Yeah it sounds nice, but the question is, if he's honest in that heated moment. The ego thing in you isn't just the insults and guilty trips, and the so called: the negative things. It's also making the compliment, in hoping to stop the argument as fast as possible for your sake. It's never ending thing to be speculating, if the person that is saying to you this thing, is honest. Maybe the answer is: "I'm okay with me being a complicated human being."

This is long, but bear with me lol. I partially agree. I think the first film was a fantasy, two people contemplating what their relationship would be like. It's easy to see only the best in someone when you've spent only 24 hours together. The second film is when things get complicated. They start off as they did before with the debates and elaborate thought experiments, but I think at the end of the film, Jesse is seriously contemplating which direction he wants to go as far as his romantic life is concerned. Should he stay with his wife or take a leap of faith with Celine? But the third film is when those thought experiments they normally engage in are based on their real life experiences, and we see an almost complete 360 from when they were naive 20 somethings that romanticized everything. We get a glimpse into the complexities of their relationship and see that the traits they liked or even romanticized about each other in the first installment are things that cause the most conflict. I think all three films give an honest representation of relationships, and that's why they're so relatable. That natural progression from the optimistic and naive 20s to the mature 30s to the harsh reality of life and relationships in their 40s.

I wouldn't side with either of them, as some of the comments said. I rewatched the whole trilogy yesterday, and being 30 years old, I can now see that its true genius is the ways in which it shows how our view of love and relationships changes over the years. In Sunrise, purely the magic of their time together, the chemistry and romance is enough for them. In Sunset, each has gone through some personal turmoils already and starts to question that maybe there won't be as many people in life they'll have a true emotional connection to and have shared interests with- which is so amazing to me about their relationship; it's not just physical attraction but a lot more than that, and shows how you need to be with someone you can grow with together. And this scene shows how in a long term relationship/marriage it becomes about keeping a scorecard of who's done what for the relationship, which I think is what's happening here. Celine is guiltier of that but Jesse isn't trying to truly listen to her either. And most interestingly, I love how it shows that in some strange way they're almost afraid of being happy and subconsciously start looking for ways to sabotage what they have. Even at the dinner table, they almost don't want to appreciate how they met and how special the start to their relationship was and are being quite sarcastic about it.

"but Jesse isn't trying to truly listen to her either"
Why do you think it is the case? For me it looks like she is continuously attacking him. I liked in Before Sunset when Celine went crazy in the car, because anyone can go crazy and say harsh words, that happens. But this movie looks like that scene again and again: Jesse is trying to assure her that she is okay and loved - even if he does not completely understand her. But does his best and sends the message that 'hey, it is not perfect, but I love you'. But for Celine in this movie it is all about her and even in the end all she does is ignoring all the things she herself said. Did not even apologize on trying to hurt Jesse on several different points.
That's why I don't like this movie. In Before Sunset both of them went through all the different dynamics and states - still they had their different personalities. But here Celine is just lashing out.

@@karamcsandit's a pretty realistic take for most marriages. Eventually the wife gets upset, and the husband just tries to console her and keep the peace. One of the biggest differences I consistently see between men and women in marriages is that many wives constantly keep a running tally in their head of every screw-up the husband makes. Whereas husbands tend to let things go and just move on. Ten years later in a relationship like that, and it's no wonder that women are more likely to divorce and to cheat.

I don't believe either of them cheated. I feel like Jesse didn't answer the question because he felt like he didn't need to explain him self. He tells her that he dedicates his whole life to her and the kids. When Celine keeps accusing Jesse, Jesse comes back with his own. Basically saying that its really easy to do that and that you need trust in a relationship for it to work. When he says he doesn't bring stuff like that up because he doesn't want her to feel trapped (which id imagine you would if you kept being accused of cheating, having that feeling of not being able to go out with anyone because your partner never trust you) is just another way of saying you need Trust.

