    Why did they have to show the duplicate cards in your deck anyway? If you have like 10 regular jump cards why don't they just show one with a "x10" on it?

      I was thinking the exact same as I was watching this. Maybe Miyamoto insisted on it being that way, so players would feel like they have lots of cards or something.

    • @ShyGuyXXL
      @ShyGuyXXL 8 лет назад +7

      The only explanation I could think of is that... maybe they did it because you can paint them all with different amounts of paint? Can someone confirm that? Can you paint cards outside of battle?
      But if that's the case they could still group the empty cards and fully painted cards together.

    The next Paper Mario will be subtitled 'Staple Stampede' and hinge around using staples to attach paper objects to one another. Different kinds of staples that do different things will be available, and the writing will involve frequent 'office' jokes.
    It still won't be super fun or full of interesting characters, but it will be...paperwork.

      See THIS is why we’ve seen less and less of Miyamoto during the Switch stage. Occasionally he’ll appear to smile and wave and we’ll smile and wave but we’re more surprised because “oh hey! Haven’t seen you awhile! How’s things?”
      Unlike the WiiU period where he was CONSTANTLY there and we just “dude I already said hi to you yesterday GIVE IT A REST! I’m trying to read a deep book!”

  • @pingasluigi25

    I don't quite get why Mario's attacks don't have numerical damage? It seems hard to judge what attacks are effective. Enemies do damage to Mario so why not both? It is just that they wanted to make you think it wasn't like an RPG?

      +Arlo nah Arlo I wouldn't lol CS is a complete fail and every bad thing should be mentioned like how some people hate the over top paper gimmicky art style and how the game is all just about the paper and how it's an actual paper universe (I don't like this either) there's not even files this time like seriously and battles I agree the no HP number thing is annoying and I miss tattling...it also doesn't make sense since Mario doesn't lose his colour when being hit and he has an HP bar sooo Nintendo why not enemies (even though they all seem to die in one hit before even attacking) also battles have no partners which also sucks, also nothing happens during battle unlike in TTYD I actually really loved the stage it was cool…so CS is way worse then the first 3 games and I wouldn't mind you making more videos on it be as harsh as you want lol CS deserves a -100000000000 like you said (ok maybe 3/10 at best) and maybe you should do a CS gameplay issues video & then a story issues video😌

      I never had an issue with the battle system, because usually it'd take that long for me to decide what to do, so I never noticed the speed.
      But I did notice the lack of numbers. Tip: If the card is fully painted, it does roughly the same damage as it did in Sticker Star. Most enemies have the same amount of HP, Shy Guys having 7. When the paint runs out, the remaining damage is quartered (I think?).
      Exceptions:
      Hopslipper does 1 per jump (10 total), wheras Sticker Star had it do 2 per jump (20 total). I don't know how much big/huge hopslippers do.
      Big Stickers are equivalent to Shiny Stickers
      Huge Stickers I'm not sure about, pattern says Flashy but they might be Big Shiny. I'm not clear.
      The Drill Shoe (no sticker star equivalent) is roughly the same as an iron jump.

    Can't. I can't buy this game. Even if it's decent as it's own thing. Because even as it's own thing Nintendo has gone and pissed me off. Saying it's just like Splatoon in advertising because, I'm not kidding, "They're both colorful games," "They use colour to play," "They're both laugh out loud (Or LOL as the hip kids would say)" and "They're both on the Wii U." ...Trying to swindle Splatoon players, a genuinely unique and interesting multiplayer shooter, to a freaking easy 'adventure' game because they both have Colour as a mechanic. So did Epic Mickey, nobody is comparing Splatoon to that. THAT was when I personally had confirmed that Arlo theory of Nintendo just... not caring. Seeing us as children.

      22neptun It's bizarre how much they've been shooting themselves in the foot this year. The only game they released this year that I can safely say I've had a great time with is Star Fox Guard. Not even Zero because even though I'm not as salty over the controls, I do believe they still shouldn't have been like how they were.

      Ryan S. I don't really care about the gameplay, I just want the game to have memorable characters and an original story. That's why I actually don't mind SPM at all. SF Zero just rehashed the story of SF 64, and Color Splash went back to "Bowser kidnapps Peach". These are dark times for a Nintendo-fan like me =(

      I agree. SPM is an excellent example of a game that veered off course, but it still amazing and deserving of being within the franchise on its own right. It was a spin-off, and a really good one at that, and it deserves its spot next to Legend of the Seven Stars and The Thousand Year Door. The same cannot be said for sticker star or color splash, which simply took the formula and removed things to dumb down the gameplay and add nothing of significant value.

