Afghanistan was a peaceful country when king Zahir Shah was king. But after the monarch overthrown by rascal Daud khan, unrest continue until now. If monarch exist now in Afghanistan, then situation never deteriorate like Teliban arrival.

You have to understand warfare has been a part of Afghanistan’s history for millennia. It’s called the Graveyard of Empires for a reason. If the monarchy didn’t survive, I’d imagine that the Taliban won’t last forever either. And keep in mind, the king was overthrown by his own cousin, who could’ve made himself king , but he instead dispensed with all royal titles and made himself president instead.

A problem particularly in the muslim world is the lack of secularism. Religion should have no bearing on the running of the state. But if one were to impose this on Afghanistan it would be presumptuous and take their right to self determination.
The simple fact is the Afghan people do indeed support the Taliban and denying this is to deny the will of the Afghan people.
I'd say do nation building starting with secular schooling, give them the means to create the nation they deserve and choose.

". . . Afghans look to the reign of the last King, Zahir Shah with a sense of nostalgia for a time and place that was once peaceful and stable."
This also somewhat applies to Egypt.
Since their Revolution of '52, forcing King Farouk into exile, they have endured a succession of dictators, some benevolent such as Anwar el Sadat (but they murdered him) and General Naguib who was the leader of the coup but, who sued for the gentle approach and did prevail, obtaining thus a peaceful, bloodless parting complete with 21-gun salute as the magnificent Royal Yacht Mahroussa sailed-off into the sunset but, most NOT-so.
That correct peaceful action will be to the eternal CREDIT of Egypt!! (Compare this to the Bolsheviks and that horror in 1918, and also I guess, to the French and their revolutionary experiment.)
Seemingly 'The People' never are to learn that -- there is much difference existing between in-the-pot simmering, and out in the fire roasting!!
Same here in the U.S. Yes, everywhere generally it seems a 'stupid people' problem. (Or, as peoples' having been MADE as stupefied! But that would be a whole other level of to-the-bone wickedness, would it not?)
King Zahir Shah was in-tight with King Farouk. I've a photo of them together, Zahir Shah visiting at Cairo. They had exchanged their orders as is usual, and so he wore the Grand Collar of the Order of Mohammad Ali for that time, and King Farouk the Afghani equivalent the same. Very nice, peaceful and orderly and, mutually-respectful.

They are all loved by everyone.

Don't test democracy on Muslim people. They generally do well under leaders like ayotollah, Saddam Hussein, hosni Mubarak, Gaddafi or a monarchy or generals like Pakistan.

I have a letter from a friend who was in Kabul when the coup took place. He said there were soldiers wearing WW2 style German helmets on the streets and tanks at the corners. He said “l’m getting out of here!” (He made it)
Lets hope policy is centred on peace and stability rather than power for power’s sake. (Not holding my breath )

Analysing the history of Afghanistan. I strongly believe had the 1973 july 16th military coup is a significant day in world history a turning point. If that coup did not happen all likelyhood, the soviet invasion probably would not happen US+Pakistani involvement in the 1980s would not have happened. Soviet Union might not have collapsed since afghan war was cited as a key factor in the Soviet Union coming to an end. The tit for tat boycotts by the cold war east west powers of US and Russia at the Olympics would not have happened and most importantly. There would have been 42 years of peace and stabiliy and even prosperity for Afghan people rather than continuous war and refugee crisis of Afghans fleeing their country to all corners of the earth if the coup of 1973 and king being deposed did not happen. Also which would not have happened is the Taliban coming ot power in the 1990s. US and coalition invading Afghanistan in 2001 due to 9/11 an. d Bin laden being in Afganistan fighting the soviets. The last 20 years of the US plus sixty nation coalition where thousands of Americans would not have lost their lives, 456 Britons losing their lives, a similar number of Aussies and others being militarily defeated over the last 20 years with the US evacuating from rooftops in helicopters a weeks ago in August 2021, earily similar to US withdrawal from Vietnam. All this catastrophe and disaster for so many countries that got involved in Afghanistan in modern times would not have probably happened if a chain of events lasting 47 years was not triggered by a quiet well executed military coup taken place by King Zahir Shah's royal cousin Doud on the morning of 16th July 1973 while the King was visiting London and vacationing in Italy. One day in July 1973, one day thats all it took to change the direction of Afghanistan and dare I say it the world. On such key moments is world history made. Amazing when you think about it. I wonder if Doud would have carried out the military coup if someone from the future visited him and told him this is what would happen to Afghanistan, its people and the world if you did. My guess is he would have definitely called the military coup off if he knew the pain and suffering the Afghan people had to endure because of this key event. Thats just my opinnion of the whole Afghanistan situation. I would like to know what others think.

Love your butterfly effect analysis of Afghanistan's history and more. You can say that about other historical events that if it didn't happen other events wouldn't have. Like if Archduke Ferdinand wasn't assainated in 1914 WW1, Hitler, and WW2 wouldn't have happened.

It was a silly thing to overthrow the monarchy. The ambitious Daoud paid for this with his life.

The shootout which ended Daoud's life also saw his wife, two of his brothers, four of his children, five of his young grandchildren and all of his right-hand men and security killed as well.
So, yes, he and his family and friends paid very dearly for this.

@@gmicg Considering Daoud's overthrow and being gunned down in a bloodbath led to open unrest, forcing the Soviet Union to invade Afghanistan 20 months later, the coup was the foundation stone on the path to hell.
As it stands, there is strong resistance to the Taliban, with armed rebellion in Panjshir Valley and large demonstrations elsewhere, along with the Afghan economy being on the brink of collapse: this path may see a few more turns yet.