You might always have your doubts in a relationship and never know if those doubts are true or not, just like us the viewer never know. Again without trust it just won't work in my opinion. Idea for 4th film: Jesse and Celine are seperated, have been for a bit, and on the verge of divorce (having decided to finally get married shortly after the events of Before Midnight). Celine is in Paris, Jesse in Texas. Celine files the papers for divorce, but Jesse hasn't signed them yet. He tells her he will sign them if they take one last trip together, to Vienna to visit the city where they first met. They do and rekindle their love, visiting some of the old places they did in the first movie and new ones, as they walk through the city. They decide to give their marriage another go. Perhaps call the movie After Sunrise. Wish I could tell Richard Linklater this idea. A guy can dream.

I feel like many people here see it just from Jesse's perspective, because Celine is more agresive. Well, I think this fight and the whole third movie just mirrors how trapped they are in the dream of the Vienna fantasy and especially, how trapped they are in the box of their scars and insecurities. Jesse tolerates Celine's emotional states because he just needs to believe that he still loves her enough so his separation from his son still makes sense to him because it was worth his dream girl from Vienna, but it's easier for him to believe that than for her, let's just take a moment to see it from her perspective- yes, I think she didn't even try to find a solution for their problems in this argument, she just wanted to argue, but it's because she is so frustrated... She blames Jesse for everything because it's her way to express how she blames herself for everything. I don't think Jesse tried to blame her here, even though I think deep down, he does blame her, but she feels this way, because she just can't get over the fact that Henry lost his chance to grow up with his father. But she moved to USA to live there with Jesse so he can be with his son, she gave up her life in France, then she needed to come back to give birth to her kids, it must've been so painful to her that the day she gave birth to her beloved daughters caused the separation of the love of her life and his son. She felt helpless, she didn't know how to be a good mother to her children and it is even said here that Jesse cheated on her when she struggled with the frustation that she is failing to be a mother. She loves his son and she would like to raise him with Jesse but his ex uses him to hurt them, that must be so hard for her as well, but she tried to tolerate her. Besides, yes, Jesse is right that Celine is overreacting here, but during the fight, he constantly dismisses her feelings as absurd, although she feels as bad as she is saying. When she told him that she felt helpless as a first-time mother, he told her that she is not the only one on the Earth who feels that way, which is not much empathetic way to answer. In the beggining of this argue, she even tried to insure him that it's not his fault that he and his wife divorced, she tried to insure him that Henry is alright but she felt bad herself and I don't think he even realizes that her feelings are same as his. Not to mention, she just wanted to enter the job that is important to her and now she feels like she can't because Henry needs his father. So yes, I actually feel her side. The reason why she admitted that she is not sure that she still loves him is that he still lives in the Vienna fairy tale, but she already sees their reality, which is to me very important message of this movie- even though you dream about a perfect relationship, it doesn't exist, every soulmate is going to turn to an another person in your life who can fail you and hurt you, but that doesn't mean the life with him is bad, it's the part of that life.

Thank you for writing this. People are dismissing her and hating on her, while I think what she went through is symbolic of what many women go through. And the men (jesse here for example) are usually so chill about it because they simply never had to go through the same exhaustion, were never conditioned to believe and behave as if everyone's well being and feelings were their responsibility, so they simply don't carry that same load. They don't know what it's like. And from the many stories I've heard.. the men being chill/cold/dismissive only adds fuel to the fire.
(I honestly don't particularly love either of them in this scene/movie. But I relate to Celine. A lot. And know many who would as well. And I can't help but see people's dislike of her as inability to empathize with women if not straight up misogyny..)

So when he accused her again her reaction felt more like 'Fuck it,believe what you want'. Its obviously a very very well done movie and trilogy but in this scene Jesse could have done it better. It was such a let down not so much for the cheating, but for all that bs he said wasnt about being open minded, its about him trying to justify his cheating. No matter his answer, the question was not about if he cheated, she traps him, she ask if she would admit that he cheated if her life and daughters depends on it, now any kind of answer would be wrong, the best answer is to throw her an accusation as well, to let her know that he knows what she is doing, and how easy it is to ask a trap question like this.

