@12:00 You are only asked to tip when you are being waited on by a waiter or waitress at a restaurant, not a fast food place...like Taco Bell. Or you are asked to tip delivery drivers for deliverling your food if you don't want to run out and get it. Leaving tips for maids at hotels if you have a wild night in the room is something else that doesn't often get discussed. My wife is Filipino. She gets freaked out that I want to "Pay extra" to someone already being paid for their job. I really don't mind leaving an extra $10 in the Philippines though. That could literally be the difference in life and death for someone or their family member as far as food or medicine goes. Though there are some places it is considered rude I have found out recently.

The most important thing about the "America" thing is that it was not started by people of the USA. It was started by other countries that wanted something easier to say. It's easy to say Canadian, Mexican, etc., but let's face it, nobody wants to say "United Statesian".

When you have a family, buying a gallon of milk is not unusual. Cereal is a popular breakfast meal, for children and adults alike. It is an ingredient in many recipes and added to coffee and tea. In cold weather it is the main ingredient in hot cocoa. Milk and cookies is a popular snack in the US. Of course some people drink milk by the glassful, but it’s commonly served in many other ways.

12:10 No need to tip at fast food places. You usually only tip when a service worker spends a significant amount of time providing you a service. Waitress at a sit down restaurant, a barber, a taxi driver, a bartender, you can throw a valet a dollar or 2, etc... Anyone who just stands behind a cash register, or who helps you for less than a minute, you don't need to tip.

With regards to the measurement systems, as others have probably already said, we use both the "Metric System" and the "Customary System of Measurement" (also called the "U.S. Customary System", a variation on Imperial, but not quite the same). Most people here use the "Customary System of Measurement" units in common applications and conversations, while most engineering, manufacturing, and scientific applications use the "Metric System." I use both fairly interchangeably myself.

What’s wrong with the size of milk? It lasts about 2 weeks, I think. You can also get half gallons if you have just you or two people in the household. Usually, the gallon ones are bought by people with children/multiple people in the household. I don’t ever think about tax unless it’s a large ticket item because it doesn’t affect the price that much unless the item costs a lot.

The idea that Americans don't know the metric system is an interesting topic. Anyone who chooses a career in the sciences learns the metric system. Lab tech, pharmacy tech, nursing etc all use metrics. Our sodas are sold by the liter, not the gallon. Even our drug dealers no longer cell by the oz preferring to sell by the gram.😂 I use both systems regularly except temperature. F° seems more precise than C°.

What they say about pharmacies is true. That was a gallon of milk. 128 Fluid oz, or just under 3.8 liters.
You don't have to tip at fast food resturants. So don't worry about it at McDonalds, Taco Bell, Burger King, Wendy's or similar places. Sit down resturants you should tip.
There is some controversy about the Pledge being mandatory in some schools. SCOTUS decided in the West Virginia Board of Education vs. Barnette case in 1943 that it shouldn't be mandatory, but many of the states ignore this ruling. The reasoning is that the government doesn't get to decide what is orthodox in matters of opinion and it doesn't have the right to make people profess any particular belief by word or deed.
The red plastic Solo cups are real.
As for metric vs imperial it's a bit of a mess. Buy gasoline in the U.S. it's in gallons, same for milk, or orange juice. That would include smaller units like a quart (1/4 gallon) or half gallons. Get soda, there are 2 liter bottles, but there are also 12 fl. oz cans. I don't really drink soda anymore, but there might still be some 16 fl. oz (pint) bottles. 500 mL water bottles are labeled in ounces in larger print and mL in smaller print. Medicine, in pill or capsule form would be in metric. When I was a kid, we learned both, but imperial first.
For additional confuson solids are in ounces, but liquid ones are in fluid ounces. So one is weight the other volume.

    • @DaveBartlett
      @DaveBartlett 11 месяцев назад

128 fluid ounces in a Gallon?! The Americans are even being ripped off by their weights & measures system: In Europe, a gallon is 160 Fluid oz, nearly 4.55 liters!

