Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau was not a product of the star-production system. He was a man of talent who was called upon to suffer and then survived all. His music is a product of his life lived experience. We should always consider that when we praise his work.

The solo oboe on many of Richter's Bach recordings is *Manfred* Clement, not Wolfgang, as mentioned below. For an audio- visual experience of Clement's superb playing, see Richter's Brandenburg Concertos on youtube. The first adagio in Brandenburg #1 begins with Clement's electrifying high a, and sets the tone of that movement. IMHO, Clement is also the soloist here. One can listen to his playing over and over again, and learn something new each time--same with DFD.

    1. Aria B
    Oboe, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo
    Auf meine begierigen Arme genommen;
    Ich habe genug!
    Ich hab ihn erblickt,
    Mein Glaube hat Jesum ans Herze gedrückt;
Nun wünsch ich, noch heute mit Freuden
    Von hinnen zu scheiden.
    2. Recitativo B
    Continuo
    Der Herr erretten;
Ach! wäre doch mein Abschied hier,
Mit Freuden sagt ich, Welt, zu dir:
    Ich habe genug.
    3. Aria B
    Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo
    Schlummert ein, ihr matten Augen,
    Fallet sanft und selig zu!
Welt, ich bleibe nicht mehr hier,
Hab ich doch kein Teil an dir,
    Das der Seele könnte taugen.
Hier muss ich das Elend bauen,
Aber dort, dort werd ich schauen
    Süßen Friede, stille Ruh.
    4. Recitativo B
    Organo
Mein Gott! wenn kömmt das schöne: Nun!
Da ich im Friede fahren werde
Und in dem Sande kühler Erde
Und dort bei dir im Schoße ruhn?
    Der Abschied ist gemacht,
    Welt, gute Nacht!
    5. Aria B
    Oboe, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo
Ich freue mich auf meinen Tod,
Ach, hätt er sich schon eingefunden.
    Da entkomm ich aller Not,
Die mich noch auf der Welt gebunden.

Wonderful voice wonderful aria but Simeon was old and this is the voice of a young man not one approaching death.

John Cruickshank Let me suggest something about the important issue you raise. If this were an opera I'd agree Simeon should be portrayed realistically. But a cantata usually deals with FEELINGS, and makes them more universal. Simeon is approaching death, yes. But it's not literally Simeon experiencing his end. It is mankind.

@@ralphficker167. There is a desperation and sense of an ending in this song , even if the certainty of salvation is there, The voice though wonderful has a beauty that somehow takes away from the meaning of the piece. It needs a big bass-baritone to put this wonderful music over.

@@starnafin Thanks for the conversation. I think you're describing your big burly bass-baritone** in a realistic staged opera about a man looking death in the face. But I think this music wouldn't work there. It's too contemplative, too broad, too tender. Fischer-Dieskau wouldn't audition because he'd never get the part!! You're almost making my point about the difference. There's certainly room for more than one kind of story "about" Simeon. But I think this music works only for the story it's telling.
**your "big bass-baritone" became my "big burly bass-baritone". If you're interested in continuing the conversation, the house rule states that you have to add a fifth "b" word. But I doubt you're as crazy as I am.
