So did you store most in freezer?
There is no way that tiny little bird will eat ALL OF THAT FOOD before it spoils.
So then you end up throwing all of those bags you prepared away, and probably 1 of those ice cub trays of food as well.
What a waste of money, food, time, and energy that you could have spent having fun with your bird, just to throw over half of it in the trash.
You might as well just throw a hundred dollar bill in your trash can, and cut out the rest of it.
This is the exact reason why I buy freeze dried, and dehydrated fruits, and vegetables for my birds.
To think there are children in third world countries that are starving to death, while rich Americans are buying far to much fruits & veg for their parrots, which spoils, rots, and ends up being thrown in the trash instead of being used to keep someone alive by filling their stomach. What a shame!
@@gkennedy0969 fruits and veg aren’t helping anyone especially starving fucking kids in Africa… they need meat,animal fat, dairy, and some calorie dense foods like white rice or potatoes
@@gkennedy0969 they have many other birds like cockatoos, macaws, conures, budgies etc larger birds need more food and sometimes they even have rescue birds pls know them properly before writing these types of comments
I would use IceTrays for the first overnight Freezing, then remove the Veggie Cubes and store them in bags. So I can take out one of the cubes every evening for the next morning to be thawed. :)
Yeh I use ice trays to do my IRNs veges. I just leave them in the trays & take one or 2 out (depending on the icecube sizes), every night to thaw for the morning. My IRN seems to dislike anything orange, regardless of what it is, so I tend to puree the carrot & and yellow/orange peppers so she can't pick it out & throw it down to my dog lol

I use quart size, ziplock-style, foodsaver bags, and a small VMSTR brand handheld vacuum. I put the chop in and make it very flat, then use the vacuum to suck out the air.
I break off pieces as needed and put it in a container to thaw in fridge overnight. It saves a ton of freezer space.
I’m a new green cheek conure owner and have learned so much from the bird lovers of RUclips. I was thrilled to make chop for my little guy and he loves his chop block he gets every morning. Thank you for helping me give my bird the best!

remember; you can also do the first freeze in the ice trays, and then come back and dump all the frozen blocks into a big bag, to make room for more/ free up your ice trays.

I have a Green Cheek Conure his name is Star, he was rescued from a horrible place, he was left in a small cage in a room on the floor with no interaction with people, I got him for my birthday a year and a half ago, he will be 3 in April, when I got him I couldn't touch him or hold him he would bite me, I got him a huge cage and he can come in and out as he pleases, I've introduced him to a lot of different foods his favorites that I've noticed so far is coconut, bananas, and strawberries, but he loves his coconut, we have come a long way, but we both have a lot to learn, he will fly to me now and let me touch him but only on his terms which is ok by me, I've noticed when I play your video's he will make these cute cooing noises when your birds your working with makes noises, we just want to thank you for all of your help

I freeze 2-3days worth in snack bags, rolled tightly. (Like breakfast burritos). Then I put those into gallon freezer bags to freeze and store. This reduces their air exchange (our enemy in frozen food storage). It’s feet easy to pull out a “birdie burrito” from the freezer, to thaw ahead in the fridge, when I see I’ve only got one more thawed serving left. My 27+ y/o CAG is happier & healthier than ever, thanks to the seasonal feeding system & permission based training, as taught by BirdTricks.
Don’t be afraid to make too much. Your local avian rescue will appreciate anything you predict you can’t serve within 4 months. 💜🐦

While I don't have any birds now, I did have budgies and zebra finches for years, and loved them. I have shared in your joys and sadly the heartbreaks too that go with having any pets.

