      The review is this particular reviewers opinion and they viewed that as a negative of the game. It is perfectly fine if it is something others enjoy and we encourage people to try for themselves or agree and disagree.

    6:10 I think that was meant to be a modern take on the audience mechanic from Paper Mario, more specifically the audience from Origami King which can give you tips on how to play.

    I appreciate the honesty of your reviews! The game looks visually impressive, but sounds like gameplay left a bit to be desired. Still good but maybe not great. I hope the team continues because I'd love to see what else they can do with some gameplay polishing!

    I'm glad to have these but it's really stressful that so many Paper Mario likes have been coming out by indies but miss the thing Paper Mario best: writing.

    • @tessaPMpro
      @tessaPMpro 9 месяцев назад +1

      The thing Paper Mario does best is the battle system, Colour Splash and Origami King had great writing (arguably the best writing in the series honestly) but they were still disappointments because of their shallow and mediocre battle systems.

    • @MattVargas
      @MattVargas 9 месяцев назад

      @@tessaPMpro Ah, this comes down to taste and opinion. I'm sure the humor is there but the lack of ensemble cast and moment to moment events makes it hard to imagine I would put it above TTYD or Super. Origami King does make some effort to almost address this stuff and the turn table battle thing is a clever idea. I go back and fourth on if I'd play it but at some point I should give it a try.

      @@MattVargasI played and beat it twice, it’s writing makes up for the combat system, also battles happen less frequently the further you progress. You don’t level up per se. but you do find hp hearts every once in awhile that make you stronger and have more hp. So you can kill enmities from the overworld the stronger you get.

    I’m surprised you didn’t mention how Loaf doesn’t have many support skills. There are a few of them in the specials but the lack of them in the “weapons” category was very noticeable for me. Loaf is rather uninteresting in combat because his turns are mostly spent just doing different flavors of damage with the only major difference being what each weapon targets and how many times they hit, making the customization options less fun as they don’t change how Loaf plays

    It's too bad that it drops the ball on what even the original N64 Paper Mario had that kept it fresh after all these years : amazing writing. I'm playing it now on the Switch's virtual console and I gotta say it might be a tad bit on the easy & childish side, it stands the test of time. As a 33 yr old the nostalgia and quirky jokes still get a smile outta me. I also enjoyed the references to older Mario games + things that would inspire future games.
    The combat and music definitely look fun and enjoyable, but without an engaging story, I am missing something to string the fights together. And I could just buy the soundtrack and enjoy that on my headphones in the bus. 🎶
    I guess I might be better off saving my dough for the TTYD remaster on Switch. I miss the chaotic nature of the combat, with random stuff happening like light fixtures falling from the ceiling, shy guys running into the backstage and bosses eating the audience to heal. 😂 -Speaking of, you could press a secret timing on attack to do "stylish" moves, which would give you more power points. Good times. ♡

      Ngl I actually found the story very good. The only part that wasn’t the best was the end, which felt a tad anticlimactic. But other than that, the main story is good and the subplots are pretty nice too

    I must say I’m genuinely surprised that it wasn’t mentioned in the review, nor anywhere in the comments, that you can cheese the battles pretty badly using “Defend”. I’ve found during my playthrough that most battles can be completed without EVER taking damage by having Loaf do all of the attacking while his partner just uses “Defend”. Not only does pushing the button at the correct time negate ANY damage, it also gives you WP.
    Oh, and I’ll agree with others in the comments that I wasn’t really bothered by the online streaming/chat audience with the battles.

    This game is on a 50% discount on eshop £13.49 in the Uk. I found the demo to be a fun little simple rpg and my 5yr old loved it. For the money I would be tempted to pick it up but I have Paper Mario 1000 door coming in 5 days.

    15-20 hours but not good storytelling? That means a pass for me, cause Im not big into turn based combat anyway, so I would need that aspect to be stellar to get me through. Thanks for the detailed review, Joe!

      IMO from what I’ve seen the story is fine, or at least simple. It’s no Bug Fables or TTYD but I don’t think it’s as crummy as the reviewer makes it out to be.

