'I'll never put a f**king bad riff on an album in my life'. From anyone else it would sound arrogant, from Matt Pike it just sounds like an immutable truth.

Koffie Verslaafde but honestly, Matt is an objectively better riff writer than 99.9% of guitarists. Whether you like his bands or not, it’s impossible to deny his influence on modern metal and his ability to write catchy riffs. I don’t think there are very many guitarists who would say that they’re better riff writers than Matt Pike. I could maybe name 2-3 tops.

I don’t know man he’s a great songwriter but some of his stuff is pretty underwhelming. I don’t look for complexity either I believe in serving the songs and he does that well. It’s not a competition of who in Metal can write better riffs but as a guy who really popularized this kind of doom and “sludge” (yikes) stuff he’s pretty untouchable but nothing he does is particularly memorable. You could take a bunch of power chords and add extensions on top and play them slowly all day but it’s the context that counts.
Matt Pike never fails to make me want to pick up my guitar.

Seeing Pike nervous, when put on the spot, makes me feel better about my own (musical) performance anxiety.
By the way, Matt is available for children's parties. I hired him and it was an experience I'll never forget. A memorable moment: the children requested a song called "baby shark" and Matt knew it! He said "how about 'Baby Shark' in C?" Afterwards he dressed up like Conan and showed the children how to properly smash a pinata for its spoils.

What tuning is he in? From where his left hand is at when he plays the G power chord, it should be C tuning (2 whole steps down from standard), but the open palm-muted part almost sounds like a B or even an A

oh holy shit that tone. somebody explain to me how to get that tone! ive got a mesa electradyne and a bass big muff...it sounds great on the clean channel with the big muff on but its just not as amazing as this! les pauls, a telecaster with humbuckers, and a strat with single coils. amazing tone in this vid haha

Those trills he played on the thicker strings are barely audible. It sounds like he turned up the midrange and bass, turned the treble all the way down, and submerged his amp into a giant vat of peanut butter.
Actually turns the mids back and cranks the treble.
