Interesting theory. Numemon can digivolve by climbing into a stuffed bear, so I won't be quick to dismiss. Turning yourself into a mindless zombie actually sounds worse than reincarnating. Assuming there's some conscious choice involved; are these digimon afraid of losing their memories and arguably themselves, or do they not want to lose the power they've gained throughout their life?
It might've been just a bit, but you could easily separate undead digimon into "incorporeal" and "corporeal". As for SkullBaluchimon and Baluchimon looking so different, I'm sure the designers simply forgot what the former looks like, considering the two were released 17 years apart.
No i was looking forward to dukepumpkinmon. But now i want to see a real Skullmon they are call skull but are Skeleton so now i want to see just a greymon skull chasing kids maybe eye lazers. Skelgreymon sounds abit silly but would make some sense.

Oh come on. You call yourself a digitologist? The answer to if these Digimon are the "dearly departed" is a big fat NO. Remember, Digimon aren't like creatures of the real world. These Digimon species exist because they absorb data. Creatures like Bakemon look they way they do in the same way that the phones on the beach are actual phones. They're just manifestations of the data that the Digimon had absorbed. Same goes for "gender" in Digimon. You can have a male Angewoman because the physiological traits only exists due to the data. Remember, Digimon also don't have "moms and dads" for pretty much the same reason. Now, the creature OF the Dark Area exist there because 1, they like being there 2, Plutomon and Anubismon keep them there. The more of the "dark" data they absorb, the stronger they in turn become AS Dark Digimon. Now, mind you, I think the biggest examples we have are Wizardmon in the real world actually BEING a ghost, due to his (and many other Digimon's data) not being able to move on, even to the Dark Area for processing. AND even the so called "Immortal Undead" Digimon we see in the Cross Wars seasons who only really exist due to a power preventing their data from crossing to the dark area and reviving them almost instantaneously. The "glitch" that you're referring to is the risk that all Digimon take whenever they're Deleted. Every season teases the possibility that they will not have their past memories after being reborn. Of course, protags are going to protag. But if it makes a "new digicore" then that would just lead to a "new Digimon" in the same way that absorbing data happens anyway.... That or would result in Digimon like Apolcylomon and Chimeramon.
