Mårten, this video was incredible. It was like attending a university lecture given by your favorite professor. Thank you! And please continue to share your abundant knowledge with us, we very much appreciate it!
Dear Marten I stumbled upon your video playing music by Tarrega last night and you moved my heart and sound . I thank you for your response . Tonight I listened to this lecture on The Tarrega style of playing and you stimulated my brain . It was a fabulous lecture on the the use of various techniques to make the music more emotive . I too love Schnabel and recall that he was the first pianist to play and record on 78 RPM all of his sonatas mistakes and all . He refused to re-record the errors as it would detract from the musicianship . Fabulous lecture and I would love to hear a lecture on the Torres guitar and the influence on the classical guitar playing and construction . I see you play a Romanillos which is my favorite . What are your feelings about lattice top guitars and the German school of guitar luthiers ? More lectures !
Many thanks! I am very happy that you like it. I hope to make many more lectures, but I need to learn how to edit a video - this one was made in just one take and with my mobile phone and I make a couple of errors... I am terrible with computers. You ask about my feelings about lattice tops and the German school (I assume you are thinking of the double tops). I am personally not a fan of these guitars. I think the Torres/Hauser spruce guitar is unsurpassed when it comes to the tonal qualities and musical sensitivity. I have tried many Dammann and Smallman guitars but they are not at all to my liking. But if someone finds them inspiring - good for them!
Hi! Most humbly thanks Mårten! So interesting to listening to you talking about this topic! For me it`s very valuable to get this in a context, getting to know the era better. The freedom in, wile playing and interpret music from this time of period is something that is appealing to me! Really nice! Fin tydlighet! Åter igen: Stort tack för din generositet! //Tobias
It was a pleasant surprise to find your channel. Quite a unique angle, not to mention we got Tarrega's lineage here with personal likeness on top. One thing about the picture: white balance is jumping a lot, it is either set it to manual or wear a darker shirt (the white one throws it off as you move) .
Thanks, I am happy you liked it! Yes, I am terrible when it comes to all kinds of machines, including recording machines. I will try to avoid that problem in the next video!
What a great lecture! I play the harp, but I also occasionally play guitar. We can’t have nails in harp so I am always looking to learn as much about no nail guitar playing.
I played until I was 10 years old without nails, playing with nails only affects timbre, neither fluency nor strength of tone is affected! But provided that the basic tone in the position of the hands, landing and adaptability to the instrument is well established! Played a concerto with an orchestra with good balance.
Very interesting Marten, thank you for recording this! I've just been experimenting playing some Llobet, thinking about what you said about glissandi and vibrato. Very useful! One small correction: you said Daniel Fortea played with nails -- as far as I'm aware, he played without nails (except for the thumb -- the opposite of Aguado).
Thanks! And you are right, he used only the thumb nail, I should have clarified that... (I suspect he started with nails though becaus he studied with Tárrega before he changed his technique to no nails).
Very, very insightful and a great introduction to the Tarrega school. Thank you so much for sharing your valuable knowledge!
This is the best instruction video I’ve ever watched. Thank you!
Fascinating. This is incredibly illuminating and informative. Thank you.

Interesting information Tárrega played using his nails, but also played without nails, but always achieved the quintessence of sound.