      I honestly think the stickers and cards could've implemented alongside either of the previous three games' gameplay (be it the traditional RPG style of the first two, or even the platformer style of SPM), but the fact that they were given their own games as the ONLY battle system in their games is what makes their own games rather bad from a semi-objective point of view.

  • @Xnaut314

    ATTENTION PAPER MARIO FANS!!! Spread word of the following message if you want a proper sequel to the first two games. Supporting this game will only ensure a Sticker Star 3 will eventually come, but simply not buying the game may convince Nintendo to kill the series. So instead, DOWNLOAD PAPER MARIO ON THE WII U VIRTUAL CONSOLE WITHIN THE NEXT WEEK. If download numbers of the first game can rival or even exceed the number of sold copies of Color Splash it is the best shot we have as fans to show Nintendo that there is still interest and money to be made from Paper Mario, but not from the Paper Mario Nintendo thinks we want but from the Paper Mario we know we want.

    • @Xnaut314
      @Xnaut314 8 лет назад +8

      That's fine. I still believe that this game and Sticker Star is a bad influence on the series' future and that Nintendo could very well be conspiring to make TTYD fade into obscurity by ignoring its game style until fans simply give up asking for it but we must not let that happen. The series used to be so much more than just stylized graphics and constant one-liners and it should be more.

    • @CountMonsparkle
      @CountMonsparkle 8 лет назад +6

      That's actually a good idea. Even though I have the original, I will still download it anyways. Sales seem to be the only language that Nintendo understands.Which also means that, whatever you do, DON'T BUY THIS GAME!

    • @Xnaut314
      @Xnaut314 8 лет назад

      Same here. I still have my original N64 copy but this is the best way I can think of to tell Nintendo that the first two games are the formula Paper Mario should be following. I don't want the series to die, but games likes like SS and CS and a hypothetical SS3 seem like a fate worse than death.

SFZ wasn't about touch controls either--it was the fact that you had to look at the Gamepad screen to shoot precisely rather than just make the TV view have precise aiming. Same kind of issue here, but to a less game-breaking extent. There's no reason why we need to be stopping our game to scroll through cards, paint them, and flick them to the screen.

      If the gameplay was good I think it would of been 5/10 at best for me there's no story and that's #1 for me story means we get original noses chapters partners characters and enemies and usually better music with a story also colour splash still has no files or pit of trials or cooking etc...and a few other small flaws I've noticed like enemies and toads standing next to each other not caring about each other (the first section in the ocean fest level) and the fact that it seems like the dialogue isn't animated like in the first 3 which sucks I like the text moving sometimes to express how a character was saying the dialogue...so there's quite a bit in CS to be fixed •-•

    I love you - THIS is how you review a game that you personally dislike or have a bias against, especially under these odd circumstances. You still get your "not fucking cool Nintendo!" statement in there, and then you objectively break down its structure and mechanics and even try to figure out a demographic it would appeal to. Why is that so fucking hard for full-time professional reviewers?
    And this is coming from someone who shares your opinion and will not be supporting this game.

    You know Arlo, I can't help but feel compelled to say some words.
    Maybe because it's the fact you mentioned in the first 10 seconds or so into the video, that most of us found you via the video of your thoughts on Paper Mario. Maybe it's the time where the moment arrived to see how well you liked this game- or maybe I'm compelled to say something, because I've seen a decent of comments of concern that you possibly received a review copy, and worried you'll be "bought" out.
    The truth is, yes, I did find you because of your Paper Mario video, but it's not because we shared the same opinion that made me subscribe- it's how you expressed the feelings eloquently, and while all that was said I COMPLETELY agreed with, along with many other gamers I'm sure, it was simply beautiful how well you went about it. Then, as you published more and more videos, I couldn't help but find myself smiling when I see a little blue puppet on the thumbnail in my feed, I always save your video for last, because I know without a single doubt, I'm guarantee I'll enjoy. Heck, I always do my best to remember to leave a "like" on any video you've made, because I ACTUALLY like them- which is more than I can say I've done for any other channel.
    You have an unique channel- and it's not just because you're this adorable blue puppet (Ok, maybe that does add some charm because the facial expressions are so simple yet spot-on), I mean the actual content you do is simply different!
    I can't say I've seen other channels make videos such as "Concept you Want to see in Zelda Again" or "In Defense of-'", or one not so much about NX Rumors, but the calm before the big reveal.of the NX- those weird shooting stars, am I right? And your reviews? They're clearly thought out- like this one. While it WASN'T what you wanted, you give credit to both the good and the bad, and while I've only seen a few of yours now compared to other channels' review, you always seem to bring up some good points, whether they be good or bad, that other channels didn't. Furthermore- regardless of your opinion, whether it be in the majority or minority, you still express it- knowing backlash can, and probably will, return from random folks on RUclips. It's more beautiful than worlds can describe.
    I can say without a doubt, had your Paper Mario video NOT have been the first one I've watched of yours, I would have still subbed to you. I used to have a huge list of channels I used to watch, and I think this is the part where- "don't get bought out " comments come into play. Most of the Channels I saw all seemed to feel bought out, and pushed out quantity over quality- and in the end, I just don't watch their content anymore. But I don't worry about you being bought out- you do this with such a passion, it's amazing-
    Come next paycheck, you can be your sweet blue butt that I'll support you on Patreon- even reading that page alone properly describes all that you do- and why I, and I'd like to think I'm speaking for a lot of people here, love your channel.
    Anyway, that's enough from one random viewer,
    Have a good day, Arlo!