Hey! Just wondering how long this will typically last for a single GCC. I am interested in getting my first parrot and I am looking at the GCC. I heard they’re great parrots and was wondering if this is something that needs to be done weekly, monthly, etc. all the tips help. Thank you!
I have read the Jamie typically makes big batches I believe she said weekly (could be mistaken) and thaws small amounts for daily consumption. I would feed some chop in the morning and allow them to have access to a healthy pellet like Harrisons, or Tops (I find Harrisons more readily accepted by my birds) throughout the day.
If you make a large batch and freeze it you may only have to do this once a month. Some birds, (including my cockatiel) prefer the texture of fresh chop instead of frozen and thawed since the veggies are crunchier that way. It is difficult to predict what your bird's preferences will be before you get him/her, but if your bird does prefer fresh chop you may want to make a smaller batch once a week and store it in the fridge.
In my opinion, even the healthiest pellets that have so far been created do not have good enough ingredients to make up a large part of a bird's diet. My cockatiel absolutely loves Harrison's pellets, so he gets a small amount every day in the form of training and foraging treats. But the only food that he is given freely in his bowl to eat as much as he wants is his chop. If you want to learn more about proper parrot nutrition, check out the RUclips channel BirdNerdSophie!
I make a big batch for my IRN about once every 3ish months. The amount I make usually fills 4 icecube trays. I find it's SO much easier doing it this way for me as I have been on bedrest for a little over a year now & can only be up for 2 hours a day. Preparing the food takes roughly between half an hour to an hour then my son helps me fill up the ice trays to make the process faster for me, then we seal each tray in a bag & stick it in the freezer. Then all you need to do is remove one or 2 pieces from the trays every night for your bird in the mornings.
Mske sure you're ok with an animal that lives for 35 years. I adore my GCC but it definitelycomes with challenges!

Do you have any suggestions for veggies for an Indian Ringneck?I make him about 6 small bowls a day, one each grapes, watermelon, banana, the others corn, broccoli and a bell pepper (I change all these for variety) but he only really loves corn, he only picks at the broccoli/cauliflower, his majority is the fruits...he also doesn't show much interest in his seed mix, just sunflower seeds, peanuts in shell and millet. I could really use some advice, he's our first parrot. Thank you

Why do you have the straws sticking out. How long does it keep for? How many ice cups full would you feed a day? I have two female green cheek conures. Do they mind eating it cold or do you warm it up?
4 months (pretty sure) frozen and then you take it out as you need it it depends on individual bird there a birdtricks video on it (called what is the right proportion to feed my bird) definitely feed it cold you can also try just giving it to them not de-frosted at all

I second this question! The veggies always get mushy and smell weird once I defrost them and hardly seem appetizing. Any tips or tricks to keep them fresh?
Only defrost 3-4 days tops at a time. You can strain it upon defrosting if your birds prefer a drier texture. I defrost mine and then add ground flax seed to absorb the moisture instead.

How would you prevent this from getting soggy in the freezer? That’s always my problems with pre-preparing fresh food
KEEP it frozen. don't have it coming in and out of the freezer all the time. ice cube trays make a great amount for daily feeding (for a GCC sized bird, anyway). the big bags are for more like a week at a time or so... take them out, it'll get wet and mushy anyway... but then you mix in flax seed or something like that to soak it up, and serve it like that!

I am looking for a recipe for a YellowNapeAmazon, an Umbrella Cockotoo and a smaller Parrot who is perhaps a conure, I’m not sure, my friend passed away and I adopted him.
Would this be the same for a nanday?
I would love it if my lovebirds ate this, but they donť want to eat chopped vegetables. Still trying though and always will, till they eat it eventually (I hope).
If you find something your love bird really likes, you can either add it to the mix fresh once defrosted or you can use a sort of binding ingredient to gain interest like I did with my budgie. I used steamed sweet potato for Berry.
@@BirdTricks Thanks, I will keep it in mind❤. Just a few days ago I got your seasonal feeding system and am trying to teach the birds to eat it. I mix their seed mix into it in the morning so they have to get their beaks into it and am also trying to teach them through training, the same way I taught them how to eat pellets (although they don't eat them all the time so they are on seeds in the morning and pellets in the evening). I reward them every time they touch it, come closer to it, or take it in their beaks. But I will definitely try to use the sweet potato and see what they think.
I have a question too... How long can we store these as I have only one bird and I don't want so much food to go waste.

Quick question for you & your listeners: I used to have a Blue Fronted Amazon. She was a wonderment! She used to amuse herself (and me!) by perfecting “ noises”, as in household or yard noises. She could exactly mimic the telephone, microwave, hairdryer, weed wacker, any neighbors pet. You get the picture... I was told if your bird imitates sounds, he is unlikely to speak. Well my Ruffles had a large vocabulary. Do your parrots imitate machines & household everyday noises? Thank you. I love your channel! 🦜💕💋🥰
Our budgie Blueberry sounds just like the microwave!
My mom's Arican Gray can mimic everyone's voices to the extent when you're in a different room you think that person is talking to you. She speaks appropriately, saying hello when you arrive and bye bye when you leave! She can also mimic the sound of running water. She's a hoot!

