Woar, that was devastating. He pushed into the town without giving you any chance.
But the video was very well done.
Thanks, yep like a sheriff he run me right out of town!
In such an initial situation, one option is to use a kind of reverse-slope defense. That is, place your infantry in the front line of buildings, keep them on hide and use a short fire arc of about 50m. When enemy inf crosses that line, shoot them up for 1 minute at close range then displace all to a second line of buildings behind the first. Enemy inf has a minimal opportunity to shoot back after the initial burst and enemy armor will not typically be able to bring effective fire down in such a short time-frame. By then displacing the enemy inf is forced to move to very close range and enemy armor is more or less neutralized until the move in very closely, thus exposing them to bazookas, panzerfausts etc.
Lee I think your advice is very sound and much appreciated. I think if I had followed this format I would have fared better. Its actually quite a challenge to form a defence from scratch, I tried to base this one around the AT guns but none of them really had enough clout to damage the tanks and so was doomed from the start. Besides they were mostly all spotted before they could be used, which was wholly my own fault as I had chosen an assault as opposed to an attack game allowing my opponent pre game intelligence on some of my positions.
Being more infantry focused using fire and displacement together with a mobile AT element and a tactically improved placement of the mines would be the way to go in future. This was exactly what I had tried to do in a later game where I was again the defender, unfortunately the game never concluded as my opponent disappeared.
I concur with the reverse slope defense, but I think overwatching armor would still have ample opportunity to cause severe casualties after the “open fire” order is given. Josey’s excellent terrain analysis showed that the German approach could be well covered by overwatching armor staying well back out of effective anti-tank range. Consequently, I would avoid setting up in any position that could be seen from the eastern hills. Instead, set up the first line of defense to fire on those “front line” positions AFTER German infantry had occupied them. The German armor would therefore be out of the fight until they, too, entered the village proper.
In the future, always consider some sort of mobile reserve. Two or three tank detroyers committed from the flank would have taken the initiative away from the attacker.
I couldn't agree with you more. In hindsight the choice not to have a mobile reserve was a mistake. However it was also a deliberate decision. Prior to this battle I had been reading a lot about antitank gun doctrine. I attempted to build my defence upon my limited understanding and interpretation of this. From this game and other games I have played since I have found that an antitank gun defence works best with armoured support. Antitank guns are my favourite CM unit and I am always experimenting with their use. You will see in some of my other games that I have employed them with greater effect.
The GI that got a HE shell to the face. RIP. Great video btw.
Thats gotta hurt!. Thanks!
That was a damn fine AAR!
I've had the pleasure of playing against Will S myself, quite the opponent. I won, but in no small part due to luck and the fragility of Belgian housing... In fact, I found myself in a situation quite similar to yours, my infantry was breaking and my support weapons suffering from attrition (minus the tanks, this was a small map) and I was saved by a chain of timely building collapses and a pair of Greyhounds (this is where the luck comes in, they avoided death by panzershrek many times).
About the battle settings, I think that, as you said, Assault was overkill for the battle size and the map. I'm of the opinion that it's more suited towards fortress-city type maps.
About the minefield, it's a shame the game does not let you paint an area and decide the mine-density, the 8x8m area we otherwise have to work with is quite limiting.
Glad you enjoyed it, Will S seems very competent. I got caught out on the battle settings this time around but its a valuable lesson learned.
Going to have a rethink on my mine laying tactics for my next defensive battle, need to be a bit more strategic in their deployment.
Great AAR Josey, as always. That was very entertaining and interesting, and after playing this game for years I can say that I'm still learning new things all the time, too. Thanks for your efforts.
Thanks, this game just keeps on revealing!
Very good AAR. We have not a lot h2h AARs. Please play more h2h battles and share on RUclips.
Glad you like, will do, already got another CMFB H2H underway!
Beautifully edited and played.
Thanks Michael, a new one is coming out today!
Great, I will def check it out.
A great watch as usual. And a very fair assessment of your defeat.
Thanks, probably the most one sided battle I've played yet.
Well, thank you for the spoiler...
Rule number 1: You do not talk about fight club.
Rule number 2: Read the comments after watching the vid.
Josey Wales well shit, lol. Nothin better to do while i wait for the video to stop buffering!
Commencing breakage of rule 2
Love how the game gives tanks dents when Anti-Armor rounds bounce off it.
The hit decals came as part of the version 3.0 upgrade, I can't imagine the game without it. I love the noise of shells ricocheting off metal hulls, seems pretty realistic to me.
Can't wait for the next one!
Thanks man!
Top notch. Thanks much.
Great AAR as always. Subscribed to you not too long ago but went through and watched most of your AAR's. Love Combat Mission. Been playing them for about a year now. (Yes, been late to the party and probably one of the few of my generation that plays it). Mostly play singleplayer. Currently finishing up Conrath's Counterattack in CMFI.
Only multiplayer battles I've played have been with a friend a few months ago. This was valuable insight for me as well if I ever decide to play with some of you guys.
Always looking forward for the next one. Good work.
Welcome and thanks, CM is a great game. If you ever want to play H2H you'll find a friendly bunch over at the Few Good Men. Good luck with Conraths Counterattack.
Damn, that was a slaughter.
Yep, probably not unlike what happened all along the Ardennes front during the opening hours of the battle of the Bulge.
Actually quite unlike it. The initial assaults were poorly planned and mostly carried out by Volksgrenadier Divisions, often without armor support. In many ways the offensive was a WW1 type affair: Strong artillery preparation followed by a wave of infantry.
Often the Germans stumbled into hidden US positions in the dense forests and were mowed down. Only through numbers and by infiltration were any gains made at first.
Interesting, I've never read about the BoB just seen whats been popularized in documentaries and films/tv series which seem to push the initial success idea of overrunning the Allies.
I've read somewhere that 2/3rds of the force assembled for the offensive was volkgrenadiers and old men put into waffen ss divisions.
Very nice. Just working my way through your videos in chronological order... :) Thanks.
Excellent execution.
Thanks but I think its WillS who deserves the praise for this battle.
Tried downloading the demo for Combat Mission Afghanistan and Shock Force and it says "Unable to execute. CreateProcess failed Code 2. System cannot find file specified" then exits me out of the game. Please help!