At this point I think it's really cliche for RPG Mario games. That's not going to stop me from trying out this game (though I'm still trying to find a copy of Thousand Year Door), but it's something I want nintendo to slow down on.

    Ok Arlo you've done it, I'm now using your videos to inform my decisions now. I can't trust Gamexplain anymore. Their positive review of starfox influenced my purchase of that game and I felt about the same as you did after a few hours of gameplay [bad controls and overall just a shallow husk of what 64 pioneered]. And now they just gave color splash the highest rating possible. (Sure the game doesn't look TERRIBLE, but nothing close to deserving that kind of praise). I have a limited amount of time and money and can't afford to buy every mediocre game ninty pumps out. Only the best of the best [i.e. splatoon] are deserving of my time [wow that sounded really arrogant] Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is- thank you for being honest and taking an objective view of this game. (Not letting TTYD fandom cloud your judgement or relief that its not totally sticker-star inflate your experience)

    • @pbjms100
      @pbjms100 8 лет назад +6

    • @PimDiffy
      @PimDiffy 8 лет назад +19

      That's fine, I was mistaken about the rating system, But it only goes to show that gamexplains opinions of an enjoyable game and mine don't line up. If you enjoy the game more power to you, show your support to nintendo and have fun with the game, but I will most likely not have the same experience.

    • @gulfgiggleanimations4472
      @gulfgiggleanimations4472 8 лет назад +1

      Why shouldn't you trust gamexplain? Sure, Andre had recommended a game that was difficult to get into, but he openly admitted to his experience with the game before launch. Their review scores are "it was boring" "it was okay" and "I had a lot of fun" and that's not an objective score like the terrible meaningless fractions that you see everywhere else, it's what they would describe their experience as a whole after playing the game. People aren't all exactly the same, some puzzles that would be obvious to some could completely ruin the experience for other people. What's important is to not have every bit of information come from the same people with the same opinions, and that's not just a rule for video games.

    • @PimDiffy
      @PimDiffy 8 лет назад +15

      jose ramiro reynoso ruiz Not at all, I enjoy gamexplain immensely, but after a few of their reviews ( and a few purchases influenced by said reviews ) I've discovered that I have completely different tastes than the people of gamexplain and (so far) Arlo seems to have tastes that line up with mine perfectly. Of course I don't make purchases solely on the opinions of a single person or channel but I do tend to trust their judgments and take them into consideration when making a purchase.

    Personally I love color splash so far. I'm currently working towards the blue paint star, and I can definitely appreciate the game as it's own entity. Probably my 3rd favorite in the series so far. The humor is probably some of the best in the series I love how expressive huey and Mario are. I could care less if the toads look the same, because they all have different personalities. The music and visuals are stellar! I'm also so happy they gave the koopalings personalities. Color Splash fixed all my issues I had with sticker star. The story isn't as amazing, but it's entertaining. The battle system isn't perfect, but it's more intuitive and thought provoking than say SPM. Really enjoyed the game! And this is coming from someone who grew up with the 1st two!

    All we wanted was partners, a compelling story, and creative worlds. Why does Nintendo refuse to do that anymore? And it's not just with Paper Mario, it's especially bad with the New Super Mario bros series that plagues every system. I understand that it's easy to wash and rinse the same 8 basic bitch worlds but it's like, damn, haven't we had enough of the grass levels or the sky world? Haven't we had enough of rescuing peach? Haven't we had enough of the Mushroom Kingdom being well...the same??
    Give us a world that takes place in the city or at an amusement park, somewhere completely made up, give us a concrete story for once, gives us new characters, the list can go on because nothing limits the imagination. And if you can give me something, anything new Nintendo--even if it's not inherently good--I swear I'll buy it.

      Grand Priest I don't watch Jared's stuff. Plus it's just Nintendo of America that's trying to get good with the RUclips community. The problem is that Nintendo of Japan has a very VERY anti youtube and internet culture philosophy from the looks of it honestly. And that even extends past RUclips and also into the realms of rom hacking and fangames/remakes and so on too. And on the note of youtubers I'm pretty sure almost all youtbuers have to pay a certain amount to even LP Nintendo games or be a Nintendo mainly LPer unless they changed that of course.

