Bug fables was initially weird before the stickers, as they decided to make a game with the heaviest lore in the franchise, but it was a platformer. I think that game was like Super Bug Fables or something like that

Literally the devs of bug fables went " I'll do it myself" when seeing how paper Mario hasn't returned back to form since the thousand year door.
A lot of indies do that, actually. Shovel Knight, Bloodstained, even Hollow Knight to some extent.
The problem with Paper Mario was that, as soon as they decided on making a 3DS game, they needed something to set that series apart from the M&L RPGs. Up until then, the series had no overlap because one was exclusively portable and the other exclusively for home consoles, but once Paper Mario started encroaching into M&L territory, they suddenly needed to change the formula. So they went with the obvious route, which is to cash in fully on the whole "paper" gimmick. Especially with the success of Kirby's Epic Yarn (which is also what led to Yoshi's Woolly World and Crafted World). And gimmicks are fun at first but eventually they'll start bringing down the gameplay quality.
Think about it: Paper Mario 64 and TTYD have very few references to the world being made of paper. The characters looked like paper because it was meant to evoke a "storybook" aesthetic. Say what you will about Super Paper Mario, but even that game doesn't remind you that it's meant to be "paper" every 5 seconds. As a matter of fact, there's certain aesthetics and mechanics that actively go AGAINST the world being made of paper. It was a mario RPG world first, and a paper world second. Come Sticker Star and Color Splash and Paper became the central focus of the world, plot, characters and combat.
And that's really the crux of the issue: Paper Mario has become too much about Paper and too little about Mario.

Super Papar Mario is the last classic Paper Mario, even if it is different it still has the Paper Mario feel
Fun fact: I watched the first 3 minutes of this video, stopped and decided to buy the game. Five days later, I’ve beat the final boss and never felt more completed with this game. It’s an amazing and fun experience that always kept me in the game. Now I come back to this video to hopefully tell more people to play this game and to finish this video

@@cool-dx3df I mean, this is a game built as a spiritual successor to Paper Mario's first two games. It's never going to escape being in Paper Mario's shadow, so it's best to be compared to it favorably rather than not.
Arlo, because of this review I went and purchased the game on the switch immediately. I then spent the next day waiting anxiously like a child waits for Christmas for it to finally be available to play.
As soon as it was ready I played the ever-loving heck out of it and I loved every single moment and I spent pretty much 30 hours over a total of 2 days just so I could beat the main campaign and as many optional quests as I could and then defeat the after end game boss.
It was 100% worth the $25, and I've already started up the game again with the hardmode metal on permanently. typically after I beat a game I don't play it again because I get bored but this game is so good

@Pen Bashiro, MD Nah, let people play the game at their own pace. Even the devs say you should play this game at your own rythm. That's the idea about having the option to play it without the hard mode medal equiped.

i wish more talented people would do that after seeing a lot/too much amazing of fanart and projects with a distinct enough take, they're knee capping themselves with their fandom and leaving their inspirations unchallenged so they can ride the brand to sell a fashion line.
@@bobvella7228 There's a few indie developers out there trying to make their favorite game series come back again, but I think a lot of them are worried of having another "Enchanted portals"/"this game is literally JUST a ripoff of another game with no identity of its own" situation.

Crazy watching this game grow from tiny indie rpg to a massive hit. I remember two years ago when the devs were interviewed on the Let Me Tell You About podcast and it seemed like just a passion project that would be considered a hidden gem 10 years down the line. Nothing can contain my excitement for how far this game has gone

Probably because fictional bugs are usually simplified and anthropomorphized such that the creepy, ugly parts are gone, leaving behind cute little critters with colorful carapaces and antennae.

If its the music in the background it's good. I bought 2 copies of this game. One for my home / original switch and one copy for on to go with no wifi on my switch lite.
That is indeed Bug Fables music in the background, and it's actually the more tame pieces.
Bug Fables has different battle music for each chapter boss and they're all amazing.
I'm really glad I played this game; it's wonderful all around, but its music is especially good.
"Team, it's getting serious!" is easily one of the best battle themes I have ever heard in a game.