The tipping custom has become more of a controversy in the last few years because it isn't just a custom, it's a loophole caused by minimum wage laws.
The minimum wage in the US is mandated to be no lower than $7.25 per hour, though due to the cost of living in different cities and states each state can choose for their minimum to be higher, just not lower.
UNLESS the job is based on tips - If the job is tip based, then the federal, and by extension state minimum, is only $2.13 per hour which is only 29% of the standard minimum. This allows businesses, mainly sit-down restaurants, to pay their staff much lower wages with the expectation that the employee will make up the difference in the form of tips so in that regard tipping isn't simply a kind gesture, its often the difference as to whether or not someone can afford groceries or rent.
While it is possible for a waiter at a nice restaurant to in theory bring home $400+ in tips alone on a busy Saturday evening, this is not the common outcome for most in the food-service industry.

  • @cheryla7480
    @cheryla7480 8 месяцев назад +2

Most people from other countries are used to purchasing items with the price on the label being what you pay. In the US and Canada that is not the case. The sales tax is calculated at the point of sale and added to the price. So a ten dollar item when rung up will now cost you $11.50 once they’ve added the taxes and the taxes all vary depending on what state/province you are in.

  • @tomb7942
    @tomb7942 11 месяцев назад +10

Usually its not a pharmacy that sells groceries.
Its a grocery store that also has a pharmacy.
Drinking age was changed because many 18 year olds are still in HS and were buying for friends.
Sure, pay people more and have the prices increase even more because now that tip money is being taxed.
Fast food is not tipped, at least normally, unless you got it delivered to you.
    Movie was Independence day.
    Two myths:
    1) NO healthcare is free. You pay for it one way or another.
    2) You can make very modest payments on your medical debt, sometimes as low as 25/month.
And fun fact, the US subsidizes other countries health care by allowing US Pharma companies to sell drugs developed in the US using US tax benefits overseas for less than they are sold in the US.
And nothing that has to provided by others can be a right. There are costs involved and there are limited numbers of doctors for instance, and there has to be some sort of way to ration it. Not everyone can have the best doctor..
And the US has the best healthcare tech in the world for a reason and you are fooling yourself if you think that health care isn't being rationed in your country.
If I have to pay for others healthcare, then I need to have some control over how they live. Smokers, fat, heavy drinkers, whatever.
Other countries pay in other ways. For instance, the average size of a home in Sweden is about 800 sq. ft. In the US, its closer to 2400 sq. ft.
Tell Americans they have to live in MUCH smaller homes in exchange to "free" health care and see what happens.
And even today the UK's NHS is blowing up for lack of funding and you need to be on a 6 month waiting lists for many procedures in Canada.
And this is after the US pays the lions share of the cost to defend Europe.
Allowing big pharma to buy ads makes the "news" networks unwilling to report negative things about the drug companies.
The red or blue "solo" cups are used for drinks at social gatherings, not just with alcohol, so they can be tossed instead of someone having to worry about washing scores of glasses. Also, they don't break and if you misplace yours, just grab another.
We use the Imperial system mainly because we are used to it and our cities are laid out using those measurements.
Remember the milk, that was a gallon of milk.
I'm not saying that metric isn't in many ways better, but look up the road network and see how the road grid is laid out in miles.

Those who don't have healthcare will still seek help only when extremely ill. If they can't pay, it is written off as bad debt which is tax deductible. When something is tax deductible, the rest of us have to pay more in taxes. So you still pay. What is better is offer them healthcare so that they can stay healthy. Preventive care is always cheaper than catastrophic care.

"Fast food" restaurants don't require tipping. McDonalds, Taco Bell, Burger King....just pay your bill. They pay their employees at least minimum wage. A more traditional "sit-down" restaurant or bar, however, generally pays the employees like $5-8/hour (vs the minimum that is usually $10-15), you should tip 15-20%

Our health care is in a shambles. I definitely don’t have the answers but I once had a boss that was Canadian American, her mother living in Canada and was diagnosed with cancer. She brought her mother to the US for her healthcare because, in her words, “I don’t want the government deciding how much they think my mom’s life is worth” … but I also paid just over $2000 for an ambulance ride to the hospital, because most ambulance companies do not contract with insurance companies, which feels like a crime. Just my two cents… I definitely don’t have the dollars for this problem

In a nice restaurant with linen napkins, still not REQUIRED, but IS expected. 15-20% of the bill. 3. In an expensive restaurant, a very good waiter can make $300-500 a night on Fridays and Saturdays. To sum up, I tip 2-3 times PER MONTH.