  • @thinkfact

    Really love your work Arlo, in many respects I have similar feelings over the game. I find myself fustrated with Nintendo over the newer games in the series because they are essentially trying to tell a story about paper rather than have paper help tell a story. The series has become so self-aware of the paper gimmick that it's becoming the story rather than help tell it. Heck, they're literally basing the decision to make a new Paper Mario game on whether if they can come up with a new paper gimmick, rather than coming up with a great story that can been have paper related elements incorporated... Sadly, until Nintendo higher ups realises their current"way of thinking" about Paper Mario is becoming a problem... I think the series is only going to continually become more unappealing to fans of the originals.

    Like its predecessor, it's obviously brimming with creativity, but it lacks the challenge and cohesive storytelling the first three games had. (Yeah, SPM was kinda easier than the first two but there were times when things got kinda tricky)
    Anyway, I don't really hate this game. I just hate the circumstances around it. If you want the game, more power to you! But unless it's gifted to me or if I borrow it from someone, I'd rather not shell out money for this.

      Ran a search to see just how accurate "massive hit" is. Turns out it's pretty much spot on.
      Paper Mario (64) - (???) couldn't find sales figures
      TTYD - 400k Japan, 1.4m NA, ??? PAL (PAL could add anywhere from 500k to 1m I'd wager)
      SPM - 2.2m worldwide sales
      PM:SS - 1.9m worldwide sales
      Overall it's a strong series but my estimations say it peaked with TTYD. Which is odd, since the GameCube as a system sold relatively poorly. Until the Wii U came around, I believe it was the least sold of Nintendo's major systems.

    Let's admit, though: Color Splash was certainly a step in the right direction from Sticker Star. Even if Nintendo didn't give some of the fans what they wanted, they can still improve the next game, which I assume will be for the Switch.
    (Still upset that it seems many people don't remember SPM. That was the first one that I ever played, and it still makes me tear up when I see the ending.)

    That was an awesome objective review, but can you please make a follow up where you talk about your true feeling towards this game, and the future of the PM-franchise in general? You could use that to also talk about spoilery stuff as well, like your opinion on the final boss and the overall "story". I just think there's so much more you could talk about.

      no there is no objectivity. If a game is filled with bugs somebody at some point had to have personal thoughts about that. Then a majority agrees with it and build up a consensus. That consensus overtime becomes a "standard" but it doesn't have to be followed in order for someone to say something is good because the human mind is capable of thinking of contrasting thoughts. In order for something in media to be objective a fact about the quality must be there before humans can give their stance on it . Objectivity is never reached when it comes to quality of something because the only way you can prove if something is good or bad is based off of and how most people feel which is subjective. (ex:saying the sky exists is objective because everybody can prove without opinion whether its good or bad can only be determined by some personal thoughts)

    • @Tyeタイ

      One year on and not a single one of these replies knows what an "objective review" means. If you state something objectively, it literally means you are saying that without being influenced by personal bias and you are giving it a fair judgement. It does NOT mean you are claiming that what you are saying is a fact.

    8:34 - You know, I've thought about this a lot, and while I do think the papercraft world looks good and is very creative, I absolutely do not prefer it to the earlier Paper Mario worlds. Everything specifically being made out of paper makes me feel like Mario just went to some sort of weird paper world instead of actually being in the Mushroom Kingdom or Rogueport or wherever else his adventures took him in previous games. And I know that the story of at least the first Paper Mario was basically told in a storybook, giving some sort of reason for Mario and all the characters in the game being made of paper, but the paper aesthetic of the more recent games kind of breaks my immersion into the world. Petalburg Meadows felt like an overall part of a connected and believable Mario world, whereas Ruddy Road didn't really. And I realize that the level-oriented aspect of Color Splash may at least be a partial reason for why that is, but I don't think that's all of it. TTYD had this sort of epic story feeling where Mario traversed the entire region at which Rogueport was the center, a new location in the world of the original Paper Mario, of which the Mushroom Kingdom was a part, and Color Splash's world just felt like, "Oh cool, look, that tree's made of cardboard."

    The problem with Paper Mario is just one example of a big problem right now in entertainment. Regular Mario games, Donkey Kong Country, Metroid, Mega Man 9 and 10, Sonic, and even Zelda have gotten dumbed down in different ways. It's not even happening just to video games, either; Teen Titans Go and the new Powerpuff Girls are doing literally the same thing on TV,.
    If the bland "edgy reboot" was the plague on entertainment in the 90's and 2000's, then I guess the bland "kiddy reboot" is the new one. It needs to stop already.

