Probably one of the only VW owners that frequents your channel. The typical mods for MQB VWs doesn't require removing any emissions devices actually...if you can "make" a high flow cat work....you can make basically any setup imaginable work. With that said, I think I'm going to pull the trigger fairly soon on a few variations of tunes before they get canned for some EPA related nonsense. Appreciate the video though man. Prob just going to stick with pump 93 as well. 370/415 to the wheels for a DD should be enough haha.
Saw a post from Prime Motoring and their perspective is that Cobb basically did us a solid here, and I kind of agree. It's awful how they blindsided everyone, but if they don't make efforts to comply with the EPA, our hobby and industry would go by the wayside. Very curious to see what Cobb and other companies develop in the coming months and years to prolong our ability to have fun with our cars. Hopefully it's a case of short term hurt for long term gain!
like okay sure, it doesnt matter that they did us a favor, we all knew this was coming, and they didn't do us a favor at all, regardless of whether they did this or not, our community and the aftermarket for cars is going to be a target REGARDLESS of what they did. That being said, there are SO many better ways they could have gone about doing this. They knew they were about to lose a shit ton of a money canceling their most popular and best-selling products, and so they got as many off the shelves legally as they could before canceling them. They straight up stole from people, and they know it. Unless they do like they did in the old days with the V2/V3 APs. People can defend Cobb all they want, their customer service has always been top notch in the past, but this time, they dropped the ball. bad.

The fact they are spending millions in development for new parts in the platform shows you they are still dedicated to serving the after-market world. The thing is, modifying cars has been federally illegal for quite some time, it just wasn't strongly enforced. With that perspective, if the EPA is involved, they are throwing COBB and other tuning/aftermarket companies a bone by simply saying do what you want as long as you don't modify emission control software.

Thank you for giving such a informative answer to this issue with Cobb and the other ways we can get around are different tuning needs. Keep up the great work with your channel.
This is something that the Tree Huggers, EPA and the Gov have been wanting to do for years now. They really don’t like the car community at all. With EV’s being pushed harder every week, it looks like the car enthusiast hobby could be badly hamstrung going forward. It really sucks. Yes we still have work arounds for tuning, but for how long? Good video.
I just remember all of the SEMA Action Network mailers I would get with updates from all of the states that were trying to restrict what car guys could do to there cars, a lot of it was from California. The Fed level didn’t move as fast, but the OBD rules did help with better tuning and technology, so it wasn’t all bad but the older guys at the time knew the gov wouldn’t stop as the ever moving EPA Fuel Milage rules placed on car manufacturers is starting to hurt the performance car market. Sooner or later performance cars will all be limited runs and sold at a much higher price. Imagine paying a premium price for a Ford Fiesta or Subaru BRZ.
There are a few of the big automotive makers looking into alternate fuels that have the same carbon foot print as the process of making and driving an EV has. I know for a fact Dodge is doing hydrogen, and one of the EU companies is doing some kind of fancy gasoline (i want to say it was Porsche but i could be wrong).
Welp, I guess I got my flex fuel tune done on my AP before it was too late…but this news is still pretty upsetting for those who planned on going the same route. The rugs been ripped from right under us without warning☹️ The only upside I can really see to all of this for us Cali folks is that once everything is finally CARB legal, we won’t have any state ref BS to deal with if we stick with all the Cobb CARB certified parts. No more going back to stock for smog purposes either. Yes the waiting game sucks, but it might be worth it in the long run. Open source and stand alone is going to be the way to go in the mean time for some flex fuel action
Or.....LOBBY YOUR SHITTY STATE....they work for YOU! Not the other way around....if we want it a certain way we CAN make it that way. People need to stop giving up and giving in....fight back from this nonsense. And for you treehuggers....let's be real, do you even have ANY idea how much the cars we are talking about can possibly even pollute, compared to say, a private jet usage in a year? You should look because most of the pollution in the world isn't coming from cars that are tuned/ran in America....lots of other targets here that are and have been far worse for decades....and where's all this electricity going to come from to charge all these electric vehicles? Tell ya right now, most won't be wind/solar....
It really did bro, thank god VersaTune is still a thing. Gonna be switching to that for the future, CST4 catless, but I still want to upgrade intake manifold and EGR delete. Had problems with carbon buildup in the past and I don't want that to happen anymore.
Very informative for someone new to this platform🔥Do you think if i stop updating my accesstuner software and keep it on the same version from now on if it will avoid me from making a switch ?
Thanks for the break down. When comparing Cobb to apple and the tatrix cable to Windows, the better comparison would be tatrix to Linux. With WIndows you still have limits. WIth Linux, you can literally change everything you want to about the OS and it's open source.
Cobb needs to be out of our lexicon after this. We all need to move to alternatives that aren't owned by the same parent company. Cobb, you can't sell stuff you know people can't use. And you can't undo sales that were made years ago by forcefully changing people's shit.
In theory someone could just use a older version of the AP manager, tuner studio, and the AP firmware. It's hard to retroactively add features like forced updates unless they already exist.