      I'm going to say. Paper Mario 64 personally is my fav paper mario and its story is damn near non existent. The partners held no value in basically all paper marios outside combat. Unless it was the chapters you unlocked em. Those games menu's are no better and thousand year doors audience system was unnecessary as well. Which was part of why I preferred the first. But it's really just, a paper mario game without the name. I think the issue with this would be more that, Bugs fable was willing to differentiate the game enough to be inspired but still be its own thing. While this just seems like it tried to be Paper mario.

      It's not like the first two Paper Mario games, or most video games in general for that matter, have good stories in the first place. Not defending the game as I never played it either but if you want a good story, why are you even playing video games in the first place?

      This review has on nostalgia goggle tbh. The game is great. I'm like 4 hours in and the story is simple but no where near bad. Even TTYD was really simple, but it's the writing that makes it come to life. Same with this game. Incredibly charming.

    The competition for this type of game isn't exactly hot right now. Even if that Paper Mario 2 remaster came out tomorrow, it's still just a remaster of a game I've played and beaten a baker's dozen times. So, yeah, I think I will wishlist this one.

    (i apologize this comment is long I just wanted to get out my thoughts slight spoilers for 3 partners motivation specificaly the 3 partners shown in the video)
    Personally i Will admit i do pretty much agree with your review. I havent finished the game completely myself but i believe im nearing the end of it, based on what's going on in the story. Personally i think at least for what its going for its a really decent attempt, but it definitely has things that need ironing out namely some bugs that ive encountered. But aside from that using bug fables as an example of an optimal paper mario style game to compare. In born of bread the story outside of certain moments dont feel like they should have as much kick as they should, the story and drama is there but the characters dont feel like theyre reacting as they should. Perhaps its meant to be a more modern take on these things but at the same time i do agree. The story so far isn't as much of a kicker as it should be, the companions are great but they feel like at least where i am in the game are just there. Still carrying their emotional baggage that hasn't been naturally resolved when i feel like it really should've by now. Bug fables did this well where the drama was alot more heavy and built up throughout the game and more or less happened in tandem with the story. With this game it feels like everything gets put on the back burner to deal with the main threat, although again i haven't finished it. But still we get a lead on one of the characters problems and it doesn't get resolved with the lead being a dud and it doesn't come up again. Albeit the first party members drama is indeed dire but again it never seems to come up again making you more or less forget about it. Until a random peice of dialogue reminds you about it. In bug fables during transitions and just generally traveling the characters talk amongst themselves which keeps their drama more or less on the table. Be it a deflection to avoid talking about it or a question in an attempt to help, it keeps things balanced between the side drama and the main story. While in born of bread outside of slight commentary between characters when talking to NPCs, the only time we get any major peaks into characters insights and thoughts is when a chapter ends and the group takes a breather. Unfortunately the banter is not about themselves its purely about the current events and slightly about their personal things, and the worst part is that stuff can be skipped because it requires the player to go and talk to them to get these interactions. Depriving the characters of characterization it made them feel somewhat stale. In bug fables the main cast was always chatting with themselves even during npc dialogue whenever, I was running around in born of bread I kept thinking to myself "is there a button to talk to my partners?" I wanted to talk to them get their thoughts I wanted to hear what they had to say but nothing. Its just unfortunate because these characters have the possibility to be very very deep with the troubles they have. (ill skip the final partner but the 3 i mention here are shown in the video)
    Lint: hes lost his family and joins loaf to find them its the aforementioned lead that ends up being a dud that I was referring to earlier. It never seems to get mentioned again as things go on, it could've been better if he keeps getting dud leads about his family as they progressed keeping his drama on the side while albiet still keeping to the task at hand. Giving him various bonding moments at the end of chapters as he looses hope of finding his family again, which leads to loaf and co needing to pick him up from his depressed state probably in a near last chapter with a post game quest give or take how it goes to actually find his family proper.
