  • This is the remarkable story of an exceptional replica, built by the South African luthier Hans van den Berg, of the famous FE 17 classical guitar originally crafted by Antonio de Torres in 1864. This documentary features various charming pieces composed by Francisco Tárrega, beautifully played by the South African guitarist Abri Jordaan on this FE17 replica.

The player mentions a shorter scale length. In my copy of masterpieces of guitar making, on page 185 where it gives the measurements of the 1864 it gives the scale length of 650 mm which is the standard scale length. Was there a misprint? Interestingly in the Romanillos book gives the scale as 645 - slight shorter but not much. The Romanillos book and the Grondona & Waldner book also disagree on the waist of the instrument, Romanilos gives it as 227 whereas the other book gives it as 208. The other measurments (body length, lower bout, upper bout, body depths etc. are all within a millimeter of each other.

I just purchased a Torres replica FE 17 Spruce/Maple classical guitar the other day and the scale length was listed 640mm. Now, the instrument is yet to arrive, however, I assumed that the luthier (Jellinghaus) did extensive research before construction. That being said, I believe the most important things to consider are sound, intonation, and playability. I am excited about playing this magnificent instrument. If it is made with the same attention to detail as my Jellinghaus Signature model, I should be exceedingly happy.

Dear Pieter, It was so nice to meet you in South Africa. The guitar presented in this video is really fantastic, it sounds even better when played live, as I had the chance to do in Abri's home. The work of Hans is really exceptional. Congratulations on this project! The Torres SE30 La Perla guitar has now it's own documentary too. Have a look if you like: ruclips.net/video/sgCweC22QhI/видео.html greetings, Rody

Wonderful story of the creation of this very special guitar. I'm very curious why it was made without a tornavoz. The Michael Thames-made FE-17 replica that motivated the client to commission this replica included a tornavoz, so I am surprised the client didn't insist on one. I even noticed a tornavoz on your workbench at 1:11 into the video. Was there a specific reason for the choice not to install one?

Dear Robert Willis. I apologize for the late reply. The tornavoz should have been there - the replica was intended to be "complete" - however, we were hesitant (did not quite have the balls...). Obviously Hans van den Berg had no previous experience with a tornavoz (how many luthiers have?), and I, as client, was fearful that the project may be compromised. We did not know whether we should or shouldn't've. Hans even made one - he is a tool maker/metal worker by trade -, the one you noticed, and he fitted it to an old guitar, where we could compare "before" and "alter" sound. We did not hear enough of a difference to convince us to take the "risk" on our Torres FE17 replica. Today I realise that our "test" was not a fair one. We will never know whether the tornavoz may have improve our sound even further... Kind regards, Pieter Henning (pieter@pieterhenning.co.za)

I appreciate receiving such an honest and thoughtful reply. I have been curious about your decision on the tornavoz and am glad to understand the reasons for your choice. I own a Michael Thames FE-17 copy with a tornavoz, one essentially the same as the instruments played by Richard Savino in the video that appears to have inspired your reproduction project. Not yet being as accomplished a player as you are, I don't feel like an authority on the contribution to the sound made by this antiquainted feature. However, I opted in favor its inclusion largely because I wanted a guitar as close to those Richard had played in that notably impresssive video. Michael Thames, who lives quite close to my house in Santa Fe, NM, produces many Torres replicas and asked my preference on the tornavoz before building. My guitar instructor has two different model Torres reproductions (without the tornavoz) made by Michael Thames, and several of Michael's more modern guitars as well. While he plays the modern guitars in concerts for projection, I can see that his favorite guitars are the slightly smaller bodied Torres replica guitars with their exquisitely expressive voice and tone. I very much admire the great effort and loving sensitivity you invested in your recreation of one of the world's most beautiful, and historicaly significant, guitars. I am very grateful for your rpely and for your making such a beautiful video to document the fascinating production of your instrument. @@pieterhenning1235

Great sounding instrument. Not everyone captures the old sound, it takes courage and probably much attention to materials selection to use the old dimensions.