Open source tuning can be an alternative for many, but problem is- if tuners are getting the same pressure and heat from the EPA that Cobb and the rest of the industry is getting, will many tuners actually be willing to offer open source tuning? I called a shop local to me today and they stated they would not be open source tuning, just sticking with Cobb.
Anyone else remember the TGV delete kits from APS back from like 02-03? They kept the the TGV motors and sensors and just moved them to a bracket to the ECU thinks they are still in the intake but they are actually tucked up under the manifold... guess I need to get busy building some brackets lol
Damn, my catless, TGV deleted, secondary air pump deleted, speed density STI needs a new turbo. Guess my car is a paper weight to now. Thanks COBB. We need companies like this to fight the EPA, Cobb you are a bunch of spineless cowards.
How is COBB going to fight the federal government. What you mean is, you'd like COBB to go out of business. COBB is a small company in the grand scheme, they comply or die... End of story...many other tuning companies already have
Did you not watch the video? Guy literally just spent 15 minutes explaining how you’re not fucked. Tuning Subaru’s was not invented by Cobb. It has existed far before them and will continue to exist long after they’re gone.
Go fight the government. You will learn real quick it's poking the dragon and hoping it doesn't eat you. The real problem is the insane "global warming/cooling/climate change agenda." That is where all this started. Ignorant people making policies that effect everyone.
Just Crack an older version of the software. Tune it yourself. Learn. Companies won't fight the epa....maybe in a very limited fashion is all. They're in business to make money, not change laws. That's our job to lobby our state and federal to tell them hell with this...MOST PEOPLE DONT WANT IT!
Thank you for reminding me there will always be people tuning Subaru after Cobb. About to finally rebuild my 04 STi and had some serious concerns about my performance options
My secondary air pump has been dead since the car hit 60k 😂🤣. I hit 155k and not looking back. Open source is back on the table. I have been thinking I can put the pump, pipes and valves with an orifice that makes it thinks is working🤔. Same with the tgv, cut the housing and leave the last bit dangling on the back of the block 🤔. They will move and have feedback. Back to the piggy back ECM days of turboxs computers.
I made my own secondary air pump delete kit and I had to dissect the sensor out from it and keep it plugged in and I didn't get a CEL. There are ways to do it!
This was much needed to calm the wind on this situation. I know a lot of things are in limbo and it's good to know there are more option out there for the ones in the middle of a build. Or who are waiting to put purchases from over winter on like myself. The more realistic option might be open source. Would love to see a more detailed video on what all you need and how to go about it with an e-tune.
So why does Cobb have to make these changes for consumers outside of the USA? I'm Canadian and can't go speed density with my accessport because California has too much smog? Whack.

Time to go stand alone and save up extra cash to just go full blown build because any other work seems like “the juice isn’t worth the squeeze” like just adding a flex kit.
"All this affects is your ability to delete O2, EGT, TGV, EGR, catalytic converters, secondary air pumps, and you cant run flex fuel" So pretty much everything someone would want to get into light mods to get an extra 150whp on their slowbaru. "You can still make 500hp on an accessport" like someone aiming for 500hp isn't putting down the money for a standalone ecu. Cobb did their customer base dirty with this and showed how weak they are. Instead of fighting like all of the small tuners and helping the cause, they just said "Govern us more Daddy!" And they didn't even leave an option to not update the software, like they could have just done that and no one would have been mad, but no, they deleted half of their functionality. I'm glad I got out of the Subaru game when I did cuz their new cars are trash and the aftermarket support just went to shit. Forced update/planned obsolete garbage. I don't get how y'all aren't heated. I don't even have a Subaru or an accessport anymore and I'm fuming. I'm wishing you all luck in finding another reasonable tuning solution.

so hopefully cobb will have a tune for the new wrx to me i enjoy just buying a downpipe intake coils wheels and getting a ots tune i enjoy how easy it is
I don’t wanna say that the entire flex fuel kit from cobb or any other manufacturer is useless at the moment. It still has fuel lines, it still has a mount, it still has a GM ethanol sensor. Can actually get a standalone gauge to monitor your ethanol content, plug it into the ethanol sensor and use that to tune for your duel map, and to be sure that it is indeed the correct mixture of fuel before switching your maps. Just my two cents on the matter. As for cobb issuing a refund I highly doubt that they will do that but I think when they develop the new wiring harness they should honor either a trade back of the old wiring harness or something along those lines
IMO your better off returning it and piecing together a kit for less than half the price. (But that also depends on if people have them in box still or installed) Surprisingly enough they have been refunding people if the sensor was purchased in the last 12 months 🔥

