    Great project. I wish you were around when I first started collecting coins and indian head pennies being my favorite coins. Suggestion. Those lower grade duplicates that are NGC graded. You should give that in a package to a young collector starting out. They will be soooo excited just to have a graded coin even if it isn't worth that much. Thanks for your amazing contribution to coin collecting. Would love to travel to see your store. I'm from KC.

    I don't think I have seen so many IHC's come back from NGC without a questionable color designation or two! By the way, just got my 1877 in the mail from you. Couldn't be happier!

    Awesome job on this. First of all... NO DETAILS! That is always a win. And you were accurate in that each coin got a higher grade than the coin before it. Nicely done for sure. Cheers!

    I really like this idea! The problems with it though is that each year will have different variables, the mint will have different variable, and the graders will have different variables. You can fix 2 of those problems, but unless you get the same grader, you’ll always get a different grade. Ben your consistency of numismatics keeps me going!

      That's what I thought too. It's a nice coin but has an awful lot of wear for a 53. The ribbon is worn smooth in the middle and there's barely separation between the hair and ribbon.

  • @JohnD357

    Further proof that NGC can't grade Indian cents. Ben, your call on the grades was much better than what you got with NGC. That's especially true of those VF coins. The one called VF-35 is definitely an XF coin The first one you showed that they graded VF-20 is no better than an F-12 coin.
    Something that proves the nonsense of some grading is the four steps that exist in the VF range. They should publish what counts as VF-20, VF-25, VF-30, and VF-35. I'll bet there's no consistency at all.
    Thanks again Ben for the great video.

    • @jeffw1267
      @jeffw1267 3 года назад +1

      The problem is that different people will always see it differently. The VF35 has no separation between the ribbon and hair curl, and therefore has to grade below 40 in my opinion. But NGC in particular often slabs that kind of coin as XF.

  • @jamessampson5992
    @jamessampson5992 3 года назад +1

    Ben- does the standards slightly change year to year... mint to mint... just because, I know that certain yr/mm are known to have weaker strike ect. Like on one of those coins they may be a little more forgiving because thats just how they come....
    Great video brosif

    • @TheCoinGeek
      @TheCoinGeek  3 года назад

      Strike etc is more of an issue on silver coins- but it is still a reality of all issues -

  • @coreynagle804

    I feel like my grading has plateaued at MS64 I can't seem to be able to tell the diffrance between a great MS64 and a lower MS65. I have had some sure things that came back MS64. Nothing higher.

  • @paulbegansky5650
    @paulbegansky5650 3 года назад +3

    Nice try, but I was under the impression that the grade is also relative to the year and mint mark. By having different years and mint marks the grades could be slightly different . Each coin must be the same year and mint then grade from G TO AU

    • @JohnD357
      @JohnD357 3 года назад +3

      Why would that be the case within a series. Ben correctly didn't include the 1859 to 1864 Copper Nickel range because they would wear differently. But an 1890 Indian isn't going to wear any differently than a 1909 Indian.

    • @paulbegansky5650
      @paulbegansky5650 3 года назад +1

      @@JohnD357 because coin grading companies give grades differently on different years and different mint marks. A F12 on a 1900 Indian head could be a 10 or grade higher on a 1901 Indian head or D mint vs S mint mark. Not to mention differences from NGC to PCGS. For this to be accurate, all coins need to be same year and mint mark.

    • @JohnD357
      @JohnD357 3 года назад +3

      @@paulbegansky5650 If that's true, then it proves even more that these professional grading companies are a scam. Identical wear on two different coins of the same series should never be two different grades because of their dates. That makes no sense on its face.

    • @paulbegansky5650
      @paulbegansky5650 3 года назад +1

      @@JohnD357 exactly, what I am saying. The companies are inconsistent to fraudulent as different graders give different grades for the same coin. Grading changes from year to year and mint mark to mint mark. For you to create a mint set of each grade, you need to set certain variables. All the same year. All the same mint. All the same grading company (which was done). All graded by the same people and graded at the same time. That is the scientific approach. The you could show further irregularities by comparing an NGC 1901 no mint mark F12 vs a 1902 no mark F12 or PCGS 1901 no mark F12.

    • @JohnD357
      @JohnD357 3 года назад +1

      @@paulbegansky5650 I get where you're coming from now. You and I are on the same page then. This means that the overall goal of PCGS in the beginning has never been met and never will be. If you recall, their goal was to create grading standards in such a way that coins could become commodities to be traded sight unseen between dealers. An F-12 Indian is like any other F-12 Indian and can be traded as a commodity because the dealer would know what they're getting. I always knew that was a pipe dream, but now it's just laughable.

    For some reason in unbeknownst to me I pictured several elderly gents with 2 inch thick glasses converging around a table with an operating room light arguing over what grade to place on any given coin. Certainly that is not the case. Grading is subjective and too opinionated for my liking to submit. Personally filling albums with the best coin I can afford in raw form is more fun than relying on someone's opinion.

    That def doesn’t look VF to me though
    I also agree that 1908 is NOT XF. Owners bias Ben.. tisk tisk
    It’s 30/35... not enough to be EXTREMELY FINE (pet peeve alert - I hate people calling XF extra fine .. god don’t people know proper adverbial placement ??? What’s the world coming to ....
