I had quite a strange introduction to the trilogy. I first watched Before Midnight, which made me very attached to the characters. And then I wanted to see how they met. To witness that in Before Sunrise was very charming. Of course I had to see Before Sunset. That was even better. At this point I was so in love with Jesse and Celine that I rewatched Before Midnight the same night that I saw all of them for the first time. It is one of my favorite trilogies of all time.
I actually saw Sunset first, as I caught the movie on TV when they were on the boat, and then getting in the car. The car ride was so intense, and then the song she played for him at her apartment had me hooked. Found both Sunrise and Sunset on Netflix and then streamed Midnight all in one day. Wonderful movies, characters, writing, etc. - love it!
That's great! I just watched the trilogy in the "correct," chronological order, and I actually think it would be a more satisfying experience to watch it backward.
I watched the first one when it came out. This week scrolling through Primevideos I saw what I thought was the sequel but it was the last one. Didn't know it became a trilogy until this week.
I wouldn't say that. I think they stand on their own well. And it's always about their connection. That drives the movie. It's less about what actually happens. Together, the movies form patterns and deepen the connection much like years of a relationship would. All of them are incredibly complex.
Julie, no matter what, is beautiful. Imagine not aging, just existence , no experiences, no life, no love or heart ache or losses, wins, ups and downs. Our bodies are just vessels for here ,earth, our soul is for the next life. Live and have experiences, life, love, take chances but don't just let it all fall apart, control what you can , let go of the things you can not. She is beautiful, her body , mind and I'm sure her soul , no one would pass on waking up to her or women( men or both whatever you perfer) beautiful person like this.
I think it is utterly superficial to talk about how Julie has aged and how that is reflected on her appearance. She is an actress and a musician and she does her job well. She is not a model but she IS a beautiful woman, and it is only natural that she is aging and changing. That's actually what is common to all of us, so I think no one should judge her or anyone else as aging is what awaits us all.
I think the aging is actually one of the most important and wonderful components about the ‘Before’ series because we can relate to the stages in their lives and grow with the characters in real-time around every nine years. This could potentially be a special personal and historic film series if they can keep it up, by being natural and leading into the characters/actors twilight years.
@@spendingtimetogether8428 Ethan Hawke doesn't look the same way he did in the first movie. But somehow women should look 20 year old forever. We all age. It's just life!
@@destinychild4659 Yup, they both still look great. If anything, if being honest, I was a bit shocked to see Ethan's appearance in the 2nd film, he looked a bit ragged and I'm sure a part of it was due to the effects of his divorce.
With the number of interviews they've done for Before Midnight, it's a feat to create room for a conversation that is lighthearted, casual and extremely interesting. Thanks for this interview!
I love watching these two.. and Ethan in the previous video I just watch.. They are so approachable in their conversational comfort. Unlike so many in the industry who are so guarded when interviewed. Loved this!
A part of me wants to chat "Do number 4! Do number 4". But at the same time, the trilogy is perfect. Ugh. They could easily do another one about them in their 50's.....but do we need it? The answer is no....but also yes. XD
The commenter removed his/her comment on the interview... asking how bored these two must be talking about this movie for the last 10 months. But that is why the interview is so loose... really wanted to let them talk about what they wanted to talk about. But Julie and Ethan quite naturally talk about their chemistry, whether the camera is running or not. And Rick is always an interesting thinker.
it is almost time for the fourth edition of 'Before...'. We huge fans are waiting with bated breath.... BEFORE SUNRISE, a perfect prototype of communication at its best, is a staple in all my university English classes. I myself seem never have enough of the first edition. Each time, I fall in love with Celine and Jesse. Get the cameras rolling, Richard Linklater, Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke.Please. :)
The fight in the last film was indeed the "perfect fight" and I'm glad they spoke about it a little bit, but I wanted them to delve into it a little more. To me it was the most unreal part of the trilogy, not the way it was performed, but the unlikelihood of the dialogue turning out like that in real life. The retorts and exchanges were so well delivered and thought through, and I wonder if they have regrets about it, or at least some apprehension. Perhaps one justification could be that Jesse had such appropriate and eloquent responses in the fight because he is a writer after all, and can "script" in his head very quickly and successfully...