FA here. I saw this day coming way back. That's why I never did EGR and TGV deletes. I didn't expect Cobb doing what they did, but this day was coming.
Was coming at some point 🙃
Most tuners I talked to in my area dropped COBB completely, since they just lost a big portion of there money. They should of gave a 90 day grace period for tuners.
Man glad I got my tune already. No tgvs, no cat, and a bigger turbo so I doubt I could fit the tgv back in. Thanks for the info!
Thanks Tanner for keeping us informed, calm and ready to move forward!
Well unfortunately I canceled my ams intake manifold order and am going to get the process west. Then wait for IAG to bring out the new tgv housings and cobb to bring back the flex sensor... and if that doesn't pan out then might have to go full race car on the epa's ass!!! Lol thanks for everything you do in our community my guy you are awesome 👌
Sigh, we have an AMS here we can't use now 😅
This is why I went catless on my G37 with ECUTEK this past year. I knew this day would come for Cobb, and I know others will follow suit shortly 😔.

Thanks for the video, I've been doing so much research on how to open source tune and was around the accessport. It be awesome if you could make some content on how to get a ROM file and the process of open source tuning.
Going to try and make this happen when we tune our LGT
from what I've heard from tuners, atleast for the mazdaspeed platform is that tunes are in no way affected, we'll just have a CEL if we delete emission stuff or get catless downpipes. Also that they might be forced to comply to the emissions stuff as well meaning no matter what tuning software they are using, theyre gonna have to comply to not delete emissions sensors and readiness criteria
So if we are running a catless DP we can’t clear the code at all?
Thanks dog!! Let the '13 build continue!!!
I just plopped the new grimmspeed Overtake bb500 in my VA sti. I have all my emissions stuff intact and it fit wonderfully. Tuning later this week so no idea on numbers yet. If anyone is looking for a good stock location turbo that fits with tgvs, I think this will be the new big thing. My two cents anyways, also great video sir! Thank you!
I'm wondering if the BCP x500(+) is in the same ballpark as far as fitment.
I want the Grimmspeed turbo too though. Oh well....the days of enormous 3in+ mouth stock location turbos are behind us
I have the BB500 and its great, made 523whp and 510tq on my setup. I am thankful I already have done my tune and won't be connecting my ap to a computer ever again lol. Problem is I am hearing that even if you have all your emissions stuff as soon as you up the boost it will throw an overboost CEL so I don't know if it will even work.
@@subiewrx4668 those are great numbers. This update is a buzz kill for real. The boost isn't a delete feature I did read also.
@@subiewrx4668 would you mind sharing your build info? Factory or built block? Front mount? I got a bit lower than expected today but I'm still happy.

Really crazy these are the times were living in honestly.
Appreciate the video though man. I was considering Cobb for the VW, and as you've said....seemingly would have no issues making it work, but I've been thinking about going a different route entirely and this may have sealed the deal. Prob just going to stick with pump 93 as well. 370/415 to the wheels for a DD should be enough haha.
In the middle of my build and I have been waiting for this thank you!!🔥🔥
Hopefully this helps 🙏🙏🙏
Bro thanks for consolidating all the information for us common plebs. Really appreciate it!
Prime is a your last resort they are scammers and should get shut down.
like okay sure, it doesnt matter that they did us a favor, we all knew this was coming, and they didn't do us a favor at all, regardless of whether they did this or not, our community and the aftermarket for cars is going to be a target REGARDLESS of what they did. People can defend Cobb all they want, their customer service has always been top notch in the past, but this time, they dropped the ball. bad.
You think they did us a favor by suckling up to daddy government who has zero interest in letting us continue progressing our hobby they've arbitrarily decided is illegal? Take a good long look at the position you're taking here....
Fug the EPA. As soon as they ban private jet use I'll be interested in what they think, until then....0 fugs. Everyone knows it's a pay to play deal....let's not act like they care about the environment here
@Billy Purdy suckling up to daddy government? how stupid can you be? You clearly don't understand that fines are a thing. THE COMPANY WOULDN't EXIST with the fines they would have accumulated, plus the ones they have already been hit with, IF THEY DIDNT DO THIS. WE'RE all LUCKY THEY DIDNT JUST PACK UP SHOP AND CALL IT QUITS IN THE FIRST place with all the money they have soaked up. The fact they are spending millions in development for new parts in the platform shows you they are still dedicated to serving the after-market world. In order for them to develop and market those parts, they have to stay in fucking business, or else we don't have a fucking option to buy anything, please use your brain
Gotta give you a HUGE thanks for this video, Good information too us UK guy's. We been tuning 100 years plus without fance Pre play devices Tanna, you should talk with some UK car owners and tuners. Great video and respect too you. 🇬🇧💯📹✊✊
Another thing to think about is a wideband. You now can’t use the rear O2 signal to power the wideband sensor.
Yuuuuup, no emmisions modifying at all, for big power cars Accesstuner is no longer an option
Can't u just weld a new bung in, and run your own power lead to it?... pretty much going back to the late 90's, early 2000's when you had to add a whole sweat of sensors and hardware to a piggyback ecu...
@@blaqkhavok4863 True. But then you lose to ability to monitor your wideband through the ecu. Cobb no longer allows you to have the ability to manipulate the rear 02 voltage points.
HP Tuners has support for WRX and STI EJ engines. This does include a speed density option. There are videos of Tuners using this software a couple years ago. Just another option.
Good info. I’ve been trying to find the reasons why cobb did what they did and you explained a lot of unanswered questions I had

