Welcome back you two! Here's a little bit about Feuerzangenbowle: There is no cherry in a Feuerzangenbowle. The base is red wine, orange juice, clove, staranis, slices of orange and lemon (basically Glühwein).heat it all up, on top (on a steel-tongue) is a sugar cone. The cone is drenched in rum (at least 50% alc. because that's the concentration where it is easily flammable without heating it up first). It's a nice social event to makle it at home. But ther are two downsides to it: 1. A design for bad decisions. It's a high alcohol concentration and both the sugar and the temperature excellerates the intoxication. 2. Be prepared for the worse headache of your life the next morning! Again, that's because of the sugar. To illustrate what I'm saying, I recommend the 1944 movie "Die Feuerzangenbowle" Plot: a couple of academics meet for Feuerzangenbowle and share stories about the pranks they pulled when they were in school. The main character went to a private school and never experienced any of this so it is decided that he poses as a student and goes back to school. (talking about bad decisions). It's quite a cheesy movie, but amusing nevertheless.
Here in the US different people have different preferences as to which alcohol they like in their Eggnog. That is a main reason stores sell unadulterated Eggnog, and you add your own booze. Also, most stores can't sell alcohol (special licensing) so can't sell adulterated Eggnog.
In the USA and Canada you get the eggnog base in the dairy section and add alcohol and spices at home. Every family is proud of their own recipe. Hot or cold chocolate needs to be with milk only. Ikea in Canada sells Glögg (# 9).
In the US, we get the eggnog cold but mix it with rum and heat it up, usually served in a punch bowl at Christmas parties, Kids can just drink the eggnog right out of the fridge, before any added rum. I have made mead a few times and once poured half a mug of it and half a mug of apple cider, nuke it then mix with a cinnamon stick.
The Eggnog in the US is sold without alcohol but you are supposed to add rum or brandy to it. I’ve never drunk it straight nor have we ever given it to children. I see it in half gallons, but I’ve never seen a gallon. But we like the super rich kind from a local dairy chain that I don’t think is available outside my area (Oberweis in the Chicago area) and it’s sold in half gallons.
Not in Florida. It's sold both ways in Florida. Of course you have to go to a liquor store to get spiked eggnog. Its spiked with rum, brandy, or whiskey. I always go with rum eggnog.
Grog is a seafarer's drink and also popular in Scandinavia. Originally it is watered down rum with sugar, hot.My father used to say: Rum must, maybe sugar, water not necessary. We like it with Elderberryjuice. Elderberry is high in Vitamin C, my family swears by it to ward off colds.
Glühwein you drink at the Christmas market. But Feuerzangenbowle, that one you have to make yourself to get a proper taste. The small cups, they are a really poor substitute. It messes up the measures a little bit. Plus, sharing the Feuerzangenbowle is part of the experience.
Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit und Frölicher Weinachten aus Dänemark! Glögg is swedish by the way. To get the authentic experience with this drink, you must add almond splits, rasins and a pinch of fresh orange juice to the pot and let it slowly heat up for several hours on the stove before serving it with a bit of added snaps and a long spoon for the “granola” in the bottom of the glass. And yes mead (Mjød) is a divine beverage!
I’m from Göttingen and you were in Göttingen!!! Very cool. I hope you enjoy this Christmas market. Not so big as Hannover but a nice one. Then you have see the Gänseliesel the most kissed girl in the world. 😃
Great videos :) Im from Germany but I live in the moment for one year as a volunteer in Ecuador. And I really miss the Christmastime in Germany. Your videos about it are heating up my heart 😘😍 thanks fot that :) Frohe Weihnachten Max
That's what Grog is, is watered down Rum. Since Rum has been made and man have been sailing the seas of the world up till the 1900's, Grog was a big drink on the sailing ships. They watered it down 1) because water back then was bad to drink and the alcohol killed bacteria in the water, and 2) it stretched it out and made it last longer. Also that's where we get the saying " feeling grogy".
Be careful if you see a red Punsch with alcohol inside. Because in a Punsch you are allowed to add up to 25% of water to make the drink cheaper. So only drink Glühwein, because there must be 100% wine in it (okay plus cinnamon etc.)
The one drink that gives me the fuzziest feeling in winter is simply hot chocolate with whipped cream. Reminds me of childhood: Coming home from sledding, freezing, getting a bath, cuddled in a bathrobe on the sofa and having a hot chocolate.
