In this video, I will share some of the grading results of my coins that I found either coin roll hunting, through cherry picking, or have had in my collection - through my submissions to PCGS or NGC. I will feature 5 different Indian Head Cents that were submitted for grading and received one of the 3 following grades/designations: - Straight Numerical Grade - Questionable Color - Cleaned (with details) I hope you enjoyed this video and found it informative. I will be doing more videos like this of more of my finds while roll hunting Pennies, Nickels, Dimes, Quarters, Half Dollars and Dollar Coins. Keep hunting and good luck! They're still out there for us to find! @ RobFindsTreasure Rob, You Won't Believe This, Today At Where I Work In The Afternoon, I Opened A Roll Of Nickels For The Register Because We Were Running Out, One Of Them Looked Kinda Odd, It Had A Strange Color, But I Saw Something In That Coin That Got Me Shouting Loudly, I Found A Buffalo Nickel, A 1926 Buffalo Nickel, And The Date On It Was Crystal Clear!!
I remember the shiny indian head cent from when you unboxed it (in the hunt and from PCGS). It's such an awesome coin. I never thought I'd ever see a shiny indian head cent, let alone one still in circulation.
Been waiting for this one for a while. Makes you wonder Iif they just throw darts at a wall for grading. You rock broski! The lack of consistency is disturbing.
Thanks brother - I find copper hard to assess, especially once you get pre-1909. I think they hurry coins along and don't really take pride in the quality assurance part of their job. I know it's easy to judge from a submitter's perspective, but when coins are returned and are deemed cleaned or questionable color, a little commentary from them would be nice.
@@RobFindsTreasure I completely agree. Especially when these colors occur naturally with copper. Plus the stories of people that resubmitted a coin that was deemed questionable the first time or two and then all the sudden on the third try it gets the grade they were looking for. As a regular Joe, you don't get the consideration that the big coin dealers get. Which can literally cost the little guy a lot of money.
That was a great video! PCGS grades about 250,000 coins per month, so I would think if you re-submitted a "questionable" coin, you might get a different grade.
I disagree. The coin looks too pink as if it has been dipped- an original IHC will have a more cherry-red appearance and I’d really hate to see this kind of coin straight grade. If you haven’t already, I’d take a look at BU cents that have been dipped in e zest and you’ll notice exactly what I am talking about
Hey Rob--I like this video format. It was fun to play along and try to guess which ones were which. Of course I failed miserably, but it was interesting to try. Would definitely like to see more of the same.
My guesses as I watch: 04- Questionable color 09- Cleaned Last 3- Straight That 01 is definitely straight, but the toners MIGHT be different Edit: I remember that 01! Yeah definitely crack that out
Indian Head Pennies are tough. It's because of the bronze in the copper mix. Also toning comes from multiple flip exchange. I got the last two as ms condition, but #3 I don't agree with them, I think it's because of the three dots on face side makes it look like it was dipped. #1 & 2 you can see cleanup.
You got bamboozled on the 1901. Definitely agree to crack and resubmit. That is the gem! Thanks for sharing this great video Rob. BTW I was 0 for 5 lol
Lol hey bro! Glad to see you watch Rob like I do 😁 I got 2/5 right (last 2), but I was only guessing lol. Have a good night bro and say hi to Ty and Erin from me 😊
Loved your video Rob, I am no fan of PCGS I've seen way to many coins they got wrong or give crazy grades too but thats me I dont like how inconsistent they are depending on who you get each time.
I believe the first and the third ones get straight grades, second one's been cleaned for sure, you can see at the contour of the face, 4th one has questionable toning, you can tell because the toning is only around the face
wow, I was wrong on all. thought for sure the last 2 were questionable color/cleaned vs. the first three!! Crazy! thanks for sharing this. I love the reveal the grades videos.
Love looking at beautiful IHC. I remembered the 1901 from the unboxing video so got that one right off the bat. Other than that I got all but the 2nd one correct.
I think I was there when Seeker handed you one of the last two and your reaction was priceless because I know he was giving you a hard time about the 1901.
great video Rob, you definitely need to crack out & resubmit that 1901 that you got hosed on, thanks for doing this video, it really helps to understand how your coins should look before you try to send them in for grading 👍
I was 1/5. Number 1 I was on the fence between cleaned/straight grade and decided to go straight and I got number 2 correct. I would crack 3 out for sure and ask if the graders for 4 and 5 are available.