I'm wondering if there is any research on exotic birds and feeding spinach? Spinach blocks the bodies ability to absorb calcium uptake in ducks, chickens, geese and humans. Feed a non problematic laying hen spinach and with in a day or so you will have a egg bound hen due to calcium deficiency. Vitamin D3, niacin and folate are very dependant on each other to work properly in the body. I could be wrong but I prefer to be safe than sorry and add other types of greens instead of spinach to all of my birds diets.

Hello, I have a few questions, why don’t you peel the vegetables first, like the carrots? Also, my two green cheeks only like to eat fruit but my two cockatiels like vegetables? Also, my green cheeks don’t look like your little bird, mine are darker with a dark head.

There really is no reason to peel everything if you wash them really well. They have a color variation of the green cheek calls a pineapple green cheek. There is many color variations of the green cheek. It sounds like you have the original coloring. Also there is a lot of sugar in fruit that just isn't great for birds all the time. You can always use the fruit they love to entice them to eat the veggies they really need.
Mostly because it is not necessary to peel them and the whole veggie has a ton of nutrients you can use but you can definitely peel things if you want or prefer. You can add fruit to the defrosted amount to entice your bird but I wouldn't do it long term as there's not a lot of nutritional value in fruit for parrots - better to take up that crop space with veggies instead. And there are a ton of different color variations of green cheeks! This one is a pineapple green cheek so it's a lot lighter in color.
I can't speak for their personal reasoning, but I can say that you don't actually HAVE to peel the carrots (even for human consumption), at least. I'm not sure if the same is true for turnip/swede/rutabaga (or other root veg), though. With the carrots, it's just something people habitually do to remove dirt instead of scrubbing the dirt off with a brush or something (which is what some people do instead). They're fine to eat if you clean them properly, and I don't think the texture is really any different from peeled carrots, unless they're a bit elderly.
I think the bird in the video is a pineapple green cheek, so that's why the colouring is different from yours (which I assume are just 'regular' green cheeks).

Eugene is still somewhat fussy about his slaw, but I am getting him to eat it. Like a toddler, he always eats the beans and then runs so I have to convince him to eat the rest. 🙄
Mine love the beans best too so I only include them every OTHER time I make it lol

This is the exact reason why I buy freeze dried, and dehydrated fruits, and vegetables for my birds, instead of wasting so much time, money, and energy, on buying fresh stuff that has to be kept refrigerated, only for it to go bad before they ever even get to half of it. Especially since I can't just run to the store everyday to buy new fresh stuff to make for them. I only go grocery shopping once a month, because I only get one trip to the grocery store a month. So if I was to buy enough fresh fruits and veg to last them all month long, it wouldn't last that long at all, because it would all spoil and rot before the end of the month, and before they could ever even come close to eating half of all that food.

You freeze it.
The shelf life of frozen vegetables is between 8-12 months, so it’s pretty efficient from a preparation standpoint.

You really went out to rant just to rant? Look at a bit of the context before you comment. They freeze the food, and she has other parrots too to feed it to. And there can be a big nutritional difference between frozen and dehydrated, so be wary of that.
I understand your intention but I think you should be educated on what happens to veggies after it's been chopped. It's already losing its nutrients, then you freeze it and it's absolutely far from having any nutrients in it. This is exactly why birds die out of nowhere and get sick one day because of healthy issues. Large food distributors don't care about healthy soil, so that means the veggies you get especially not organic have very little in them. This is why I would add turmeric, ginger, burdock root, blue Klamath algae, goji berries, hemp, chia and things of that sort. It is time in society where we really need to add herbs and specialty foods to our parrots dishes because chopped veggies like that are losing its enzymatic function. Diet in this day in age isn't just as simple as putting veggies together. It takes more work and strategy because our food system sucks. I don't believe this is the healthiest dish at all. I'm sorry but I just can't.
I just found this out the hard way! I was doing this for nearly a year and just got my cockatiels blood results back and she’s vary deficient in calcium and protein. I was so confused cause she’s been eating this every day as well as pellets and sprouts. I realised it may be because i processed it to mush and then froze it which makes everyday feeding easier but so much nutritional value was lost. Now I need to figure out how to give her healthy food that’s fresh 😬
Heavily depends on how you do it. Sometimes, frozen veggies have more nutrition than ones left in the fridge.