I grew up in a family w/ near total German ancestry in Wisconsin. We drank our eggnog warm w/ bourbon or brandy, not rum, although all the prepackaged instructions say rum. We made mulled wine rather than buying gluhwein, cuz like u said, gluhwein can b 2 sweet sometimes. N of course, warm spiced apple cider. Made w/ non-alcoholic cider, adults r welcome 2 add schnapps or bourbon or rum... Merry Christmas! 🎄
Glögg is literally one of the few things I miss after moving from Sweden to Germany. There are so many kinds though, and you probably didn't have the best. I think the one you get at ikea is pretty decent. 😉 And traditionally you should put almonds and raisins in it, to make a kind of spicy Glühweinmüsli. For getting drunk, Glühwein is better, since it doesn't taste that much.
Met translates to mead. You can easily make really good hot chocolate yourself: start with half a liter of milk, warming it slowly in a small pot while rasping 100g Blockschokolade into it, then stir well.
Also you two have to try „wöltingeröder“ shots, there are different flavours and it‘s coming from an old Monastery near my Home City Goslar. There is also a famous Winter Drink by them called „Nönnchen mit Haube“ it’s basically cinnamon liquer in a cute little glass, heated up und topped with cream . You have to try it! It’s soo delicious🥰
I am in Berlin and have been to a few markets so far and never saw a hugo! But Yesterday I tried Heißer Johanna Likör and it was good! And tomorrow My Lumumba Making video is coming up! ;)
you should put blanched almonds and raisin in glögg it's weird but it's what we swedes do :D i know nobody that drink it just as it is .and Phil Scandinavia is Sweden ,Norway and Denmark the Nordic countries include Finland, Iceland and Greenland .
Another great video guys! It makes me want to travel to Germany just to try these drinks.I really think i'd like the Gluhwein but not sure about the Eierpunsch, I enjoy cold eggnog during the holidays but I've never had it heated. I'll try it and let you know.
Deanna if you like the Met that much, you should try to drink it with cherry juice 1/3 juice 2/3 Met or 50:50 it is called Wikingerblut but i am not sure if you should drink it warm.
I like Beerenpunsch - mulled wine with pieces of different berries (Himbeere, Johanissbeere, Erdbeere, etc.) And I did like to drink Met as a teenager when I used to go to gothic clubs. loved the sweetness of it.
For me much better than glühwine is Feuerzangenbowle, i love Feuerzangenbowle🤤! Not just cos the taste, its cos the serve on open fire too!😍😎 So feuerzangenbowle for me is the best!🧡👍
I've been binge watching y'all,I just found y'all! Definitely need some merch, I was so excited to see y'all's Xmas cups and thought maybe they were for sell lol.
Haha :D Just stunbled upon your chanel due to the 5 German songs reaction. Im from Hannover. I hope yall are having a great time. My ex Girlfriend is from Brazil and we found HOt Caipirinha at a christmas market in hannover.it was okay :D
My family has two favorites: Irish Coffee for Christmas morning Hot Buttered Rum for Christmas Eve (I make my own butter balls with butter, honey and spices. The pre made mix is truly vile!)
What's with mulled wine all of a sudden? You guys are like the tenth time I've heard it mentioned recently. The last time I heard mulled wine was when Clarence the angel asked for it in "It's a Wonderful Life".
Fun fact: spiced warmed wine was served for centuries on the noble tables in winter. I love the sweet Kinderpunch in cherry and apple cinnamon as I can't drink alcohol 😁 for me it's all about the spices 🥰
Best hot chocolate - for easy making at home - take you just a ready to drink chocolate at the grocery and a dark chocolate (at least 70%, i would say, a bit less or more chocolate is also great), put the ready to drink chocolate and the dark chocolate in a mug and heat it slowly in the microwave - slowly that it doesn't boil over and between stir up, if the dark chocolate is totally dissolved, it's ready to drink, you can put a bit tin whipped cream on top if it or just drink like so, how it pleases.
Hey you two if you snarft down all 9 in a row, then the next day you need some pickled Herring and a dry Roll against the Hang over. Its a old German recipe.or good old Alka seltzer. love all your vids
Grog has a rule here, that translates to "rum must, water can, sugar may" be part of the recipe... But yeah, Grog basically is watered down rum 😜 I moved to the Northeast, and here hot Sanddorn juice with or without a shot of alcohol is a big thing, and really yummy... And, Feuerzangenbowle for me is a student tradition that involves watching the old Feuerzangenbowle b/w movie while drinking Feuerzangenbowle you either made yourself or get at the party venue... If you are a hardcore guy, you bring implements from the movie and use it on cue 😁
I didn‘t See a hot Hugo so far and i‘m living near Goslar. It’s also lower saxony, but we have like hot chocolate with a Shot of baileys or other strong alcoholics, very Delicious 🥰
The Glögg should be mixed with water and vodka. Makes it less sweet. Drink it with gingerbread cookies (and blue mould cheese (Rockefort if you like that)) on the side. And make sure the Glögg is really hot when you drink it.
