally while flying with students (either the avionics or outside the window). Do you use this for debriefing or just for pleasure?

    • @TheFinerPoints
      @TheFinerPoints  6 лет назад

      Ricky DeMann a little of both. I use them A LOT to debrief instrument pilots and in this case I was documenting the visual landmarks for Paul. I knew we were capturing the track log so these pictures can be used to say ... “here we were as we approached SFO on the ground track and these are some landmarks you may have missed.” Although, Paul is a part of these productions to some extent and some of these shots were taken in the event I needed them to make this video.

    • @TheFinerPoints
      @TheFinerPoints  6 лет назад

      Ricky DeMann the app i use to teach instrument students how to visualize is Skitch. The photos you see me take get called up in Skitch in the debrief and then you can draw on them.

    Some of those controllers need to speak more slowly. Speed talking breeds errors.