    • @RShonta
      @RShonta 8 лет назад +1

      Wait, how has DKC been dumbed down? The Retro DKCs have some nail-bitingly hard levels. The last few Zeldas gave us "Hero Mode" options (you can even double the difficulty in TP HD if you use the Ganondorf Amiibo). And Federation Force is a complete change of gameplay, rather than dumbing it down.

    Saying that anything in a Paper Mario game is deep is factually incorrect.
    Paper has a depth of 0.1mm.
    Cardboard is made of a corrugated structure, renering it hollow.
    Characters themselves are made of singular or multiple sheets of paper, making most characters have an average depth of 0.5mm at most.
    Most weapons and objects are papercraft, and papercraft is 99.5% of the time hollow structures.
    Things are inanimate objects, and when they are cards, they have that 0.1mm depth.
    Science proves that everything about Paper Mario is either shallow, or hollow by its very design.
    *The only thing in Paper Mario that has real depth is that steak.*

  • @DefinitivNichtSascha
    @DefinitivNichtSascha 8 лет назад +6

    I seem to be the only one that doesn't like the paper-aesthetic. Why?
    Everything looks like paper now. What is paper? *Lifeless.* And that's exactly how the game's world looks and feels.
    It also bothers me really much, that the game makes such a humongous deal out of incorporating the fact that everything is paper into the story. Every line is handcrafted to *shove as much paper in your face* that it just doesn't feel natural anymore. Hell, the whole reason Mario went to Prism Island in the first place was because a Toad was drained of his colours and folded into a postcard, that alone would've never made it into one of the original Paper Mario-games.
    The paper aspect was always just a *subtle stylisic thing* never mentioned in-game. The games could've very well had another name (just like *Mario's Story)* and it would've made little to no difference.
    Then there's also the *white lines* and the *clunky movements* that I don't find good choices at all.
    This all was acceptable in *M&L: Paper Jam,* as that game entirely focuses on the concept of having a real and a paper-world. But without that given contrast I see no reason to capitalize so heavily on this.
    In conclusion this is certainly better than Sticker Star, but that's not saying much.
    We do have to realize though, that if we continue to buy this *mediocre* stuff Nintendo is constantly giving us, they will continue to produce it. They still make *good games,* but that's it. *They're good, nothing more.* When was the last time a Nintendo game was really amazing? The only series that don't suffer from this are *Pokémon, Zelda, Kirby* and *Smash Bros.* and that is because they are all developed by *different people* rather than Nintendo directly.
    Sadly, these *average games* are good enough for *casual gamers,* but they get stale for us *"hardcore gamers"*. I have no problem with such games normally, I do really enjoy the *NSMB-series* for some light fun. I could care less if they *mass produced Sticker Star-games,* if they make money off it, good for them. But the fact that this *replaces* the Paper Mario series I love in its entirety is just inacceptable. (Which is why I (partially) don't get the hate against *Metroid Prime Federation Force.* At least not the whole series was changed, as it was just a *Spin-Off* (I do get that the wait for a real Metroid game is really agonizing though.))
    *Those are just my two cents on not only this game, but Nintendo's whole situation at the moment, and I'm glad if I got anyone who's read this thinking for a bit.*You said you didn't care about SS' world at all, and it's the same thing for me here:

    Color Splash is just really a bucket of mixed opinions.
    It pleases the critics who loved Sticker Star while displeasing the fans of the first 3 (and yes Super Paper Mario is a good game and has the BEST story within the franchise).
    Nintendo's starting to show there true colors with beloved franchises look at F-Zero
    Nintendo doesn't need it because Mario Kart exists and the sad thing is F-Zero is better than Mario Kart in its own ways.
    Even the director of both Color Splash and Sticker Star said something like why have 2 mainstream Mario RPG franchises and continue on Mario&Luigi and make Paper Mario into Action Adventure instead, The issue is that they don't care for the fans they care about the critics and whatever paper theme they can make a gimmick out of and Paper Mario is just one franchise that has fallen from grace with newer mediocre titles that fans do not want.

      I know what you mean, but I can't help but feel that TTYD is one of the reasons a GameCube VC doesn't and may never exist. Nintendo seems to want people to forget that TTYD ever happened so they can keep making games like SS and CS. If a GameCube VC were created people would demand TTYD appear on it, and new generation fans would join old generation fans in demanding a proper sequel after realizing that SS and CS are several steps in the wrong direction for the series. Nintendo thinks that old Paper Mario and M&L are the same thing but they really are not. Simply being different doesn't mean better or even good by any stretch.

