Fundamentally, Lost Ark still has things that you don't want in a good MMO. You can still tell in certain places that Lost Ark was originally planned completely differently and is now only defined by raiding. Starting with meta slavery, having to loot guardian souls, not enough group content besides raids and a few events, not enough solo opportunities for progression. In the end, the player's progress in Lost Ark slows down to such an extent that you only have one chance to progress in the game. The constant grinding of the same content week after week and the waiting for raids that you can hardly do as a normal player because of the difficult group dynamics. An MMO should be open to all types of players. Players should always be encouraged to bring new players into the game. Group activities always have to offer a lot of variety so that many players can have fun together. Hardly any of that really exists in Lost Ark. In a good MMO you progress with your character, which you can play both in a group and alone. The tasks that can only be solved in groups should only be side branches and not compulsory. The events, islands and guild activities should be designed for groups. Also special bosses or extra raids with higher difficulty. However, everything that is necessary to take your character to the next level of the story and make him stronger should be possible solo. This includes collecting new equipment, leveling it up and collecting other things that make the player strong enough to later get additional rewards with group content. Finally, that is at least my view and my interpretation of what a good MMO should be. Feel free to have other opinions :)
Lost Ark is really good and with a good playerbase. Numbers seems low because bots and rmt are gone and also the playerbase is divided .Korea -100k+, Russia, Japan, China) are all out of steam. Probably top 5 if you count all of them
LA dropped to 20k After SG and AG messed up the game/ events so much. Solo raid not coming out, t4 confusing system , ignite server catastrophe, etc It's a shame rly, since I rly enjoy LA's story and combat. (Some of the best I've seen in MMO)
Months and months of mostly unresolved DC issues to this day, no good raid content out at launch, players still getting fucked by the trusted status, at T4's launch the game didn't work, people forcing themselves to have 5 alts and burning out, localization is not the best, etc, etc. The game is good despite the p2w but the management of it is... not very good.
zoomin park drove the player base from 2million down to 5 digits. Good thing gigachad matt came to the rescue. western players will finally be understood by a western director
I've brought my wife and 2 kids into LoA during the ignite server event, they didn't play everyday but I coached them in solos and even brought them into some guild raids as mokokos. But weeks later, all 3 of them haven't 'earned' trusted status despite my adding crystalline aura subs, doing 2FA, etc. AGS customer service keeps cookie cutter responding to investigation and inquiries so unfortunately, all 3 are now dead accounts. It's very sad but it seems AGS/SG just doesn't know how to keep and service new players.
Lost Ark isn't so much an mmo as a it is an ARPG with forced group play elements. And this is why I think Poe2 is going to hurt Lost Ark even more than most people think. Unless LoAON is coming out with some massive strip down of all of its predatory monetization or time wasting elements its probably done in the west.

I think that the main issue of LOA is somewhere between the lines of it being only a raiding mmo and it pushing vertical with every raid release. It would benefit alot from more content variety, more laid back stuff etc. Thing is the current playerbase wants only raids, vertical & new classes. Bored whenever things get too easy, bored whenever a raid is far from releasing, bored cuz no new class etc. And the playerbase that would appreciate more variety wouldn't probably even try because of the stigma LOA has around it. Really feels like a doomed if you do, doomed if you don't scenario. Im personally really looking forward to the time after Brel v2. Mainly cuz we hopefully get to slow down as we caught up to KR. But who knows.. Maybe we get this break only after the raid after Brel comes out. With the p2w comments I see alot here. I personally don't feel like the game is p2w. Nor do I think its predatory... Maybe outside of the card system, that is a very obvious middle finger from devs to new players. But as a vet.. I really don't feel pressured to swipe. Sure, if I'd swipe I could have maybe had a full roster of 1680s with my main at 1700. But what would I grind for if I did that? 1x 1680 with 5x 1660 is plenty enough for me to enjoy the game as a f2p. (Maybe spent around 100€ in total over the 3 years, mostly on character slots.) Now also look.. All these old ass mmos have had their time to fail, their time for fuck ups, their lows and their highs. LOA is a pretty damn new MMO all things considered, im sure that with time it will only get more approachable, better and more appealing. It still likely won't be THE WOW KILLER size of an mmo. But honestly LOA rn is far more approachable than it was 1 year ago. And im hoping that this trend continues.