Just found you on RUclips and I'm watching a lot of your videos in the last two days 😅. So seems like that I really like your Vlog. After I saw this video I just thought that Phil should give Eierpunsch a second chance. But you guys should make it yourself from scratch... I really don't like the christmas market one too because it's mostly made out of a bad white wine and bad Eierlikör so there's no reason why it will get better. I'm always making a few bottles of "Hudson Bay Rum" for baking and stuff, with that one I'm doing the Eierlikör and out of that one I'm doing the Eierpunsch with more rum but it's way better than the christmas market one.
I didn't know that germans have their own versions of hot chocolate or eggnog. Wow. But then again many Christmas traditions came from Germany. Including the Christmas tree.
Hot chocolate actually originated in the Americas, Mexico in particular. Cacao was domesticated in the region and the indigenous people there dried, roasted and ground the seeds, creating chocolate. And it was mainly consumed as hot chocolate. The Spanish introduced it to Europe and they switched the hot water for milk
Mocha latte is my favorite thing to drink when it's cold. Not necessarily a holiday drink, but I have trouble drinking hot things in the summer when it's like 90+° here in Iowa. I have a question. This has been the year of discovering my German side. Some family from Germany came here and we got to meet this summer. I've been ordering some of the German sweets you guys tried. Now I'm wondering, is there one main go to alcohol in Germany? You know, like Russia is known for vodka, Mexico for tequila... What is it in Germany? I loved the Christmas market video, now I really want to go!Thanks, and Merry Christmas to you both!☃️
Probably beer, which is popular all over Germany in many varieties. Liquorwise probably "Korn", which is made out of grain like wheat, rye, barley, oats or buckwheat.
It's so cool that you guys visited the xmas market in my hometown Hannover. Hope you enjoyed it ! Why did you choose Hannover and Göttingen for your tasting?
I'm not drinking alcohol...or coffee. So the one and only Thing at Christmas is Kinderpunsch or Heiße Schokolade...But if I would ever try something with alcohol...It would be Met because i like honey flavour...
Hot spiced apple cider, hot buttered wine, hot buttered rum,hot honey mead egg nog, Christmas punch (spiced juices in vodka) just a few of the holiday drinks in my state Tennessee, I think it's hilarious how Europeans always seem to bring up diarrhea in taste test ! Lol
I'd love to see you guys do an episode where you try various kinds of sausages like knackwurst, weisswurst, kasekriner, krakauer, bockwurst etc. and give your ratings for them.
That was fun to watch, as all your vids are! Question, the cups, or, ah, horn, that you drank out of at the markets, do you keep those? They were cool mugs!!
Cool video! I like your videos, especially when you "test" stuff ... And if you really want to drink great Glühwein from the supermarket you have to buy "Altdeutscher Glühwein" from the company "Kunzmann" ... the "älteste Glühweinkellerei Deutschlands" (so basically the oldest recipe for Glühwein in the world, I guess) ... This is really awesome stuff, and with 12 % alcohol it's the most "powerful" Glühwein I know. ;)
It's me again. I usually buy this Glühwein at REWE; and it's very often that it is sold out already - yeah, it's THAT good! (Again, no other connection to REWE on my side.)
@@DeanaandPhil Thanks for the answer. The "Altdeutsche Glühwein" is the one in the "Bügelflasche" (swing-top/flip-top/clip-top bottle - I don't know, which one is the right translation). And there is also a "Bio"-variation of this Glühwein, but I have never tried it, as it has a little less alcohol! ^^
Also, if you want a different and amazing white wine experience, try “Weiss&Heiß” of Schloss Wackerbarth (search online maybe). It’s expensive but in my opinion is unreached in Christmas drink ranks.
If they added some "grandpa ingredient" ... Okay this could either be Werther's original caramel sweets OR something minty... what would you define as something only grandpa's would eat or drink ?
Last year we had a small Christmas market in our village. There was only this Apfel-Zimt-Ppunch at almost all the stands. I hated him. Only one stand had Glühwein and it sold out quickly. I was disappointed.
The holiday spirit is here! 😜 What is your favorite Winter drink??
definitely irish coffee
Still hot chocolate even when I get older😂🍫🥛
"Minute Made" also "Juice Cocktail"
Coffee with Baileys or Kahlua
Göttinger Weihnachtsmarkt? :P Grüße aus Northeim. :P
Hot chocolate with batida de coco. :P Choco-coco!

I love hot Apple Juice with cinnamon 😍
A Childhood favorite that has not worn off hot chocolate with 14 large marshmallows. Also hot chocolate with hazel nut flavoring.