I'm glad this game was created. THIS is what Paper Mario SHOULD be. Even if Origami King ends up being the same stuff as its previous two titles, it's great to know that Bug Fables exists to help keep the spirit of Paper Mario alive.

are u in the position to say how a paper mario should be? The last paper marios just were different and that's ok.
Being different is okay, yet that shouldn't be an excuse to suck. The Paper Mario franchise has several issues in their latest releases (including Origami King). The games aren't properly balanced, and the story isn't as cohesive as it used to be. Those are objectively issues that even with no comparison (to the first Paper Mario games or Bug Fables) still exist.
Also, the paper gimmick gets old fast. You know something great about Bug Fables is you can take the paper aspect out of it and it would be still a functional game, the paper aesthetic is just visual presentation, not a core gimmick. You cannot say this about Origami King.

The fact that this game started out on /v/ as a tiny project and is now released is crazy to me. Its not gonna explode in popularity like Katawa Shoujo but it deserves sales.
Hopefully it does explode into popularity, it deserves the love. Paper Mario has lots of fans, and there are tons of arthropod enthusiasts out there.

Seriously, there are _so god damn many_ different elements to Bug Fables' gameplay that were either a) original, or b) clearly inspired by/borrowed from JRPG's and JRPG franchises OTHER than Paper Mario - Mario and Luigi, Earthbound, and Final Fantasy just off the top of my head - that anyone who doesn't notice that there's _something more_ to the formula has got to be suffering from a severe case of brain worm. They aren't just subtle differences, either. The _base formula_ is recognizably there and intact, as Arlo pointed out, but if that's really enough to qualify you for the "clone" label, then by that very same logic you could say that TTYD is a "clone" of PM64. Kind of a useless label then, isn't it?
But hey, I guess some people just don't bother reading past the headlines...
Best of all, no aspects or mentions about being flat or made out of paper, just a story book world that doesn't need to be self aware to be charming like hmmmm I don't know, Paper Mario pre Sticker Star.

I'm really glad he reviewed this game, because despite it being SUPER ambitious, its been out for a year and it seems like nobody has even heard of it! I was a little worried it might not sell well enough for the devs to make another one. With this video Arlo will probably single-handedly kick this game's sales into gear.

It's amazing. I got ttyd when I was a child, and I have been waiting for a game that made me feel the same way. This game scratches that itch with a chainsaw. It's a charming game with a great soundtrack and a fantastic story that leaves you wanting more. I love it.

i agree i felt the same way when i got capten toads treasure tracker for the wii u as super mario 3d world couldn’t fill the void that the older classic 3d mario games could and treasure tracker filled the void on just level 2 that’s nuts when i played 3d world and land and they Never filled the void and still don’t today but treasure tracker still fills it it’s amazing and bug fables does the same thing with the classic paper mario games that the newer games couldn’t fill

Tymetrain You have to remember that the paper name came from the idea of the game being a storybook in the Mario universe. That was the whole charm. To quote Arlo: “We don’t want Paper Mario, we want Mario Story”
You know, I always hated the arguement of "It was good but you only want it because it was good then." when it doesn't apply.
True, some games dont age well, but when I can pick up a game and beating it feels like swallowing a pill without water, and then when you play an old game you used to love and you just cant put it down...is the old game really that bad?
An example would be the first Yooka laylee. I played it, and I couldnt really enjoy it a lot. People said its because Banjos gimick sucks and you finally grew out of it.
So I played the first banjo and it felt so... different. It was fun in all the right ways, everything felt more charming and tighter.
And when people are told that, they just go "thats your nostalgia talking" and its just...
There hits a point where its not nostalgia fueling something alone. Sometimes an old game was done so well that other games cant compare, and sometimes truly explaining all the reasons why is a nightmare in an of itself.