its all because of the EPA.... the one thats run by liberal democratic nutjob hacks. you think they actually care about the environment?!? wrong they use it as a front to back door funds to donor shell companies for personal gain. This is making me scared man, I feel like other ecu devices are going to follow suit soon. I just got my KTuner too, hopefully they don’t go this route
Hopefully they don't 😖
They already have. Look at sct. Look at the ngauge. Yes there are others as well.
Good information. I'm checking out the cable + laptop alternative as i watch this video. Thanks.
What I worry about is now that the government/EPA has successfully accomplished this. Where and when will they stop. I’m afraid of the slippery slope that this could go down. I could rant about private jets, ships, power demands for EV charging etc etc. Im going to stop at just leave it alone don’t check us if your not going to check yourselves first.
The damn EPA will smash us all anyway eventually. I just started tuning my 21 wrx. Probably gonna start buying parts and stock them in storage lol. You give the government a mile, they’ll take a 1000.
The thing is, modifying cars has been federally illegal for quite some time, it just wasn't strongly enforced. With that perspective, if the EPA is involved, they are throwing COBB and other tuning/aftermarket companies a bone by simply saying do what you want as long as you don't modify emission control software.
Imo They won’t stop until they get every single person to EVs

Thank you for giving such a informative answer to this issue with Cobb and the other ways we can get around are different tuning needs. Keep up the great work with your channel.
This is something that the Tree Huggers, EPA and the Gov have been wanting to do for years now. They really don’t like the car community at all. With EV’s being pushed harder every week, it looks like the car enthusiast hobby could be badly hamstrung going forward. It really sucks. Yes we still have work arounds for tuning, but for how long? Good video.
I have a meme i wish I could post 😅

The rugs been ripped from right under us without warning☹️
The only upside I can really see to all of this for us Cali folks is that once everything is finally CARB legal, we won’t have any state ref BS to deal with if we stick with all the Cobb CARB certified parts. No more going back to stock for smog purposes either. Yes the waiting game sucks, but it might be worth it in the long run. Open source and stand alone is going to be the way to go in the mean time for some flex fuel action
Have a feeling Cobb will continue to price hike their parts once they're all certified though 🙃
Yea but there is 49 other states, I don't know why cali has to ruin the fun for everyone 😭
@@masonboone7910 as per standard, california is a dogshit state, they do nothing for no one, and they ruin everything for everyone

This, hopefully a company comes out that can compete well
In theory someone could just use a older version of the AP manager, tuner studio, and the AP firmware.

Because open source support is awful
Why not just get the same turbo again? No retune required

The biggest issue I've seen is there doesn't seem to be any open source things happening on the longest running generation.
The VA...
Give it a few months and it'll start to happen. Now there's a demand for it
Thank you for reminding me there will always be people tuning Subaru after Cobb.
That's an idea we were playing with last night 😅
I made my own secondary air pump delete kit and I had to dissect the sensor out from it and keep it plugged in and I didn't get a CEL. There are ways to do it!
Just plug the tgv motors into the harness....if they can rotate just the valve motor spindle shouldn't throw codes....least on older ones
Whack.
Blanket update, as they quoted "to level the playing feild" they don't want us customers getting tunes from people outside the states

I'm wishing you all luck in finding another reasonable tuning solution.

super helpful. time to commit and build a race car!
(But that also depends on if people have them in box still or installed)
Surprisingly enough they have been refunding people if the sensor was purchased in the last 12 months 🔥