I bought a 1909 s lincoln cent from a reputable dealer that they said was uncirculated and definitely I agree, but when I graded it came back questionable color au 58 details. The coin is ms63 all day long. Your 1901 indian is gem unc maybe 67 or 68 easily.
The coin has 64 details at best. Wayy too many spots for anything above a 5 and the luster is way too weak - not to mention that the color is way too questionable to end up in a straight grade holder. The coin is pink, and original surfaces on IHC should be closer to cherry-red.
Thanks for another video. I Always enjoy videos including graded coins. I was thinking questionable color/cleaned for all 5. From what I have seen with PCGS and NGC and older cents, they seem to like Questionable Color a lot. There are certain things I look for on a coin when looking for cleaning. I primarily sent Morgan and Peace Dollars for grading and do not have much experience with small cents. With Morgan's, if they come back with questionable color, in some cases you can resubmit them through the "restoration" service and they will receive a straight grade. I'm not sure if that works with copper. Artificial toning they won't touch and will just send the coins back.
I wonder if PCGS keeps stats on the percentage of IHCs that get submitted that they determine are non-gradable. I would not be surprised if that percentage is getting bigger over time, I think they are getting tougher and tougher on these
I bought a lincoln cent album and it got wet during shipping. Many of the coins had this intense toning on them as a result. All kinds of iridescent colors. Especially now years later, it looks more natural...and it is in a way if you think about it. It's just environmental damage and discoloration, which is what toning is. But I could see one day some of those coins fetching a premium for their toning when literally all they did was accidentally get wet once.
Rob, the 1901 looks like many of the wheats I clean for my personal collection. The finish is identical to my cleaned pennies. PS. I always mark mine as cleaned with laser etch. That way, if stolen, no profit for the thief. Also, I never do it to valuable coins.
That reminds me that I've seen laser cleaning devices that take off rust and corrosion but are safe on skin. I wonder if they'd clean coins and if so what the telltales would be.
I missed the first one. I thought that one would have gotten a straight grade. I remember the “questionable color” video. I so want to see them update that with a straight grade. Thanks for playing “GUESS…..THAT…..GRADE”! Are there any parting gifts….? 😅🤣
I was only 2 for 5, but even after more than 50 years of coin collecting copper coins are still difficult for me to tell if they have been messed with.
Missed the first one. Got the second one right from the way the color changes from the field going into the lettering. Didn't guess the third but if you look carefully at the color there is a semicircle that's just a bit darker under the bust on the obverse. It looks suspiciously like a finger or thumb may have covered it a bit during a dip, so I get where they are coming from. The toning on Silver Seeker's coin is wild but unless there's a corresponding triangle on the reverse where tweezers might have held it, it's probably legit though I think that toning must be environmental. Congratulations on your Ms64 brown. It's a beautiful coin with great toning and absolutely believable s being legit.
I guessed cleaned, cleaned, straight, q, q. First one just had a weird color... Like it was soaked in vinegar. 2nd one cleaned IMO because of how it's shiny right next to the raised elements and darker in the open spots. The last 3, who knows! #3 definitely crack. Although maybe those little spots are some liquid residue? Wonder if 4 and 5 were dipped in something, graded, then changed color? Is delayed toning a thing??
I can imagine in a slower market the grading companies would have fewer and more experienced graders and your odds of receiving a straight grade might increase as a result. Newbie graders likely too cautious. I’d hold off for another time as it seems too many submissions have been coming back cleaned or questionable. Just my opinion…
Nope not the case. I know personally. To become a coin grader you have to have the right stuff, you have to go through a rigorous three year program and then take a face-to-face live test in Phoenix AZ for your certification. There is no such thing as a newbie grader. If you fail the test you can take it again, if fail the second time, you must repeat the three year process and test again. But if you can't make it then your done. You must also belong to the American Numismatic Association to get started, it's not a free program. The average salary is $500k.