I agree. I'm 18 years old, and I grew up on relatively recent games (GameCube/Wii era) so I don't have any nostalgia from anything N64 era or older. But when I play games like Banjo-Kazooie, Super Mario World, or Bubble Bobble (just to name some of my favorites) I'm blown away by how fun they are. I do believe nostalgia bias does partially play a role in one's opinion on a game, though. For example, I acknowledge that there are a lot of shitty things about Super Mario Sunshine, but I still love the game because I have fond memories of it. But most of the time, we look back on games we thought were good when we were younger because they actually WERE good games in the first place.
So how is it
People say that a lot about 3D platformers lately, Yooka-Laylee is not as good as Banjo-Kazooie and that’s the only argument people use to blame the whole genre saying it’s impossible for it to be a good genre ever again.

Idk if it’s due to having absolutely no nostalgia with these games, or because I just don’t like these games. I think it is the second option though.
It’s not that I don’t like the genres, but these games are just focusing on the other side of such genre that I desire. I like the 3D Mario platformers, Ratchet & Clank and Sly Cooper. And a JRPG might be my favourite genre, but for example... I like higher numbers, more epic storytelling, more freedom to explore and exploring an unknown universe.
That’s why I would rather get this game than an actual Paper Mario game, lmao. It has an unknown world to explore.

I don't know why anyone would assume bugs can't be interesting. They are some of the most unique creatures on the planet, and there are so many different kinds. Just make them cartoony enough to be relatable, and throw them in a world.
Half the characters I see wouldn't look out of place in HK! Most likely a big inspiration for the devs. Hell, the queenly-looking one at 2:51 has a mask very similar to what the spiders wear, sans a pair of eyes.
I’ve never played a traditional Paper Mario game before, but because of your enthusiasm, I gave this game a whirl and I love it more than you could imagine. Thank you, Arlo!

I don't know I feel like Hollow Knight's strengths lie more in its lore than it's characterization or in-story plot. I haven't played Bug Fables but it does seem to give it's characters more personality and have a more obvious in-game plot.

Another great aspect of the bestiary is that it shows you what each character would've said had you originally used spy as them. So much content - this game is incredible.

@@tsmooties there was only one glitch I found accidentally and I hesitate to call it one, basically you can get over a fence in chapter four if you jump at the right spot
I really hope that Bug Fables sells well. Not only do the devs deserve it, but maybe it will also show Nintendo how much love their is for the classic Paper Mario style. Also, I would love if the game sold well enough to warrant it becoming a series.
i hope so too. It already is on steam for like an year or so, i wouldve wished it came to switch first because i dont think nintendo pays much attention to steam sales of that game. But i am a dumbass and dont know how nintendo works so i could be completely wrong and it doesnt matter on what platform theyre selling their game

As someone that's into Entomology and absolutely adored Paper Mario as a kid, this game is literally perfect.
For me, I played Bug Fables about 2 months ago, I had never played a Paper Mario game before but I had played almost all the Mario and Luigi games and I personally thought the paper mario style would be unfair since you can't properly dodge but eventually I caved and got it...
And it became my favorite game of 2020
It's an incredible game, through and through, even for someone who isn't a Paper Mario fan

Metroidvania doesnt just have one successor bro it's an entire genre now and has been. Also both metroid and castelvania have released spiritual successors to both, all the DS castelvania games are all based on SOTN.
Successor to Metroid is called Axiom Verge and the successor to Castlevania is called blood-stained neither of which are bug themed
@@666slateran666 Also Hollow Knight is very much its own thing. Bug fables looks more like a retexture (judging from this video).
But I would argue that Hollow Knight really is the peak of Metroidvania atm. Axion verge and Bloodstained aren't nearly as good and I actually like Hollow Knight much more than any Metroid or Castlevania. The gameplay, the lore, the different settings and open map of Hollow Knight are far beyond of what Nintendo did.
This game is proof that you can still use the classic battle system and still have ideas in mind. It's the same battle system, but has its own ideas so that it stays new and fresh. The same can apply to the level design as well.
I mean, Nintendo has been basically doing the same with the mario and luigi games, can't see why not do it with paper mario

This review feels like total catharsis, and I think a lot of people in the Bug Fables community will feel similarly as I do. This game was a spectacular journey, I have never felt more compelled to get 100% completion in a game like I have this one and I loved every second of it. However, it is still a pretty niche game, and I think everyone was waiting for you to finally put your hands on it because it was much-needed validation and gives the game the attention it really deserves. Seriously, this review needed to happen, thank you!

