The Pashtun are problems in Afghanistan. He stated that there should be no forced labour, tyranny or oppression, and that Afghanistan should be free and independent and no longer bound by the Treaty of Gandamak.[11] Amanullah had his uncle Nasrullah arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment for Habibullah's murder. Nasrullah had been the leader of a more conservative element in Afghanistan and his treatment rendered Amanullah's position as Amir somewhat tenuous. The inevitability of invading British India is hard to understand. Just claiming independence and ceasing all compliance with British India would have had the same outcome as invasion (independence, end of British political interference, end of British subsidies coming in and formalised Durand line) minus the Afghan military defeats. The worst that might have happened is a British Invasion as a reprisal (unlikely considering British problems in India and post WWI) which would have gone the same way (or perhaps better for Afghans) as the defence of India from the 1919 invasion. The only thing Amanullah had to gain from a military invasion was moving the afghan border into British India, which failed at the cost of over a thousand Afghan, and 236 British & Indian lives.

@@HikmaHistory you should look into Muhammadiyah in Indonesia, it's the largest Islamic modernist organization there and quite possibly the world.

The inevitability of invading British India is hard to understand. Just claiming independence and ceasing all compliance with British India would have had the same outcome as invasion (independence, end of British political interference, end of British subsidies coming in and formalised Durand line) minus the Afghan military defeats.
The worst that might have happened is a British Invasion as a reprisal (unlikely considering British problems in India and post WWI) which would have gone the same way (or perhaps better for Afghans) as the defence of India from the 1919 invasion.
The only thing Amanullah had to gain from a military invasion was moving the afghan border into British India, which failed at the cost of over a thousand Afghan, and 236 British & Indian lives.
