@@kirbninja - While the WON menu looked nice, it had a 640x480 resolution. So every time you hit escape, your screen would go black for a moment changing resolution which was annoying and inconvinient, which is why they probably got rid of it later on.

well they were trying to unify the interface between steam and the goldsource, so that's why they made it window based (ever click a link to join a server and it pulls up an ui that looks similar to the ui when joining a server in a source game?)
...and since source is heavily modified goldsource, it's also window based