@RobfindstreasureI loved this. You should do this but should look at it together. When you get the box is the mail make a video. You make a guess on what you think it is and we as well make a guess for each coin you look at.
The reason I believe 4th cent was artificially toned, is because of the untoned spots which make me believe it is because the substance that has been added to do the toning might have caused overturning in some spots and missed some other spots, don't judge me here, I'm trying. The last one however I believe has real toning and it's gonna get straight grade.
Got 4 out of 5. The 1901 is definitely QC unfortunately - true RD Indians are less grainy and are a deeper RD. That one just looks a little pale. Either way, I appreciate the video, it was fun to guess the grades!
Got 3/5! The I was sure one of the toners (silver seeker’s) was questionable color/cleaned. Looks like its been rubbed or something, then with those discoloration patches. Hey what do I know, I dont even own any graded coins. I Dont collect them.
Coin number one ms 63 straight grade back to the vid, coin 2 cleaned, coin 3 questionable color. Number 4 cleaned , coin number 5 ms 62 ok let’s see how bad I failed p.s. you didn’t help with all your inflections in your voice lol. Oops And that’s why I’m a rookie lol great video thanks for doing this see you on the next one👍🏻👊🏻
I said in order... QC Cleaned Cleaned Grade 62 Grade 63 I thought I did well considering I don't grade coins - and certainly not US coins - this was from watching your channel, Rob! Sorry for your results, though! 😥 👍 Great content again!
The way you get that 1901 pcgs graded is, send it in with a stack of your oldest red bu condition wheaties so it doesnt stick out and seem not right. I dont think it is dipped or anything but, if you have other copper that looks the same l, it should be obvious to them that the finish is authentic. That is, imo anyways
My take, without seeing the ending, the only straight grade is the 09 and I’d guess MS62, questionable color on the 04,02, and NGC 09 and cleaned on the 01. Copper is tough. I hope I’m wrong 🐵
1. I said environmental, I do not see any cleaning scratches like the normal micro scratches you see on a Morgan when its cleaned 2. I saw nothing wrong with it so I had no clue what to say. 3. I said environmental damage due to the spots 4. Questionable color just because of the toning, but they gave it a grade I would almost say crack the 1st 3 and resubmit them at this point they might have had 1 too many the night before. 5. I did give MS but any more then that I didn't know what else to give it
My guesses (will be Editing as I go) Coin #1: MS details cleaned Coin #2 MS61RB Coin #3 MS details questionable color (I remember the coin though) Coin #4 MS details questionable color Coin #5 MS62BN
Knowing that copper oxidizes over time, it is hard to understand how there can be any red blazing cents that old in this day and age, unless they were kept in a zero humidity environment
Why does the 1902 get a straight grade but not the 1901? You'd think it might be the opposite. Honestly still salty at PCGS for that 1901 you had. Absolute blazer, nothing wrong with it. That sucks. I agree I'd crack it open. Maybe send it to NGC?
One of the reasons I dislike grading companies is if you get the wrong grader on the wrong day you end up with a perfect coin coming back "cleaned" or vice versa. It's all a crap shoot. If you resubmitted those 5 coins 5 more times you would most likely get different grades/attributions each time. They don't care as they get paid either way. They tend to screw over the little guys coins and give the big wigs the top grades.
My initial thoughts before looking at the results! 1. Straight grade (MS60-62) 2. Cleaned UNC details 3. Questionable Color ( only say that because I remember it, but it's not! SHOULD be a top pop) 4. Questionable Color 5. Straight Grade (MS 62+-63+) I did ok, IHP's just frustrate me! The 1901 really deserves better. I'd crack it open for sure. It's just too Beautiful to be graded poorly. I believe it deserves MS66 or higher.
In this video, I will share some of the grading results of my coins that I found either coin roll hunting, through cherry picking, or have had in my collection - through my submissions to PCGS or NGC. Cool video, Rob. I guessed the first one as cleaned but that's as far as I got. I have found a few Indian Heads roll hunting but nothing like these.
Nice Indian Head cents. I enjoyed guessing what they got.
Holy moly. I sure hope some straight grades --

Good lookin cents for sure.
i thought the first 4 were details and the last ms 63. the first, i thought was details scratched, you could park a mack truck in that face gouge
I went 5/5, although that 1901 I watched the submission video for when it first came out and so I already knew. So I guess 4/4.

