- Welcome to Season 5, Single Fins and Bonzers. In this episode I review a brand new board by Sawyer Surfboards, the Sawyer Stinger. World Longboard Champ, Steven Sawyer and his dad created a tribute to Ben Aipa, I think they did him justice. This board was a work of art and it went really well.
I thought it was pretty special that a Jbay legend surfboard family made a board in tribute to the father of an Hawaiian Surf legacy family.
My Stats: 5’11” and 112kg

You surfed it really really well. Plus I could tell the shape was going to work . Single fins no resistance =faster.I wonder how Cheyne Horan's star fin would go ? They did a great job on the shape .Colors are amazing .I still make stingers .Ever make it to California ,Ill make you one of my step bottom 6 channe version of the stinger .
Lastly Phil Meyers in OZ makes channel bottom singles . They replace thrusters for his riders .Guys launching airs all progressive turns .
Ya it went amazing. Would love to try more singles. If we can get the board to SA I would love that. Thanks for the great comments and support:
The trim, speed and flow you exhibit on this beauty captures the true essence of surfing. That gets lost these days. Stunning backdrop and perfect music selection.
Thank you! Completely enjoyed this.
Wow Tony, thanks for the great feedback.
Des made me a board ready for my arrival in J Bay on a trip in around 2014. To have a shaper deliver a board when they say they will alone is quite special but the board was also perfect. He knows what he's doing. Such a great guy and an incredible shaper.
Love stings.
I made a 10’2 pin version.
Watching this vid made me wanna shape a smaller version for myself.
Surfed a 8’ one as a kid in Tahiti. It went really well. Tube rode well too.
Wow would love to see the big pin. They really go well as smaller boards and can handle some juice.

Well, I have photos of it.
I ended up reshaping it into a 9’ version. Moved the wings further back and left it super thick. I ended up making the rails softer due to moving the wings aft so far.
The resulting board was slower and looser.
I ride that for a while and realized I liked the old design better as the old one was longer and faster.
Had I hardened the rails, and kept the sting further forward I would’ve been happier even at 9’.
One day I walked into a Surfshop and saw a beautiful 10’6 glider I wanted, so I traded the 9’.
I’ve ridden the newer 10’6 near a year now. Tried multiple fin set ups, installed FCS plugs and tried even more fin set ups. Still not quite right.
I miss the sting board with hard rails aft of the sting.
If I could go back in time I would have run a tucked edge to near the nose on the old 10’2 for even more speed, but I had visions of trying to fit my board into my truck bed for a drive to Mexico.
The original 10’2 was a generic soft rail glider round pin I had shaped with soft rails, which I hated. That was the reason for putting sting in to the rails in the first place. The hard rails and pivot point moved up added a lot of speed and allowed the board to turn from further forward.
Somehow I had forgotten I hated soft rails through all these changes. It’s like having a parking brake on while driving. Kills the performance outside of small pivot turns.
The old 10’2 I ran with a D fin.
Went pretty good.
It was olive green on the bottom with a black deck with olive cross stripes.
Wicked board it was. I have photos.
The current 10’6 is clear pin tail and currently riding as an FCS thruster.
I found the thruster fin set up makes it feel like a giant short board. I can even do round house cutbacks on bigger waves.
It’s interesting.
I would have loved trying that fin set up on the old stinger 10’2.
Eventually I’ll do another stinger board and be sure to add some FCS plugs for experiments. They make as big a difference as the stinger does in how it feels.
I know a fin set up like that is sacrilege, but I love to experiment.
Sometimes it pays off well, other times it’s a dud. That’s how we learn.
Never did make it to Mexico.
One day.
"Let me tell you, work, it does"
