Great to see this -- didn't realize how much work went into these peppermills. These are all beautiful. I'm a sucker for burls and "rotten" wood -- and resin is great for making these pieces usable.
O. M. G. Jim you did an amazing job with these pepper grinders! The purple one is my absolute favorite. You can keep your blue, lol! You outdid yourself!!!
Stellar and classy. I'd have to have one if my train came in. Or try and make my own, but then I'd need to commission your time to help me organize a left hand shop, I really like how you do things around there. Blah blah dreaming in the day. Awesome job. Thanks Jim
Turning videos are so relaxing. I watch a few of you because I do like the epoxy stuff. I see you are close to that 100k play button so I subbed to help lol
As always fantastic job. Glad the worms did some of the work for you. I found it most interesting that you mentioned Lee Valley. I talked with another turner about where she got her 4 jaw chuck and Lee Valley was what she said. So I have one one on the way. I live in Chapel Hill NC. I told Lee Valley that I watched your videos and they said that you bought items from them. Thank you for your videos.
Holy Wow! I think these are beautiful! I would love to see you do more sets of objects. I love seeing them all side by side. Plus, the end coating and first look at the shine was absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for these works of art!
You are definitely a gifted man. I turn as well but I tried to copying your work, although I didn’t have the same wonderful pieces of wood you had, I tried as best as I could but I didn’t get as well even close as well as you do. You are quite an inspiration to be. Your instructions are very clear and concise that you make it make it easy to follow. Thank you for your wonderful presentation and your work. Great to watch!
Great Mills, I've made a number of them myself. Nice to see how another turner approaches and finishes a project. I learn something new each time I watch one of your videos and it's great inspiration. Thanks
You'd think they'd have PVC pipe in a similar diameter. They've got that in many sizes and it's relatively easy to cut open if you need to. I saw that girl turner you recommended do this with a smaller diameter. The poly is probably less expensive than PVC pipe tho. The poly also lets you see how well the resin is penetrating, too! These are the most beautiful peppermills I've ever seen! I'm also strongly considering eventually doing a set of salt and pepper mills for my house since the ones we currently have are just not matching our color scheme. And really...this is so incredibly beautiful! I hope I'm eventually able to break into an artistic medium where I can do stuff like this too! It's funny, the rot is actually the most visually stunning part of the wood on these pieces. It may be awful for the tree, but all these maladies make for some beautiful wood pieces!
I think its obvious that everyone loves these mills! but i am more thankful for you showing how you re-true the blanks in your chuck, i never would have thought of that!
I like the mills, as you do making them. "wink wink" They came out stunning. As a pepper fan, they won my heart. Had to give up salt, so now I use a lot of pepper. Have tried the batter powered ones, not a fan. Maybe it was the 5 or 6 we've tried. Hand mills is the only way to go. I'm sure the owner of these will love them too.🌿 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
One other thing. I have VERY buggy myrtlewood bowl blanks. Approx 12”x 4” thick. I have turn a couple. It’s been around along time and the bugs are gone. After you turn the bowl you can blow out the bug excrement and you are left with lots of bug holes. Would look cool with colored epoxy. Interested? I could check on shipping cost from Oregon to Canada.
Yes these are freakin awesome!! You’ve made me look at gnarly rotten wood in a whole different light. I would have easily thrown these into the fire wood pile before you took me on your resin discovery journey. Can’t wait to try this myself. Thanks Jim. Fantastic as always.
What a great showpiece for your dining table, and in something both functional and gorgeous! I love how the use of resin has given new life to insect-riddled and diseased pieces of wood, and a chance to see their beauty.
Heck yeah man. You inspire my wife at turning and I definitely get some help and ideas from watching you and learning. For when I make a piece of wood ugly on the lathe 😁
They are all gorgeous! It’s kinda funny that bugs make something so beautiful. All of the colors are so pretty but, I have a fondness for mother of pearl so, those are my favorite.
Thanks For this video Jim. I've only turned a few tool handles between centers, so making a pepper mill will be a real learning experience. I've got some spalted maple that's too far gone to make bowls from, but I'm sure I can salvage enough from it to make a few mills. Thanks for all the tips!
Just a suggestion, look into some PVC pipe from an electrical wholesaler. Maybe even a box store may have it, but I haven't seen anything over 2" ID. Along with some mold release, it should slide out- Although I just turn it off since it is a soft plastic. Happy turning!
I’ve tried the pvc and the resin stuck bad, I use a crappy mold release so that’s probably the issue. Like you said, it turned away easily. I was also using the plastic because it’s cheap and the viewers were able to watch the resin being poured into the blank. It would of been ideal to not have the plastic so tight. I’m pretty sure that’s why there were air pockets in some of the mills. Thanks 🙏
@@SpragueWoodturning I read somewhere that a thin coat of mineral oil works for some people. It maybe something I have to try in the future. Keep up the fantastic videos.
Thank you for this video. I have been thinking of turning some salt and pepper mills and now I feel even more comfortagle trying my hand at these. I enjoy your videos with your teaching method. Well done.
You might try PVC pipe as your resin form. A little car Bondo on an end cap make it stand straight, and mold release. It might be worth a try. Beautiful work by the way.
First time watching ur channel. Saving for my first lathe and can't wait to start turning. I've never seen pigment into the CA glue. Nice trick. Thanks!
Jim, we have so much in common you have an open invitation anytime to head south just over the border to here in the Adirondacks and spend a day in the shop comparing notes, experiences and some lathe time.
Excellent presentation Jim. You explained the entire process and the sourcing of all the components very well. The end result was beautiful and the product should last for many years. What a nice gift idea. Enjoyed your demo and look forward to seeing many more.
Beautiful work. I love the purple and blue the best. I'm sure your client will love them. I've seen other turners use thin sheet Plexiglas to make forms when pouring resin. Maybe that's something to try.
Peppermill extravaganza = EXTRAVAGANTLY GORGEOUS pieces of usable art! Each and Everyone of these mills would be worth the price! #gnarlier = more beautiful! From the minimalist green to the stunning purple and gold! 😍💕🎊🎉💫 while blue is not my favorite color, but you might convince me with your favorite mill 😉 its getting close to ultra marine from historical paintings 😃 BTW....you need to hit duck tape up for a sponsorship! 😜😆
These are all beautiful. I especially like the purple one, because I think that colour goes really well with the wood. I think that I personally prefer the bulb top instead of the pointy top, but it still looks great. Good video 👍
8:03 That lilac purple is pretty but then again I love all shades of purple or blues. 😊🥰
Thank you very much!

Very nice. Start making lots. These will be going fast. Great job.
