    I really admire what you’ve done with the conversion and the quality of the build etc behind it. My wife and I have taken a broad approach to education that isn’t just school based but involves life experiences and travel. We’re proud of how they’ve turned out. Our one regret is doing what you’re doing with a big road trip. I’m looking forward to your future travels and the experiences you have. Should be cracking. 👍

    Panhard rod, swivel bushes or caster corredcted radius arms are my guess regarding wheel wobble, may be worth rotating tyres as well.

    Your Landy is looking excellent..! I ship vehicles back and forth from North America to the UK. Consider shipping inside a consolidated container. Firstly, you can put anything in or on the Defender and it will be there when you pick her up in Canada, which is good! Secondly, my experiences with RoRo aren't good. As you said, nothing can be stored inside the vehicle, but there's nothing to stop your cupboards, draws and storage ares being broken into during the sail....and things being stolen. I've heard of gear knobs, radios, spare wheels etc. etc. being stolen, and of course there is nothing you can do about this. Inside a container is far better and very secure. I use a company in the UK called Kingstown Shipping (and they are the best, for either container of Roro) Mark or James...who are both great! Looking forward to the adventure!!!

    Hi, i don't know if you already set the swiffelbal preload but if not please do, it is (in my opinion) the only thing that does lead to the death wobble. all other worn parts like bushes make it worse but are not the main problem. i hope this will help you solve your problem. I am currently in the process of replacing the almost 40 year old chassis on my landrover 110 with poptop and will be back on (and off) the road soon, maybe we'll cross paths someday. love your video's

    Why dont you get a 270 awning with walls ? As you cant sit inside the camper, it would provide an outside extra room for when the weather is not merciful...

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  9 месяцев назад

      Don't like the bulkiness of a 270. We could add side walls on our arb awning but we don't see this as a necessity for the moment, especially because of the lack of storage space.

    A temporary import must be possible and people certainly import defenders to the US and Canada as well. There are any number of EU based You Tubers currently travelling the americas in similar vehicles so an Insurance solution must be possible ? ( In US uninsured drivers are a common issue )

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  11 месяцев назад

      it isn't possible to import as this Defender isn't old enough, so temporary import yes. Insurance yes possible but one that only cover others and not our vehicle, which is kind of crappy.
      If uninsured driver causes the accident, who pays for the repairs of our car ? I do think if you have full coverage, your insurance can help in this kind of case but if you have nothing, only liability, what happens ?

  • @F2zeP
    @F2zeP 11 месяцев назад

    if you haven't already done so, perhaps reach out to Nick and Mathilde (Next Meridian Expedition) or Phil (the Sunny side). They are travelling with their Defenders and have done North America. I think most temporary travellers have their insurance arranged back home and maybe supplement with a road service such as BCAA/AAA.

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  11 месяцев назад +1

      I have asked them :) swiss car insurance doesn't cover american continent and it seems the same for European insurance. We keep the minimum swiss insurance to keep the number plates to not have all the taxes that implies an importation. Even if we wanted to, we wouldn't be able to import our Defender in usa because it's too young.

      @@offtrackfamily ok, likely you want to go beyond the 90 days temporary import rules. The alternative may be that you do multiple 90 days temporary imports? as mentioned if you can get import sorted for Canada, then typically in terms of insurance that covers USA as well. My Canadian car insurance covers both Canada and USA.
      i brought my Defender from Asia to Canada. I am a non Canadian with a work permit, so i could do this under a temporary import, this avoids having to pay import tax/duties, but that means you have to take the car with you when you leave or pay tax if you want to sell it within Canada.
      Not sure how i can help, but if you have any questions in terms of the Canadian import process, please let me know.
      One thing that the authorities here can be very specific about, is to make sure that your car is clean and free from any foreign soil. If they find soil, they 'hire'a company for the cleaning and disposal of the soil and that can add up to several thousands of C$. I was ok, but apparently another car handled by the same shipper was charged something like C$7K......

    You could try contacting Defender-Adventures (I'm sure that's the name of the channel). A British couple who've taken their Defender camper conversion & toured North America or Roaming Reckless, an American woman who imported an exMOD Defender & is currently doing a 50 states road trip. If they reply, they may be able to give advice on insurance, etc.

      Depends on her age and if you want to « home school » on the road. I didn’t want to do that while on the road and we could wait for them to finish mandatory school because of all the time spent on the rebuild and now the organisation.

      What I understood is that if you homeschool in CH there's a test that the kid has to do in person every end of school year, meaning if you're traveling you need to come back for that. Also not talking about all the organisation that implies this special demand, get the school program (maybe need to pay it, I don't remember), best to be part of an association to have all the correct infos on time, etc. It seems different in Europe. On the personal side, would also depend on your relation with her and will she still be happy to travel with her parents then. It's very personal to every family, especially with older children.

    If you want the vehicle and the stuff inside your 4x4 vehicle to be insured, you’ll need to get a Class B RV insurance policy.The following companies provide Class B insurance that would provide coverage of your vehicle;
    Progressive RV Insurance
    Nationwide RV Insurance
    GEICO RV Insurance
    General RV Insurance
    Since yours is an older vehicle and highly customized the best policy for you probably would be an agreed valuation insurance policy. You will want to list everything and take photos of every angle of the vehicle inside & out and tell them what value you want, you can ask for any dollar amount you want the cost of your policy will be based on that dollar amount.

    This year I was with my family in Sardinia with a Defender 90. I was terribly afraid that my car would be taken away in Austria or Germany. I didn't go through Switzerland, because there are also idiot policemen there. Sardegna is ok, but Romania, Bosnia and the direction east are great. Western Europe is at an end and unfortunately they are dragging us with them. If I were you, I would go to Costa Rica and stay somewhere and never come back . This is my opinion.
