You CAN Wear Swords on Your Back (should you?)

    Anyway.
It's always funny to me when people always go to Shadiversity as proof that a back scabbard can work, but they overlook the far simpler method from Nate V:
    • SOLVED? Draw a SWORD f...
But even though there are two methods where we could wear swords on our backs, at least, should we? The Witcher does, should I do it IRL or in Dungeons & Dragons?

That's actually in the books. I've only read the second one, but it has a surprisingly detailed explanation of how he gets it out of the scabbard by pulling on the strap to make it flip up a little. It honestly reads like someone spoke to the author about the impracticality of a back scabbard between the first and second book, and he added that to try and justify it.

I do remember reading a piece that said that larger blades such as greatswords were often transported on the back since they physically cannot fit on one's hip; they'd drag on the ground. However, it was only transporting on the back, not wearing it as such into battle.
I think that a blade on the back fits great in two scenarios:
    1. Soldiers carrying their greatswords to war and unsheathing it before battle, carrying it on their shoulder to where the fighting is.(ala Guts from Berserk)
    2. A scout who is more occupied with being maneuverable and nimble than combat ready, trying to stay out of fights instead. Having a blade on your back(if secured tightly, that is) allows for more sporadic movement than one on the hip. It sways a lot less that way.

How about in scifi setting like in Metal Gear Rising where Raiden's scabbard can move to the back and side depending on the situation?
Back for carry and ninja running, and side for iai quickdraw.
And probably add a quicklaunch feature that launches the sword up if unsheathed from the back so the user(presumably with enhanced reflex) just catch the sword in the air instead of pulling it.

I like how in Harrow the Ninth (The Locked Tomb), Harrow carried Gideon’s sword on her back because she never used it and was just holding onto it until she could give it back to her. It also was a regenerating bone scabbard she could dissolve at will, so she didn’t need to actually draw it from her back anyway.

I'm pretty sure I ran across a story and or was told about one where the main character carried a two handed sword on his back in a loose sling and that was not strapped down. Come battle he tossed it over his shoulder, Drew The Sword in his right hand, threw the sheath off to the side with his left hand, switchef to a two-handed grip and then went to town.

A little unrelated in my opinion, but I always liked the design of Raiden's scabbard from Metal Gear Rising. It's mounted on an adjustable mechanical arm, meaning it can move and adjust to allow easy drawing and sheathing of the blade, and we see it clearly in the cutscenes it happens. Honestly, if we were ever to properly mount swords on our backs, it would be like that and I hate how people just completely ignore stuff like that. Not every use of back scabbards has to apply to medieval fantasy settings, there are some of us who prefer to write sci-fi.

I’m mad that I didn’t realize you don’t need a complex scabbard to carry a sword on your back. However, I still think having a folding sword (one that operates just like an assisted opening pocket knife but bigger, and also having an actual grip with a D shaped guard at the bottom giving you the most reach) with a tight fitting sheath that’s tied to your leg like you would a Bowie knife would be the most convenient and easy to carry and use compared to a back scabbard or a normal scabbard. All you’d have to do is reach down, pull out the 1-2 foot long sword similar to how you would pull out a pistol, then quickly reach over with your offhand as you raise the sword, then press the tab on the back of the blade to quickly flip it out and you’ve got a 4 foot long sword that’s super easy to carry and use

There's a neat little detail with the scabbard for Raiden's sword in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. The scabbard actually moves down so that the sword can be inserted into it without just clipping through it. When I noticed that I was like, "Wow, that's a really cool detail"

I think at least one reason people picture a back scabbard may have to do with media showing it pretty frequently. It looks cooler seeing a guy with a sword in his back and drawing it for maybe a downward swing or something but it wouldn't be practical. Games I think often put it on the back so it doesn't look as weird when inevitably it clips into objects.

  • @karleriknelson8760

I think our history's lack of a back-scabbard was because of the lack of need. In a fantasy world however where there are monsters and magic creates the higher need for mobility. If you're hunting monsters or jumping around like in anime then a weapon that's dangling from your hip would only get in the way.
And by extension female armor would have the same argument. If a women could use magic or were more used in combat then it'd be likely that they'd be brought to battle and eventually ornate-armor for women would be created (thus the infamous boob-armor would be created).

Were there knights or samurai who didn't carry their own weapons and had servants at the ready who carried all their weapons?