I've had a few coins (not IHC) come back with questionable color. I still can't figure out what graders see to make that determination.

Before the video, I guess PCGS said all were cleaned or questionable color. Lets find out!
Cleaned on the first, second good grade straight grade, third great stunner grade, fourth questionable color, and fifth questionable grade
I said in order...
QC
Cleaned
Cleaned
Grade 62
Grade 63
I thought I did well considering I don't grade coins - and certainly not US coins - this was from watching your channel, Rob!
Sorry for your results, though! 😥

Copper coins are just plain crazy to get graded.
That 1901 needs to go back or go to NGC. Nice coin
I was right first 3 and only one point higher in the grading
My take, without seeing the ending, the only straight grade is the 09 and I’d guess MS62, questionable color on the 04,02, and NGC 09 and cleaned on the 01. Copper is tough. I hope I’m wrong 🐵
Well I’ll be dipped!! I don’t know nuttin!!
1:XF
2:VF
3:?able Color (dead giveaway because he was talking about it in a stream)
4:Cleaned
5:Cleaned. HOPE I DID WELL

I would send the 1901 to ngc and try again good luck
1. I said environmental, I do not see any cleaning scratches like the normal micro scratches you see on a Morgan when its cleaned
2. I saw nothing wrong with it so I had no clue what to say.
3. I said environmental damage due to the spots
4. Questionable color just because of the toning, but they gave it a grade I would almost say crack the 1st 3 and resubmit them at this point they might have had 1 too many the night before.
5. I did give MS but any more then that I didn't know what else to give it
Love the vids rob
So, Rob... do you HAVE to give that one back to Seeker?? ;-)
I am hoping he forgets about it... LOL
Wonder if u could do this with flying eagle cents?🤔
I’ve had a flying eagle for a couple years and have yet to submit it
My guesses (will be Editing as I go)
Coin #1: MS details cleaned
Coin #2 MS61RB
Coin #3 MS details questionable color (I remember the coin though)
Coin #4 MS details questionable color
Coin #5 MS62BN
Got 2/5, that 1909 at the end was most unexpected for me though!
Indians are my favorite coins
I got 4/5 …I thought the second one would have a straight grade- The 1901 should not be questionable color! It is just too nice for PCGS.
I got right only the cleaned ones.
Let's go!
Knowing that copper oxidizes over time, it is hard to understand how there can be any red blazing cents that old in this day and age, unless they were kept in a zero humidity environment
All those Indians are beautiful.
Every coin submitted is at the Mercy of the graders. In many cases, it's a coin con game and the submitter will be screwed in the end.
Why does the 1902 get a straight grade but not the 1901? You'd think it might be the opposite. Honestly still salty at PCGS for that 1901 you had. Absolute blazer, nothing wrong with it. That sucks. I agree I'd crack it open. Maybe send it to NGC?
Try ngc on that 1901
1st 4th 5th straight grade, 2nd ??color, 3rd cleaned! 40%. Failing grade for me!
Guess 1904 cleaned, 1909 questionable color, 1901 cleaned, 1902 questionable color & 1909 straight grade are my guesses.
I got 1/5 I’m happy with that
Show us the video unboxing. My guess is 67,68 plus for each.
Luv dat 1901
This was fun
My initial thoughts before looking at the results!
1. Straight grade (MS60-62)
2. Cleaned UNC details
3. Questionable Color ( only say that because I remember it, but it's not! SHOULD be a top pop)
4. Questionable Color
5. Straight Grade (MS 62+-63+)
I did ok, IHP's just frustrate me! The
1901 really deserves better. I'd crack it open for sure. It's just too Beautiful to be graded poorly. I believe it deserves MS66 or higher.
I flunked the test. Lol
The 1901 has been dipped for sure
I went 3/5 and I am still upset about that 1901 it's flawless!
Yup... Sounds like everyone's normal result with the graders.... I remember that penny from the original, questionable color? Ridiculous...
I got the second and the fifth ones right, but still the third and fourth are graded wrong.
Just proved to myself I wasn't meant to be a coin grader.