Yeah I felt that as well watching it, it’s as if she kinda lost control over her perspective of her own life instead of seeing both of them as a team? Again the fact that we’re thinking about this, intentionally or not is pretty amazing, open ended, interpretation, masterpiece
The ‘before’ films could potentially be a special, personal and lifelong historic film series if they can keep it up in real-time (every 9 or so years) well into the characters and actual actors twilight years. Everyone could relate, age and go through life stages with the story of these characters/actors. I imagine it would be both sorrowful and sweet that the last film would be called ‘after Sunset’ where one or both characters have passed because that is life (though hopefully not the actors at the time) and then reflections of all significant parts of all the other films prior happen beginning from the start when they first met both young and didn’t know what the future laid ahead of them.
Absolutely agree this wud have been so phenomenal and beautitful and made significant cinematic history. I dont thnk the time between films matter but Delpy's Feb 2021 insta post indicated they cudnt agree on story so no more films. But I say, never say never. Nothing stays the same even apparent decisions we lament.
French actresses dont resort to surgery and drastic diets as much as US ones. Think Isabelle Huppert, Nathalie Baye, Fanny Ardant..and you know what at least they keep their facial expressions intact..quite useful when you are in this profession :)
It's pretty sad to see comments about her physical appearance, that's exactly the kind of thinking that perpetuates women objectification. Any woman, no matter how she looks, is more than just a pretty or unattractive face. I love Julie for the kind of unapologetic woman she is. She doesn't care about looking pretty, she prefers spending her time doing things she loves, things that makes her life meaningful and rich.
I'm browsing comments as I listen. Just as I read your comment, Richard interrupted Julie. She made a brief attempt to regain the thread but he interrupted again, and she went silent.
The consensus seems to be that Julie Delpy has aged well. The comments on youtube are not all that representative of how the film community thinks. She is still seen as a very attractive woman, along with Juliette Binoche and other French actresses. Does she look as good as she did 20 years ago? No, but who does? Very few men or women look as good in their mid 40's as they did in their 20's.
+Andjela Tatarovic I truly think it's because audiences never really see actresses age as naturally as people like Julie. They hardly see their favorite actresses get that old because by the time they get to that age, the roles that are meant for said actresses are being played by 20-something year old starlets.
I found these movies the first two anyway, at my local library. I had never heard of them but I knew I liked the actors from other work. I love the movies the chemistry between them onscreen The only thing I didn’t like were the endings in the second and third movie. Maybe I am just too romantic, I am one of those people that loves Frank Capra movies. I don’t want too much reality in my movies... but like I say, I loved the interaction between the two of them and the beautiful thing about these movies is that they seem to have captured what it’s really like to have an instant attachment to someone… I just could have done without the mean fight... we’ve all been there especially anyone over 55 but do we really need to relive those nasty moments? I wish they had brought that back around to a little more sweetness between them... this trilogy is the most interesting i’ve seen in a long time! Love these characters
I love learning that Ethan wrote himself long monologues after seeing his interview where he came for Rick about how long the Before Sunrise monologues were 😂
The 2nd film is what led many to go for the 1st film, isn’t it ? And having seen the first 2 there there was a yearning to know what happened next but no screaming for it, no demand for it. So the years between the trilogy turned out to be the metaphorical time- space of people’s lives. The fourth one would be or can be “on Golden Pond” mark 2.
I actually love this particular interview because Ethan Hawke isn't here. 😅 Not because I don't like him or that he's a bad interview but in the other interviews he tends to dominate the conversation. And I always wanted to hear more of what Julie had to say about these movies.
I appreciate this channel a lot, however, here, more on the actual scenes, instead of how they react to success would have been better though its touched on sometimes. Great chance to dive into the fight scene, but instead we get a segue into a dull question regarding reaction to success. As a film maker myself it would be great to have more in depth discussion on the shooting of and thinking behind particular scenes

Did it make you feel better to put someone else’s physical appearance down? Its not a nice comment, you should delete it!
I really hope that they continue with the series, the Before films are by far my favorite movies
nah they should end it here
They should make new movies together
Same here, but I think they should stop at 3 movies. The 3rd movie took the trilogy full circle and I don't think there's anymore left to say.