Lost Ark is a game that tries to create chemistry between people by force, not by mind. My little recommendation as someone who has been playing mmos for over 15 years. 3 months is to let the head programmer of Maple Story come here and change everything without stopping him. I promise the numbers will go up like crazy. Maple Story is a 20-year-old game that doesn't give up on itself and is always looking for ways to renew itself. New events every week, new skins almost every day, and content flows like water. That's why you're always busy playing. That's why it's so fun. And the best thing is that you also have servers without p2w that require time in exchange for progress. Summary: Changing programmers, management, and starting over is not a shame in admitting that they failed.
I'd love to say that Lost Ark is just not new player friendly, but the game is just not friendly to even it's existing players. It's just not player friendly. It's not just the hard raids/combat niche, it's also hardcore slavery niche. The events are not fixing anything, or helping anyone long term, they're just bandaids on a torn off limb. They may boost your character progression, but to someone who isn't already completely dedicated and putting in 50+ hours weekly the progression is still staggered immensely. Like look at the new express, idk if you even get half the mats required to push 1620, how is a new player supposed to actually hone that at a human pace? Or are we just gonna tell them that they should take their time while everyone is enjoying the new exciting things when they're MONTHS away from it? Tell them to just keep playing Akkan from 2023? And then obviously the cherry on top are the hostile systems that are not only there to make you want to hate your life, but are also way too expensive. I like playing it and am a jobless bum so I don't mind, but the game is objectively dogshit besides raids and the devs don't care cause Koreans love it, while the publisher is not competent enough to make any meaningful changes and also scared to try and tailor the game to the western audience.

You are surprised that GW2 is above LA, given that GW2 is a paid game. Considering LA a free game is a bit of an illusion. It is the most greedy game i have ever played. You cannot really progress if you dont somehow pay. Unless you are a veteran player with a couple of rosters full and geared and manage to farm EVERYTHING to gather gold, just to support one or two toons. GW2, as well as WoW are of the most honest and straight forward games. on GW2 you pay once, on WoW a 13 euro monthly sub, but you know that this is the only money you have to pay. ALL rest having to do with progress and gear is given in game. And every patch, every updated and higher raid, means that they will have a way to boost any character just a step before that. Paid are only cosmetics, mounts, companions, nevertheless nothing that really affects your gameplay and your numbers. So yes, they are worthy of their places. I love LA, one of the best games ever played, but I am too dissapointed every time with their decisions and their way of getting deep inside our pockets.

Honestly, I only play Lost Ark because it is free... If FF14 Reborn wasn't 13 dollars a month that's what I would be playing(that's a lot of money when it is not region-adjusted like Steam prices or LoL RP prices. Probably not a big deal if you live in the US). If you don't like Final Fantasy's combat you probably didn't like any other MMO's combat from 10-15 years ago, I think it is a very modern version of the classic hotbar combat that every MMO player loved back then. I especially like the global cooldown feature which adds a turn-based feeling to the game like in older Final Fantasy games. Edit: I wanted to add that FF14 objectively has better raids. Saying this as someone with a game design degree. Too many rules are broken in Lost Ark's raids which they try to solve by lowering the HP in every patch. There are other things you can do to make a raid challenging in a fun way than adding 5 instant wipe conditions to every raid you design, which I don't think most of them are well communicated to the player.
How are actually talking about BDO being way more popular in Asia and steam chart not being accurate but not saying the same thing for Lost Ark when Its also then same case for Korea or China. Lost ark is awesome but the dungeons, the gate keeping , the stupid wipe mechanics on solo mode is the crux of the game