In Mannheim, they usually had a cinnamon stick in your cup, 83-86,-------89-92
Try Lumumba its Hot choclate with Rum ^^ - also we dont have hot hugo here in bavaria^^
Great videos :)
Im from Germany but I live in the moment for one year as a volunteer in Ecuador. And I really miss the Christmastime in Germany. Your videos about it are heating up my heart 😘😍 thanks fot that :)
Frohe Weihnachten
Max

@@katjah.7405 That was years later ;-)
In Belgium we have advocaat which is basically eggnog without milk, over here they get it in tiny cups along with a cup of coffee.

I use V.S.O.P. Brandy in eggnog, rum is a good substitute. Depending on your guest use the 151 proof Lol

1 Flasche guten Rotwein (wir bevorzugen trockenen Wein)

if you like christmas markets try the spektaculum lichter weihnachtsmarkt in Dortmund, and drink the Thors Hammer

Wünsche Euch Frohe Weihnachten.... Alles Liebe und Gute.... :-**
I didn't know that germans have their own versions of hot chocolate or eggnog. Wow. But then again many Christmas traditions came from Germany. Including the Christmas tree.
Oh Yes!! Hot Chocolate is not only a Christmas Tradition. Its also available the whole year in every Cafè, Restaurants or even Mcdonalds.. 🤗
Beer. Oktoberfest.
It's so cool that you guys visited the xmas market in my hometown Hannover. Hope you enjoyed it ! Why did you choose Hannover and Göttingen for your tasting?
ah ok, because of our amazing forest. Hadn't seen the previous video yet. That explains a lot :) Merry Christmas
I'm not drinking alcohol...or coffee. So the one and only Thing at Christmas is Kinderpunsch or Heiße Schokolade...But if I would ever try something with alcohol...It would be Met because i like honey flavour...
Hot spiced apple cider, hot buttered wine, hot buttered rum,hot honey mead
egg nog, Christmas punch (spiced juices in vodka) just a few of the holiday drinks in my state Tennessee, I think it's hilarious how Europeans always seem to bring up diarrhea in taste test ! Lol
It's no surprise that Kentucky and Tennessee have such a strong tradition of alcohol production. The region had many Scottish and German immigrants
Guys in which chain did you see the Kinderpunsch? We shopped at Rewe today and couldn't find Kinderpunsch ready to buy anywhere!
We saw it at Rewe a few days ago. We haven't seen any Kinderpunsch at Aldi or Lidl though.
I'd love to see you guys do an episode where you try various kinds of sausages like knackwurst, weisswurst, kasekriner, krakauer, bockwurst etc. and give your ratings for them.
Schololade ... LOL :D
Btw - heißer, not heisßer ... heiß is the adjective.
schneeflöckchen. Drank that and hot orange juice at German Christmas Markets as a kid. You should try those.
Having my hot black coffee while watching this 😁
That was fun to watch, as all your vids are! Question, the cups, or, ah, horn, that you drank out of at the markets, do you keep those? They were cool mugs!!
Now you have to show her the movie Die Feuerzangenbowle with Heinz Rühmann.
Growing up in California in the 60s and 70s, we would add a touch of brandy and a dash of nutmeg to cold eggnog. Stir well first.
This is really awesome stuff, and with 12 % alcohol it's the most "powerful" Glühwein I know. ;)
Oh, and I SWEAR that I don't have connections to the "Kunzmanns" ... I just like their Glühwein and don't receive money for recommending it!
It's me again. I usually buy this Glühwein at REWE; and it's very often that it is sold out already - yeah, it's THAT good! (Again, no other connection to REWE on my side.)
Thanks! Sounds like a good Christmas and New Year's Glühwein to share with others. We'll look for it at Rewe! 🤗💜
I've seen "Glühgin" here (southern Germany), it's hot Gin with Apple Juice, cinnamon and some other spices. It was really great :)
Can you find Heisser Met in the US? I would love to try it.
You should definitely do more alcohol related videos. Drunk Deana is awesome :D
Also, if you want a different and amazing white wine experience, try “Weiss&Heiß” of Schloss Wackerbarth (search online maybe). It’s expensive but in my opinion is unreached in Christmas drink ranks.
Lumumba? 🤔
If they added some "grandpa ingredient" ...
Okay this could either be Werther's original caramel sweets OR something minty... what would you define as something only grandpa's would eat or drink ?
We have hot Hugo in Mannheim and we have the full thing including mint leaves 😋
Last year we had a small Christmas market in our village. There was only this Apfel-Zimt-Ppunch at almost all the stands. I hated him. Only one stand had Glühwein and it sold out quickly. I was disappointed.