    What did you think of the music in Color Splash, Arlo? While I don't necessarily think of "killer soundtracks" when it comes to Paper Mario (at least, not in same way I do with Final Fantasy, Zelda, Ace Attorney or Donkey Kong Country), the music has always fit the series like a glove and has helped shape how those games feel to play.
    I mean, PM64 and TTYD would've been great games even if the music playing in Toad Town or Rogueport was buttrock, but I just can't imagine those games sounding any different than they already do without them losing a good piece of what made them special.

    While I am pretty cynical toward Nintendo anymore for quite a lot of reasons, some reasons being objective (like their horrific handling of the Wii U and essentially slapping consumers like me in the face by pretty much giving up on it after only 3 years)... and others being subjective (like how I don't find the majority of Wii U titles to be the grand slam gems many tout them to be)... I always enjoy your perspective, Arlo. I respect your opinions. I also see in you the Nintendo fan that used to be me, and how deep down... I wish they'd do something to win me back. I haven't played it, but I have made a pretty lengthy review in comparison to sticker star and what it holds for the rest of the series. I think you might be interested in it.
    Color Splash is Sticker Star 2, and everybody who continued to say "Don't judge a game before you play it, it could be completely different!" were dead wrong.
    this is copied and pasted from another website and i got that line from this video after watching it
    That being said, Color Splash is Sticker Star *_2_*. Meaning it's a direct sequel. It parallels a lot with Paper Mario 64's transition to TTYD, it did everything a direct sequel should do. Expand the experience and enhance the experience.
    Sticker Star was soulless, lifeless, and didn't know what it wanted to do with itself. The worlds were empty, dead, and relied on the typical Grass, Desert, Swamp, Jungle, Ice, Fire, Air, Boss world theme for settings, though in Beta it had some interesting concepts. Due to being a new crew with a new objective and new orders from the big boss, they had to throw everything out and work entirely on reinventing the formula of the series. This led to them, just in my own theory, to play it safe and work with what they already knew instead of branching to new concepts with their new gameplay. (Actually, besides the soulless part, this is spot on Paper Mario 64...)
    By Color Splash's beginning of production, they already had the general gist of the gameplay and were able to focus less on the gameplay and more on expanding the experience, and enhancing the experience. They were able to flesh out worlds and breath new life into what Sticker star didn't have.
    They took what was metaphorically lifeless and gave it a soul. I'd like to coin the term Zombie game, when one breathes life where another one lacked.
    Sticker Star tried to be as different as it could be from the rest of the series, and as such, it didn't have the heart the rest of the series holds. Color Splash is a sign that we will never be able to reclaim the heart Sticker Star neglected, but it is a start of a new soul and a different direction.
    If you're looking for a fourth Paper Mario, Sticker Star and Color Splash are not what you are looking for. They are not Paper Mario, but a whole new direction that just bears the same name.
    One day we might get a game that comes close, but the heart of the originals is probably never going to be reached again, and we can only look upon what the future has in store for us.

WHEN I GOT TO THE BOSS FIGHT(AFTER ABOUT 85 MINUTES) I GOT REKT BY IGGY BECAUSE I DIDNT HAVE A SPECIFIC THING. I THEN REALISED THAT THE THING WAS A BONE. I ONLY HAD A REPLICA OF THE BONE AND I DIED. THAT WAS MORE BULLSHIT THAN WOOLLY WORLD.

    Arlo, big discovery!
    In the buttons mode for the game, I discovered how you operate it- when you select a card, press "up." To fill your cards, press A. then, to flick them up, just press up again! It's, confusing, but at least you don't have to touch the pad always.

    I'm honestly disappointed they didn't change more with the battle system in this game since that was Sticker Star's biggest flaw. Instead they just added more bells and whistles that only make it more time-consuming just to do a basic attack which are still limited. Maybe Nintendo will get the hint that I want the battle system to actually change this time if I just don't buy the game.

    I can appreciate the desire to judge a game on its own merits rather than on its predecessors, but I also can't agree with doing so. The fact is that by naming the game Paper Mario, by bringing it into that series, they've justified anyone wanting to compare it to the prior games. What does this game have in common with the previous ones? What reason was there to call it Paper Mario? This could have just as easily been a game from a new IP with superficial similarities to Paper Mario as it was a Paper Mario game with no meaningful links to its predecessors.
    When a company puts a name from a beloved franchise on a game that has no need to be involved with that franchise, it often comes across as an attempt to lure in fans of the originals. Even if the company is given the benefit of the doubt, and not assumed to be making a cruel cashgrab at the expense of the fanbase, it will *still* come across as a wasted opportunity. Far more so than if they'd simply dropped the pretense and not made any more games with the name Paper Mario in them.