This is whats fun about the before trilogy. I watched before sunrise and I think of what will happen on the next one, and the next one and the next one. It's so open that the writer/s can do what they want.
And here's this scene, we can't really confirm if they cheated on each other. So it's up to us to figure it out.

and when she told him he's not that much of a sex beast as he thinks he is, I think in the previous movies they talked about how men get easily offended when it comes to sex skills and Celine or Jesse (I dont remember who) told a story about a couple, the girl, after some years told the guy that she wasnt truly satisfied with it, and they split apart because of that. I think they unconsciously use their old conversations to hurt each other in this argument

@Shaun Steverson I'm a woman Shaun and Alan is right, you using the term "misogynistic" to discredit his opinion is pretty lame. Her character is a bitch, not as insufferable as the actress in real life, but still, an egotistical ass. She does give off a "I think I'm better than you" attitude. In all three movies. He has his own issues but between the two, she's worse. In my opinion anyway.

    • @notanothercomedian

My opinion is this. She’s jealous. She’s with a guy who’s successful (he’s achieved all he wants theoretically, even bumping elbows with the greatest of his peers)and it makes her feel like she hasn’t accomplished anything. So instead of blaming herself, she Blames him and their children for her not accomplishing anything. She projects her own dissatisfaction for herself and where she is on other people. And he loves he despite of it. This movie is brilliant.

The thing i like about this movie is that it does show the character’s trait, insecurities, tendencies to the reallest. It make you think that they really have changed a lot to a point you dont really know them any more. But like a few years later you decided to watch the trilogy again and you just starting to see both this character flaw and emotional baggage they carry that you never notice before. And you just realised, both of them here are just what they truly are, not this dreamer, heartthrope, lovefull personality that we thought they were, they were simply trap in the fairy tail land of Vienna dream and now decided to break loose. In a way, we the watcher, was also trap in the Vienna dream and now we face reality of what love truly is.

But for this part, as much as I think Celine was right in some aspects, I have to side with Jesse. Jesse was trying. It seemed like Celine wasn’t. She was ready to throw it all away. She was changing his words and idk. The whole thing felt unfair to Jesse’s son. I was left feeling kinda heartbroken after she said she didn’t love him anymore.

celine was very annoying in this movie. the things jesse does are hard to accept aswell, but she literally was not searching for solutions, she was just seemed like she wants drama and fight. as if she enjoyed the bad vibes she creates. i could never be with a person that does this stuff, even if it is occasionally. she just could have calmly explained what her problem is. she got way too personal and aggressive. doesn't matter what the reasons are, freaking out like that is annoying as hell. the way the 3 movies show her makes me believe that she has always been this complicated person. not someone i would want to be with. i know a lot of people who crave this kind of bad energy, just to make their lives more exciting, even if it's by telling others how shit they are.

I think it's the consequence of not meeting again in Vienna when they should have in the 1990's and instead much later in Before Sunset, and Jesse sloppily cheating on his wife with Celine. Not to mention geographic and cultural differences catching up to them. I have seen happy marriages but even they will face intense arguments that can feel like this. What they had was magical but once reality comes in they have a lot of forces against them, not the least of which is Celine's very strong passions and ambition which was put on a shelf.

I disliked the trilogy overall but man did they completely destroy her character in this one after watching it. Why did they make her the embodiment of the hysterical, nonsensical female trope that every woman detests? She didn't consider his feelings once while he kept trying to make the night better. She was a complete nightmare and in reality he would have been exasperated with her to the point where he would eventually be done with their relationship. As a woman, I found her ridiculously unbearable and I can't believe she didn't even apologize after saying she didn't love him anymore; it cut him deep and you could see he was devastated by that towards the end. If I was a hardcore fan of these films, I would be bitter about this conclusion. Not only is it unentertaining but for a film that prides itself on showing the honest hardships of life, I felt it lacked a ton of realism and was not meaningful or profound in any way (writing-wise).
