They said they hadn't planned to get this emotional, but during filming the meaning just hit them and it came naturally. It's impossible not to cry when all of them are tearing up. I'll date myself here and tell you I remember when Cyndi came out with this and it was the finale for one of our school-wide talent shows with the whole audience joining in singing with us. Yeah, lots of tears. Everyone should let their true colors shine with fear or hesitation. Your colors, sir, have always shone so brightly that they've chased away any shadows I had before watching your reactions. Thanks for the laughter, tears, and love you always bring to all of us.

The ascending/descending melody at the end never ever fails to give me chills. The whole thing is so beautiful and melancholy.

This is definitely one of my favorites by them. It's absolutely stunning.
Another one of theirs that's underrepresented is The Heart of Life. It is melancholy, no beatboxing, and the first song they did as a group after Earl left. It's a Geoff arrangement and heartwrenching. He also said this was one of the only times he did an arrangement that was a slower tempo than the original; they usually up the tempo on their arrangements. It also means a lot to me personally in that it speaks to me on the levels of the message of the song, the beautiful arrangement, and the pure, raw emotion that comes across, dealing with my own personal loss. It is another one that is so beautiful, and while being sad, also has such hope behind it. You should check it out but be prepared to be emotionally wrecked.

Layne said the lyrics to the song were touching and usually you can feel the song before singing it, but when you actually sing it it really feels more powerful and invited us all to sing with it. So, go back, sing along and see if it has a more powerful affect on you. 💖

True Colors is one that can rip your heart out. Know that there are a whole bunch of us that needed to hear this even though it hurts - I can't remember the last time I heard you laughing. But think of the beauty like a rainbow, if you have a cat hug her or him, right now one of my cats has her little arms wrapped around my neck and nuzzling my cheeks. I love what VoicePlay did to this song, and it's definitely one of my favorites from them - yes it's emotional, but sometimes you just need to feel the relief of the tears to let yourself know that everything is going to be okay.
Of course it makes you cry -- it made them cry. Whatever you do, don't listen to this and Geoff's cover of High and Dry back to back!

Around the end of last year, they had a gig and had Ashley Diane perform with them. We got to hear them do a live rehearsal of this with that lineup, Geoff was like, "Wow, it's been so long since we actually were singing together live in the same room!" I know they do wonders with having everyone record their parts separately and have Layne or Geoff readjust them in the preliminary mix, but I think there is something just special that happens when you are actually performing with someone. That's also the reason I do so admire Streisand for wanting to record with an orchestra (and, admittedly, she is one of the few whose fame and experience can justify the extra cost), there is just something extraordinary that comes from making music together and responding to each other while you do it.

This is one I always suggest for pure harmony. This one and Can't Help Falling in Love. Equally beautiful but not sad. Layne sings, no beatbox. They're just beautiful. a good message for me right now. I just found out that some unmentionable in Second Life has taken thousands out of my account. (not that much in real money but it still hurts.) Feeling very down right now. If you want a real sob song, one that always makes me cry is Vincent, by Don McLean.

Have you ever heard Justin Hayward’s cover? If you don’t know Justin’s name: he’s the lead singer of the Moody Blues and the voice you hear on Nights in White Satin.
He, like Layne, has a wistful quality to his voice that makes it ideal on sadder songs.

This is one of my absolute favourites from VoicePlay. It has all the sights and sounds and feels and it knocks me over every time. As hard as this hit you, I have to think how hard it would have been to edit this with all of the feels going on. I’m glad that you reacted to this. How is it that I've had this version of the song in my head all day, I finally come on to listen, and your reaction is the very first thing on my feed. Talk about perfect timing.
Sad personal note: This song was one of my mother's favorites. We lost her to a sudden heart attack this summer. Music is healing, so I made a Spotify playlist of all of her favorite songs, and this one is the very first. I listen to it every time my soul feels the emptiness of her absence. It helps to listen to the songs she loved and recall hearing her humming in the kitchen or long cross-country drives listening to mixed tapes she and my dad would make, all of us singing loudly with my mom and sister severely out of tune. (Bless them, but those two didn't inherit the music gene!)
This is definitely VoicePlay's saddest song, but also one of their most beautiful due to the emotions they poured into this. It's not a song you can listen to on a whim. It's a song you listen to with a glass of wine, a photograph of someone dear, and a box of tissues nearby.😢
No insane percussion, no mind-melting lows. Just pure, heart-melting harmonies and a masterclass in music theory. VoicePlay has this, and Home Free has Helplessly Hoping.

I always wondered if this was one of the first songs they recorded once Earl started the conversation about leaving. It would track with the emotions in their voices and faces. I know the first one they did without him still always destroys me.

This song tells you that someone loves you so much that it hurts them to see you sad. Your true colors are beautiful! I only saw their eyes this sad on their cover of The Heart of Life, which was after Earl left the group. My heart felt so small and tight that the tears flowed before they even started to sing.😢🤧💚💗💙💜💛

I hope that the more avid Voice play fans will correct me if I am wrong but I believe that this cover of True Colors was released when their friend and former collaborator from the 4 to 5 days passed away. They later paid homage to him with the Halo cover bringing back Scott Porter.