    I feel like listing off everything I dislike about paper Mario color splash and the recent additions all together so here I go.
    (I just looked up and reaiised I wrote an essay ill put a short summary of each of the points above it)
    Short version
    Combat.
    If the series where to continue like this it needs to bring back badges and stat points along with partners. Also no thing anythings it ruins the strategy aspect while getting rid of the challenge and the need for bosses.
    Npc/Partners.
    I don't mind all toads/enemies but you need to make them interesting inside and out to actually make me care about them. Even a few costume changes would help. Also bring back partners with dialogue and personality
    The paper looks.
    Paper Mario did not focus on the whole paper thing as the recent games have. In the old games it was used because it was a story book we were reading out of and the paper was not the main focus because the story was the focus
    The story.
    Its not really all that different or unique its a bit boring, with a basic ending with Mario fighting Bowser with some twist along the way. The first 3 games did this already and some of them gave us something new with the story. (especially the 3rd one)
    The reviewers.
    Seems like the reviewers are praising this a bit to highly because sticker star destroyed there standards for the next installment (Its almost like reverse no mans sky effect) Even as a game on its own its just ok.
    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    The essay version (Im sorry if you waste your time on reading it all)
    1. The combat
    For me the combat in the first two games was great because you had badges, if you wanted to take a different approach or customize your attacks you could use badges and stat points to get stronger overall. In color splash you don't really have that, all you have are the cards that you fill up and attack with which are basically the equivalent to items in the first two games. Also combat looks super repetitive and boring if you continue playing for long enough.
    Next is those thing stickers... I hate them, it practically makes the boss die in a hit and takes the challenge out of combat making bosses kinda useless overall.
    2. Npc/Partners
    Im not sure why Nintendo is bent on only using Mario characters but that's not the part that upsets me. The thing that irks me is the fact that they only use the basic sprites and maybe change the color of them if you are lucky. Overall it looks lazy and even if the characters have something interesting to say you really don't care about them because they all look the same and its such an easy problem to fix. Lets say Nintendo wanted to use toads only they could do that but at least give them personality inside and out, for example you could have a toad in a tux wearing a monocle and top hat holding a cane and talking about how he owns all the shops in town and then lets say you have a generic toad saying the same thing, Im guessing everyone would care more about top hat toad instead of bob the generic toad.
    Another thing is partners. In the original games partners followed and aided Mario on his quest while talking to him along the way about what was going on. I feel like these types of games need partners because Mario is usually the silent type and the partners have a special place talking about what they are thinking at the current time and almost giving Mario a voice. I believe even in TTYD each partner would react in a slightly different way like goombella would use logic and her past experience and koops would usually be unsure about the situations unfolding. It gave the game charm and the story a bit more of a push.
    3. The whole paper thing.
    Yes the game is called paper Mario but it was also called Mario's story. For some reason Nintendo really wants to push the paper looks even though that was not the main point in the beginning. The whole paper look was because we were the ones reading the adventures of Mario in a book very rarely the characters realized that they where made of paper it was mostly used as a side thing and not used the main focus.
    4. The Story
    I haven't played the game (Waits for people the kill me for it.) but from watching live steams of the game it looks kinda boring and a bit generic. The paint stealing looks interesting but im guessing it ends up with Mario fighting Bowser with some little twist. Compared to the first 3 games it doesn't pull me in very much. It might be just me though
    5. The reviewers and fans of the game (not really a problem of paper Mario but it annoys me)
    I watched some reviews of the game by game explain and others but the one annoying thing is that the give it praise for being playable. I know sticker star was absolute garbage but they make it seem like this game is god tier just because their expectations were set so low. Its like comparing a bank account with -5$ to one with 1$ in it, yes its a better balance but its still not that great

  • @StacheBros

    I've seen a lot of reviews for this game, and a lot of people seem to not realize you don't need to use touch controls to battle. As unintuitive as it sounds "Basic + Buttons" is the best control scheme to select (you can switch that on the options menu). It allows you to navigate the gamepad with buttons (in addition to touch control if you feel like it). Flicking can be done by merely pressing up. It makes battles progress slightly faster, because it removes the clunkiness of the touch screen.

      Lilburrito , As of recently they've done mediocre stuff. Star Fox Zero, Federation Force, the whole amiibo thing to squeeze as much money as possible, Animal Crossing Party bullshit game, delaying Zelda Wii U promised by Nintendo to be out in 2015 but 2017 now and on a new console meaning if people want the best experience they have to buy a new etc.
      Nintendo just does not have their golden touch anymore. I see glimmers of it here and there, but between their half-assed work on games and their shitty 80's regressive approach to fans and technology, damn. How the mighty have fallen.
      Unless the line-up for the NX consists of 4 or 5 triple-A first party games with much more 3rd party support coming up is a thing, I'd say Nintendo just doesn't know when to stop fucking up.