Hi. 3. Tipping ...."used to be" restaurant servers had a normal salary, and what tips they picked up, WERE, their "fun money". Well, that good ol' IRS ruled some time back now, that all tips were to be counted as "salary", and counted and included on your tax papers for the year. In return, what the restaurants did, was lessen the servers' paychecks by HALF, so when the restaurants report their tax papers, the paychecks reported were less!

Sales tax is so confusing here. In California we pay sales tax to the state, there may be a county sales tax, a city sales tax, and sometimes even smaller units of geography who have sales tax. And what is taxable may be different in each area. For example many groceries are not taxed, but some prepared food is taxed. Im never sure what may happen.
The red cups… many years ago, in college, if you bought a keg of beer you got a free stack of red cups. Not sure anything is free anymore, but the tradition comes from keggers.
And some things i didnt see about tipping but help explain. Tips didn’t used to be taxable income. They are now. Since some tips are left in cash, there is a percentage of service work which is taxable even if no one left a tip. Who you tip - no to fast food, groceries, stores, takeout. A bit for fancy coffee. Tip well and in cash for mixed drinks and good food. They are not being paid for what their service is worth. Oh and check the bill if you’re in a large group - they add in an automatic tip if your server has been covering a large group.
Does impact service quality - traveling Europe Ive encountered actively hostile service. While friends and relatives from Europe are amazed at the care and attention of servers in even a diner.😊

"All in one" is key for shopping. Most grocery stores have a pharmacy, so you can pick up prescriptions while doing your weekly shopping. Most pharmacies have a grocery section (not usually as large as entire grocery store, though). We do have "drug store makeup." Is that a thing elsewhere? You can buy makeup at a makeup store (like Sephora or Ulta), high-end mall stores (or online) VERY expensive, fancy makeup; or you can buy it at the pharmacy. It's interesting to see debates on which lipstick wore better through the day: a $45 lipstick from a name brand, or a $7 lipstick from the drug store.
Re: tipping - the "problem" is not only the servers are paid below minimum wage (it was $2.25 30 years ago, when min wage was $7:50); but that the taxes are collected on 15% of sales. You pay taxes on income that you never even got! So for me, the bare minimum tip is 15%. Great service - above and beyond - tip closer to 20%-25%. If the service was HORRIBLE, speak to a manager (I hate to sound like a "Karen") about what was wrong. If you're upset about the service, most managers will listen to complaints, but do you want to take money OUT of the pocket of the person serving you, especially if the issue was beyond the waiter's control?

Grocery stores have long had pharmacies in them, and now the pharmacy chains are adding more groceries.

Hi. When I was in Thailand, years ago, everything that came into the country was taxed EQUAL to what the cost of the item was to the merchant! That was my cost to purchase, and the tax money went to the king.
Here, where I live in Louisiana, the price I pay in the store, has a state tax AND a city tax added to my purchase at the register. Each city tax is different. Each state tax is different, and might include a county tax, too, or so I've heard. IN NYC, "used to be", your salary had a federal income tax, a state income tax, and a city income tax, even if you arrived in NYC from your house in Connecticut!!

I hate to break it to you, but Europeans are going to need to be working a lot more (longer days, less days off) in the not so distant future. Much like the US is dead broke, so is the EU. Sooner or later all the free stuff is going bye-bye, as gov't cut social programs & the cost of living increases. Austerity is coming the to EU fast & furious.
As far as Western healthcare (US & EU) it collapsing. This is partly because of demographics as there are more elderly people than younger people paying. Countries like the UK & Canada already ration healthcare especially for the elderly since they need more costly services than younger people. In the US we spend more per capita on healthcare than every where else. Total gov't healthcare will not solve this. This is largely because americans do not take care of themselves, and healthcare professions push unnecessary drugs that trigger worse health problems later in life. Do to the US c19 vaccines, large numbers of US people have developed auto-immune diseases which will costs 10s of trillions in additional healthcare. Meanwhile large numbers of hospitals are going bankrupt because patients aren't able to pay the deductibles for medical services rendered.