That may be why nintendo refuse to make it themselves, they see the indie and think, bah pretty some indy dev will be able to make a more classic game, me, im doing something else instead.
For real, I had to have a nice long think about it, but I eventually decided that the only reason TTYD was even on the same level was due to nostalgia. When you break down a lot of the key aspects of both games, Bug Fables just keeps coming out on top for me in almost every regard with few exceptions, at least in terms of gameplay. Obviously story stuff is much more subjective

I just played through this game on PC, and I have to say that if you like the first two Paper Mario games and want a game that improves on the first two in almost every way, then get this game
This summed up everything I felt about the game perfectly. Its a game worthy of being called a Paper Mario successor. Honestly, I think it's better than the games that inspired it. I felt an emotional connection to those 3 bugs, and even the side characters by the end. It made me laugh, it made me tear up, and it brought me some of the most joy a games brought to me in a long time. I'm really glad Arlo loved it so much, and I really hope more people hear about this and give it a chance. And it's just as meaty as he said. In fact I logged 60 hours into it before I got the 100% completion, and the moment it drops on Switch, I'll be going for another round

My only disappointment is that you jump with A, which is just taking time to get used to since I played it with a PS4 controller on PC and jump was X. But even though I've played it already it's still a blast. In fact a lot of it is better because I know where it's all taking me, I can see all the little hints they drop

I still remember when I bought on Steam because it showed up in my recommended with a comment saying: "If you love the classic Paper Mario games, you'll love this game!". And then I bought and I regret nothing, it really is a great game that captures the tone and feel of the two first Paper Mario games while still being its own thing. Everyone should grab this game, be it on Steam, where it has been released since last year, or when it drops on the consoles, you'll not regret it!
Arlo says it’s a worthy successor to Paper Mario. That’s all the information I need. That’s probably the highest praise this type of game can receive. I’m pre-purchasing the Switch version right away!
I've seen many people saying it's even better than TTYD. Which is pretty insane for an indie team of 2 people. I absolutely loved TTYD and couldn't imagine better so this is a must play for me.

Actually, that's the worst kind of praise an indie game can receive. Your just putting it on a pedestal as the new paper mario without naming it's own merits.
Also the soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal. The wasp combat music is one of the most insane themes I've heard in a long time.

I like the conservative HP and damage instead of having 100hp early on and doing 30 damage etc, just like the first 2 paper mario games
I do wish we got a little more HP per level rather than +1 per character. Maybe even if Kabbu alone got +2 per HP pick.

@@WhackTheSack For me it is the true Paper Mario Sequel like Arlo says. It needs a little polish here and there, and maybe something like the Stylish moves and Star Power from TTYD, but it is a great game in its own right.
@@Cerebrum123 that's fair on the HP thing. As it is medals are OVERWHELMINGLY, overpowered compared to the other 2. I think giving +5 TP and +2 Party HP would balance it out. Medals are so broken it's worth having characters below 10 max health just to abuse them XD

@@BlissGeometryDash I realized very early on that in Bug Fables you get far more of an advantage by putting all of your levels into MP. I also agree that they should give a better bonus as an option for HP and TP as an incentive to use them at all. Fortunately in the current system if someone realizes that they made a mistake in leveling up there is a character you can go to that will let you reset all of your upgrades.
I spent 60 hours to completely 100% the game then instantly turned on the “HARDEST” mode cheat to play it again once I beat it. 10/10 would bug again

Funny, I’ve been working on the concept for an RPG starring tons of underrated organisms such as tapeworms and parasitic fungi, and there are LOTS of bugs involved.
Bugs are objectively cool.
(Also, good luck on the project! The world can always use more bug-themed stories.)

The most epic part of this game was when Kabbu gave the sad girl the Green Ranger doll. That little speech about how they all grew and surpassed the Bug Rangers was great. The writing in this game is dope.