    Yagi: has an ongoing rivalry that just stops you beat said rival in battle and he just gives up and follows through on the bet they made which I didn't expect. It felt like they just shoved it out of the way 3 seconds after introducing it. What could've been better is have the rival be more annoying and pop up more have him go back on his word when you beat him and have him constantly show up ahead of you with a different gimmick, in a vain attempt to win before concluding with yagi being the bigger person and telling him he doesn't want to see his rival constantly beating himself down for loosing. Maybe have a post game final fight with just Yagi in a 1v1 without loaf to give it a grand conclusion after the bonding moment in a near last chapter instance, and throughout the story loaf and co can encourage yagi to tell off his rival when even he starts to get tired of constantly fighting him, and just wants to be friends again leading to bonding moments between characters.
    Chloe: she has big aspirations that the family underminds. She has a brother that sticks with her but she seeks ro prove herself to her family, which even after she helps loaf with his goal the family members barely change their tune at all. Even when one has a quest for you to do the belittlement never ceases, it feels like barely anything changes from her introduction to her full commitment to the party. Whats the point if minimal changes to give her hope of achieving her goals, it feels like she just comes along and has no other impact outside of that section of the story. What could be better is she starts to take criticism and belittlement personally due to her being so sick of it and have her constantly push herself harder and further to be better and prove them wrong. but resulting in her cracking under the pressure maybe have interactions with her slowly devolve into her being cold and prickly resulting in her eventually snapping and loaf and co need to help her realize she doesn't need to impress anyone and shes fine how she is. Maybe tie it into a battle where one of the villains roasts her or insults her and she gets injured for Getting too aggravated, it'd make the drama present but not annoying to hear about. Having it happen every occasionally. Its a delicate balance because given how the character is written shes naturally nerdy and perky, so optimally whenever the villains are involved or when shes by herself (maybe her and one other character or just her and loaf) this drama can resurface wearing her down, have her misconstrued compliments as insults or have her constantly seek to be taken seriously by the other party members. Something like that it'd make her drama apparent and show how given shes lived with belittlement, its been drilled into her head that she needs to constantly try harder to be taken seriously. Itd be realistic if she grew up on nothing but being seen as a joke in the eyes of your family, it would cause a bit of an inferiority complex. Thus throughout the chapters her drama ends up leading to her forcefully joining loaf in battle, when one of the villains insults her personally. She swaps out whatever party member you had at the time, maybe make it a 1v1 like the yagi concept or have a cutscene that would have her shoving everyone out of the way saying she can prove she can do it by herself. Maybe have it be a forced loss so loaf and co can help her and show her she's not inferior and she's better than what her family thinks, itd give lots of character bonding moments as she mentally becomes more unstable as chapters progress despite everyone trying to help her feel better.
    In bug fables the characters dont reveal their drama immediately but as you travel they slowly open up and opinions are given, advice is provided and as the story continues naturally the drama starts to become resolved, and the characters respond accurately. They complain, they gripe, they encourage, they compare, they act appropriately. With born of bread the lack of drama just makes the characters feel like theyre there and thats it. They don't comment they don't say anything, the godamn loaf that barely speaks feels like he has more expression and emotion than the characters he travels with! Which by default should not be how those circumstances apply in situations where the player character is mute or mostly mute, the partners need to be his voice. But instead they just say lines in tune with what they're personalities are supposed to be and they dont feel like they change much if at all. They just say the same old thing on the border of becoming repetitive and predictable I hope stuff changes as i reach the end, and hopefully post game. But still across the board I wish they said more, made more comments on things at the very least give me an option to talk to them about tbe surroundings like in bug fables. It'd make them feel like they're more there, and not just people ive got strapped to my hip because they helped me out that one time.
    In conclusion i agree with your rating but at the same time given what its going for i suppose some slack can be cut. Namely given what we're comparing it too who knows maybe some dlc or future updates can clean up our gripes.

      Bug Fables had the early bird benefit of being the first of its kind to come out, now every competitor is following on its coattails mainly. But also, just looking at it from afar, it seems like Bug Fables has a much better narrative, better characters, and a battle system that focuses on strategy depth over flare or gimmicks like Born of Bread. Also, this is just my personal preference, but I think Bug Fables's character design style is better, the way the bug species are used to create visually distinct and interesting character stylizations whereas Born of Bread pretty much just looks like any "sketch-style" twitter webcomic mixed with some modern Western cartoon Cal Arts style.
      And also Bug Fables is pretty much just Paper Mario 64 but with bugs and a better realized combat system.