You do not tip at fast food restaurants like McDonalds or Taco Bell where you wait at the counter for your food and then walk the food to your table yourself, or they give you your bag of food through the drive in window and you grab the food through your car window and take it into your car.
You tip at restaurants where they sit you at a table and a waiter or waitress gives you a menu, takes your order, brings your food and drinks to your table, refills your drinks and bring extra courses to your table, clears the table of empty plates, and eventually brings your bill to your table, takes your money and returns any change back to your table if you paid in cash. The waiter and waitress did just about everything but cook your food and wash your plates; they certainly deserve a tip considering they are paid less than minimum wage. The cooks and dishwashers are paid at least minimum wage, just like they and the order taker are at fast food restaurants. Remember, it was the Union of Railroad Porters that established this practice in the USA, as mentioned in this video.
In the USA, to sell prescription drugs you must have a pharmacists license. To sell anything else you do not need a license at all. So grocery stores with a hired license pharmacists can sell prescription drugs, and to compete in the market a pharmacists in a drug store can sell anything they want too. There are plenty of over the counter, non prescription drugs you can buy in ether a drug or grocery store. But to sell prescription drugs, you need a license pharmacists, usually located specifically at the pharmacy section of any store. In the USA, you can buy prescription drugs at discount, grocery, drug, and mail order stores, as long as they have a license pharmacists managing it.
Sales taxes are similar to value added taxes, but they are not the same. Value added taxes are charge by individual nations, and taxed on each step of the distribution chain. Sales taxes are charged by individual states and cities, not by the nation, and are taxed on the final sale.
For example let’s take a non food agricultural product, like a 2x4 8 foot long piece of lumber. In the USA, no tax is collected along its distribution chain, forest company, trucking company, collection warehouse, trucking company, lumber mill, trucking company, hardware store warehouse, trucking company, individual hardware store, and you the customer buying the lumber for final use. The sales tax is paid by you when you bought the lumber from the hardware store that made the final sale. Only the hardware store had to get a sales tax license to sell the lumber, and only it had to collect any tax. In Europe, every step along the distribution chain has to get a license from the national government to collect value added taxes, the lumber company, the trucking companies, the warehouses, and the hardware stores. Lots more government interactions over just taxes on any product.
And remember, the value added taxes are set individually in every nation. Sales taxes are set by individual states and cities. In a national advertising campaign, hardware stores in the USA set the price of the lumber for a national price, then individual states and cities charge additional sales taxes. The hardware store is not going to made an individual ad to advertise a price for a product for all 50 states and for every city. Can you imagine McDonalds making a national ad for a season of Filet o Fish sandwiches during Lent at two for $5, with minor changes accounting for sales taxes for thousands of individual cities?
Whether you pay health care insurance individually or collectively takes a huge bite out of your income either way.
The agricultural lands settled after the USA became a nation was surveyed into one square mile sections, all the land settled under the Homestead Act was settled in quarter mile (160 acres) sections. Take a google earth view of western Kansas or Oklahoma for examples, note the grid work of dirt and paved county roads in one mile sections. When Americans say as long as a country mile, that is its root. It was intuitive. It will take centuries for the USA to change over fully to the metric system, because the USA was not surveyed into kilometer square sections.

The voting age and the drinking age were the same at one time. The voting age in America was changed from 21 to 18 during the 1960s and was driven in part by the military draft held during the Vietnam War. Males could be drafted at 18 but couldn't vote until 21. There was something unconscionable about that so it was changed but the drinking age stayed at 21.

4 day work week: in the late 1700s / early 1800s, it took 98% of the human population working agricultural jobs to feed the full 100%. It took more labor to keep society going, and people worked much longer than 8 hours per day, 5 days a week. Since the late 1800s, the average amount of labor needed per person to keep society going, started dropping slowly and steadily. (Nowadays, only about 2% of the population needs to work agricultural jobs to feed the full 100%.) Moving to a 4 day work week is the next step in the progression, which is why you feel it's a better balance than 5 days/week. However, (especially in the US and probably many other places), it's due to outdated policies set during the great depression that we're stuck with 8x5 being a "full work week" even though that's now more labor than the average amount needed per person.