    Am I the only one who likes super paper Mario the best of all of them. It was the perfect blend of a Platformer and an RPG in my opinion. Plus I mean it had a heaven and hell level! I'm probably a little biased because I am one of those people who are obsessed with Creepy Pasta's, but I also liked the story the best as well. It was dark, but it was still full of good humor. I did find a couple of the levels kind of tedious though. But I like super paper Mario the best. Still working on the original paper Mario and thousand year door.

      Nope, you're not alone there. However, it's hard to find SPM fans.
      I find SPM's story to be the absolute best of the series (as well as the darkest; like you said, AFTERLIFE level!), with the highest stakes/scale, and it's also the only one that deviates the most from the standard Mario formula in the Paper Mario series: THE MAIN GOAL IS NOT TO RESCUE PEACH AT THE END!! Hell, Peach is actually a part of the action, and you get to see her kick ass like she does in the fighting game spin-offs (something that frustrated me greatly when SS, PJ, and CS scrapped for making her the damsel in distress again). SPM Luigi is also one of my all-time favorite incarnations of his character (again, something that really pissed me off with the downgrades in SS, PJ, and somewhat in CS), and his role in the plot is actually really surprising.
      Then there's the villains. These guys really deserve more credit, especially Dimentio. Tbh, I find Dimentio to be the darkest and most deranged Mario villain ever created, and arguably the most formidable. People praise Fawful and the Shadow Queen for how cunning, dark, and how close they came to succeeding, when Dimentio is all of those as well, but on a much higher scale that puts him in a league all his own. Fawful and the Shadow Queen only wanted to take over the world; Dimentio wanted to become the new god of the MULTIVERSE after he destroyed it and remade it to fit his ideals, and Mario&co only just BARELY defeated him. Count Bleck was also really well developed with his backstory and motivations, and the rest of the major villains: Mimi, O'Chunks, and Nastasia were a lot of fun too.
      The 2-3 level was tedious and I wish the other Pixls apart from Tippi had more character development and battling was a bit more difficult, but it's still my personal favorite too.

      Derek Spradling God, I wish. I'd kill for a SPM sequel. Did you know that back in late 2007, director Seth Gordon (enthusiastically, I might add) wanted to make a (likely animated) MOVIE adaptation of SPM's plot? It sadly never came to fruition, but still! Just imagine if there was one, and it was loyal to the game (I know video game movies don't have the best reps, but one can dream, right)?
      A lot of TTYD fans praise that game as the best, but let it be know that SPM's story was so good, it was the only one in the series that a movie director considered making a film out of it!

    • @derekspradling7452

      Derek Spradling Exactly! Charles Martinet, voice of Mario and Luigi, even said he'd be on board with a movie!
      And it really comes to a head in Paper Jam. It's ok for what it was, but there were missed opportunities left and right. Like bringing paper characters that WEREN'T Toads or standard enemies, like the partners from the first two games, or instead of both Bowsers being the main villains, maybe the revival of past original villains (paper and regular) for team-ups (I personally would've loved an ungodly alliance between Dimentio and Fawful; idk how Fawful would be brought back, but you could easily revive Dimentio, he's faked his death before), and Paper Luigi was originally going to be playable, but they decided "nah, just make him a voiceless, characterless cameo who only appears in the music spot in the Settings". Come on, Nintendo!

      koots1 st Chrono Trigger has a pretty fun and unique take on turn based combat. Super Mario RPG and the older Paper Mario titles like 64 and Thousand Year Door also have fun gameplay. For a more modern series with a great turn based battle system and story, I'd recommend the Legend of Heroes Trails series. You can Download Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky 1 and 2 on Steam. You can also buy The Legend of Heroes Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2 on PS3, or PS Vita.

    Hey Arlo, I have a question. I've heard that you can paint and flick the cards by pressing up on the control stick as well as with scrolling the cards. How long does it take when doing this in comparison to Paper Mario 64?

    • @SherlockHyde
      @SherlockHyde 8 лет назад

      Having put some time into the game, I can safely say that it really just depends on what kind of attack you need to do, and how often you sort your cards. Sometimes, if you haven't sorted your cards, you can just hit the stick left or right a bit and press a and get it all done in about as much time as it would have taken in the first two.
      But if you sort your cards regularly, and need to use an unpainted Jump card, it takes a bit to scroll, because for some reason they decided that the more powerful versions of cards should be closer to the right instead of the left, meaning that your less effective cards (i.e. the kind you use for nobodies like regular Goombas and Koopas) are near the end of your deck, or right in the middle if you're using hammers.
      It's really tedious, and the worst part is that you can't just sort your cards in the order that would be most efficient for you personally. Like, if you could just create stacks of card types to choose from, it would be fine, but you can't for some baffling reason.
