  • Welcome to the third video in my Dodge Dakota frame repair series. In this video, I cut out the rusty sections and weld in patches to fix the front frame section. This includes fitting the crossmember and leaf spring perches and making sure everything fits. If you haven't seen them, check out parts 1 and 2, too. This was a ton of work. I hope you enjoy!

Perhaps part 4 will answer this question. How do you know where to drill the holes in the frame so they line up?
It amazes me what a little time and patience can accomplish, even if we all have bad days along the way. I often work shorter periods for the critical stuff so I don't get burned out, or rush through, critical steps.
    The truck looks amazing!

Thanks, CTSCAPER! I don't think I probably do a good job of explaining it in part 3 or part 4, but, I kept two of the original mounting holes for the crossmember and two for the leaf spring perch. That gives me locating holes for those two parts. I could then bolt the crossmember and spring perches in place with both frame halves and know exactly where to drill the other holes. If I hadn't been able to use some of the existing mounting holes, I'd probably have relied on measurements.

@@RobertAdairWorkshop That makes a lot of sense! I like the existing holes better than measurements as a first option but understand measurements are sometimes the only option. I had considered some kind of template in sheet metal with locating holes, anything to make sure those holes are spot on! I'm enjoying the series, once you finish the truck it will be as good as new and a heck of a lot easier to maintain than some of the newer stuff.

Thank you for the video, I have a few questions… Did you use flux core wire? And what was the thickness of the plate steel you used?

H, Ken. I did use flux-core. It's 0.035 Lincoln branded. The steel plate is 3/16" thick. I tapered it out to match the actual thickness of the frame where the patch and frame meet. 1/8" steel would have worked better, I think.

I'm a diy'er myself and really impressed with the job you done, I must say excellent! I have the same truck but v8 4x4 and 5 speed, looking to do some chassis restoring in the near future and these videos are sure going to be a great help, just wondering what the overall cost was? A rough estimate on the cost of materials

Thank you, Cole. I think I spent about $400 mostly in paint and Cosmoline. Metal and welding supplies were less than half that total. I did spend quite a bit on new tools, though. I had to upgrade my welder and I bought a magnetic drill. Tools were probably about $1k. So if you count both materials and tools, somewhere around $1400, I think.

Dude where are you located at and how much would you charge to do this exact same job I could bring my truck and a clean tail section of the frame to you I’m just starting out in life and use my Dakota as a landscaping rig I need you to fix it how much lol

I'm in Denver, Colorado. But no, I don't think you could pay me enough to do it again. Not because it was hard, just because it took a long time. It took like a whole week of work to take it apart, clean it all out, weld it and put it back together. I think the truck was down for a full month because I couldn't fit it in all at once.

Dodge should be ashamed of thererself for putting out such a product I have an 2002 which will turn your stomach if you see a rust on it. It is no longer self tobe on the road. I was going to junk it bout it runs so good I decided to do the same thing I have to find whole frame rails for it mine are beyond repair and beyond patching.