Also helps that with the right badges, she deals like 20 damage in one move. She’s easily the most powerful party member if you know what you’re doing.
I feel like this is the kind of game that could get as recognizable and popular as Shovel Knight, to the point that we could be seeing Vi, Kabu, and Leif making cameos and guest star appearances in other games.
I'm so glad this game is starting to get the recognition that it rightfully deserves. Can't wait to play it on Switch on the 28th (if I have to wait any longer I'm gonna explode in anticipation)

I've been watching you since your Problem with Paper Mario video and I just wanted to say how glad I am that you like Bug Fables this much, and thank you so, so much for making a video about it. I played it on Steam late last year and it became one of my favorite games of all time for reasons I don't even really need to say, because you cover it so well in this video as it is.
The low amount of steam reviews and the information I managed to find though really showed the game didn't get much attention on Steam though, and it made me sad because the game all Paper Mario fans have been asking for for a long time has been sitting there available for months now, completely unknown to most people. And there's only so much a few very vocal fans can do to get the word out.
You can though because of your status as the "Paper Mario" guy and your word means a lot more than mine or just about anyone else's. And I'm so glad that you decided to make this video. This game is going to do very well on Switch now I think, and it so deserves it and it's probably going to be largely in thanks to you.

I LOVE BUG FABLES! It really is the perfect sequel to paper mario. Its amazing how many hours you can spend just exploring and discovering new things. It stands so well on its own! I wanna gush about this game for hours!!!!
I have bought Bug Fables two weeks ago and I immediately fell in love with it. Heck, it’s actually one of my favorite games of all time.
I love this game so much! I picked it up back in December on Steam and beat it in a week or two. To be honest I consider TTYD to be in my top 5 favorite games and bug fables actually does a great job at using that formula and building on it in different ways. Plus it's got an interesting world to explore with plenty of cute and unique characters. I wish nintendo would learn a little something from them lol. I'm still cautiously optimistic about origami king tho so we'll see

I just finished Bug Fables and omg you were so right. Its not just "the paper mario we've been waiting for", its more than that. Character development, deep story and lore, great music, better battle system... I feel like this is even better than the first Paper Mario. I havent enjoyed a game so much since Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon. Its just the perfect experience.
A healthy integration of Bug Fables qualities with that of Paper Mario’s under the paper Mario umbrella as a sequel to TTYD would slap.
Honestly I like these little indie spotlights, broadening peoples perspective from "oh it's just a ripoff Paper Mario" to "its like Paper Mario but better" I hope you find more indie gems like these 👍
When I saw The Origami King trailer, I was already concerned by how the combat looked. Thank goodness Moonsprout Games decided to announce that this hidden gem was coming to Consoles, I own it on Steam and I kid you not, I would definitely go for Bug Fables than the latest installment for Paper Mario.

The combat, in my honest opinion, looked like a more strategic version of the original paper Marios. Here's hoping stickers are gone forever though.
@@Enigmaculate It's not a traditional battle system by any means. You literally said it yourself. It's "ring based" which is new. The expendable "card" system isn't confirmed, but it isn't deconfirmed either. There's no visual evidence that Mario's got fixed commands and there is something like flower points that are required to use more advanced moves. It looks very much more like cards to me, the UI is far too simplistic to be optimistic of otherwise.
Even then, the battle system is one of many problems with modern Paper Mario. Clearly, there are no fixed partners, they will be expendable, as seen in the trailer. Mario is often battling or manoeuvering by himself which suggests overworked puzzles with partners are gone and partners in battle are either temporary or mostly gone too, especially when the HP system is borrowed from Color Splash.
You've also got the overemphasis in paper, which TTYD did embrace with its special moves in the overworld for puzzles but it didn't take over the entire story.
Origami King is going to be nothing like the originals, period. It may still be good, but don't go expecting a game like TTYD. You're setting yourself up for disappointment.
Ya bought on Switch, keep forgetting that it's not a paper mario game. Love it. Will probably buy it again on steam on a sale
