  • In this video, we'll be discussing the differences between OpenCore and OpenCore Legacy Patcher. OpenCore is a boot loader that allows you to boot macOS on non-Apple hardware, while OpenCore Legacy Patcher is a tool that helps you create a bootable USB installer for macOS on older, unsupported Macs.
    Things covered:
    - boot loaders
    - macOS security and why OpenCore functions the way it does
    - integrity protection: System integrity protection (SIP) and Metadata integrity protection
    - Kexts, Kext Injection, Kext patches
    - OpenCore Legacy Patcher

    Perhaps Apple should introduce paid support for old Macs, I wouldn't mind paying a small fee for official support after a number of years, I'm glad we have OpenCore to fallback on.

    • @ivanmytube

      It’s a bit naive to think like that. What Apple wants is to ask you to paid full price for a replacement machine with only little additional/improved features or a little faster machine. Apple is very mind that you just pay so little but thinking of getting so much support.

    I installed OCLP 6.1 on my 2012 Macpro a few days ago. I had a few issues but managed it after a couple of tries. I remember years ago hacking wifi firmware to get my wireless card to work on Linux. Compared to that, it was easy. It's so cool to be running Monterrey on old hardware! Thanks so much for these videos.

I don’t think that’s bad as I watch those videos too (can’t say I like the rumor ones) but as technical user I’m making the sort of stuff I’d want to see. Most of the real hardcore Mac nerds are all about retro stuff. I enjoy that content but it’s surprising how I don’t see as much for more modern macs.

    I really haven't figured this out successfully, I kinda caved into buying a real Mac with the M1
    Pretty sweet setup, still trying to figure out how to build a Hackintosh into my AMD TrueNAS Scale system im making to mess with.
    Back in the early 2k's there was a ALOSHI DVD Image I belie it was called, I was able to get that version of OSX Leopard I believe it was, working on a PIII Dell tower & got it running ProTools.

      Hackintoshes are such a headache. I used a flashed mobo briefly with a PC and returned everything since it was a house of cards. I don't know if there's really any idea Hackintosh build, hence why people still hoard the old classic Mac Pros as for many it's worth dealing with really old hardware vs unsupported hardware. These days I'm on a Mac Pro 2019 and M1 Max myself but I mess with the OpenCore.

I also wanted to say thanks for that Sonoma wallpaper app that I use, it allowed me to compile a folder on my desktop (Monterey & now Ventura) so that I can listen to music while one of those wallpapers does it's thing! Not quite like watching 'paint dry' just better. I did have one question though - My MP 5,1 (upgraded 4,1) has Ventura 13.6.7 and there is an update of Safari waiting which I believe will have a security update inside. Can I just update or will this involve something else also?

    I tried entering the command "sudo chmod -R 777 /Volumes/YourVolumeName" in the Terminal with my volume name, it asked for my password, seem to accept it as normal and I still can't write lets say a Folder at the disk level. I tried then to do it manually via the Information it says "That I do not have the permissions required"!

      I’m not sure what you’re trying to accomplish, but if you’re trying to modify the system or portions of the root library, Sudo won’t get you there as its not owned by the root. It’s read only partition in the APFS as it’s a container format. It’s presented transparently to the user.

      So.... your linux install was probably for BIOS and not EFI. What this means is if you hold down the Option key you should see it as a bootable volume but you probably won't see it with OpenCore's boot loader. Basically, it should still be a boot option. We are probably about 3-5 years from this being a concern and that’ll largely depend on the technical feasibility of it and if the team members of OpenCore are interested in Apple Silicon at all. Most likely it wouldn’t be OpenCore as OpenCore is UEFI based and Apple Silicon uses custom firmware. Apple silicon has more in common with iOS devices when it comes to firmware than an x86 Mac.

      Nope. This comes up now and again in my comments. Unfortunately, it's easier to port drivers from older OSes to modern ones than vice versa and the demand isn't there from the community. Most people who need to run old OSes will either buy an old machine for that use case, or use a virtual machine or more likely, figure out a work around or abandon said software.
      Mac Mini 2009s are practically free. Those will run OS X 10.8 and do it reasonably well. You could screen share into said computer.

      The Mac Pro 5,1 are a faster computer if you have the dual CPU models outfitted with the upper end 6-Core CPUs. OS X 10.8 though caps out at 96 GB of RAM and lacks the memory management of newer OSes, whereas later versions of Mac OS let the cMPs use 128 GB and with OpenCore, 192 GB.

    Can I trust 0CLP with personal data on my machine? I know I have to make the decision myself and measure the risk blah blah blah, but do any of you have personal private information on an 0CLP computer? I mean what benefit do the OCLP guys get for doing this free work? Sure it’s open source but is it the actual code or is it just a copy of all the code and it’s what they say is all the code when it could be missing parts? Could these guys just look at anybody’s computer and what’s in it? I would love to Upgrade my computer but I don’t see the point of doing it if I can’t even use it for personal use. Do you or any of you out there? Have your personal information on these machines and if so why do you trust it? I would really like to know because I would really like to feel good about running Ventura on my old MacBook Pro and use Universal Control with my iPad. Thx

    • @dmug
      @dmug  Год назад +1

      It’s an open source project so there’s a lot of eyes on it. there’s nothing inherently preventing privacy violation in OpenCore via kext injection.
      Yes, someone could develop malware and make it as part of a OpenCore configuration but being open source, this almost certainly would not make it into any sort of distribution as the project maintainers would not accept said code. Someone could alter it or include their malicious but then it wouldn't be from the official repo.
      I would recommend checking out OpenCore groups for a better break down. If you're fearful of OpenSource, a lot of core technologies that power macOS are opensource, down to the terminal with ZSH or it's networking code like SMB or Apache. Open source has it's pros and cons, but generally for security is viewed as positive.

      @@dmug thanks for the reply. I wouldn’t ask you for advice on personal security, only on how you use this technology. I just don’t see the point in doing it, if I can’t use it as a personal computer. I mean what are all these people using it for?

    • @dmug
      @dmug  Год назад +2

      @@mofosoto I'd highly recommend taking your security concerns to an OpenCore group, they exist on Reddit, Facebook, MacRumors, etc. There's no more security risk here than running, say, a Hackintosh. Changes are being injected into macOS via boot loader, and they aren't nefarious. Using OpenCore doesn't lower macOS's security either as you don't have to disable core technologies like SIP. The developers of OpenCore do not gain access to your passwords or encryption keys. In fact, the changes are injected long before most of the networking that'd be required to handle such changes is even loaded, and it'd require some gymnastics to insert the sort of malware that'd be required to siphon data.
      There are thousands if not hundreds of thousands, of users of OpenCore who use it daily as a way to run a Hackintosh or extend old life to an old machine and use it with personal data. Thus far, there have been no reports of suspicious packages, network activity or computer behavior, or mass data theft from users of OpenCore. At some point with, say, a keylogger, said malware would need to send the data _somewhere_ to be useful. Plus, the project is hosted on GitHub, which has its own TOS. Malware cannot be hosted on GitHub as it violates it. They do have some tools that scan for common nefarious packages, so said malware authors would also have to be tricky enough to evade basic detection and the many, many eyes of people who are using OpenCore and viewing its source code.
      It's in the realm of reality it could be stealing your data, but I'd consider it very unlikely. If you don't feel comfortable using? Then the answer is simple, don't. However, I'd recommend reaching out to people who are even more versed than me as I do not daily drive OpenCore.
