  • This 45-mile loop was an excellent way to experience the best of backpacking in the Wind River Range of Wyoming. See some of the most-visited sites of the Winds, including Seneca lake, Island Lake, Titcomb Basin and Elbow Lake, as well as some of the most amazing terrain I've had the pleasure to hike through. Bonus: I'll show exactly how to locate the Big Water Slide near Fremont Crossing!

    Great Trip !
    This loop was my first backpacking trip 52 years ago - we went clockwise. The only bridge was at Pine Creek. We were out a week and did not see another person, I did this trip in the summer of '22 on the 50th anniversary of the first tip and there were sooooo many people ! I should have repeated this trip much earlier than i did -- and I will be back again soon.

    Thanks for sharing your experience with us. That was a pretty ambitious route in just four days. I hiked for the first time in the Winds this past Sept and covered 40 miles in 4 nights/5days. That was enough for me because as you pointed out the elevation combined with the rockiness of many trails doesn’t make for quick travel. Plus there is the gawk factor that the Winds cause you to do at every turn and summit or pass. It is a beautiful area and truly a gem. I hope you’re surviving winter well up your way. It looks like the snows have been coming nonstop lately.

      @ShastaBubba  2 года назад

      Thanks for watching! I completely agree with the "gawk factor" in the Winds. Only other place I've experienced something similar is the Beartooth Plateau in MT.
      Surviving winter just fine, thanks to a big load of firewood. ;-) In NW MT, we had a brutal Nov, and Dec, with cold and snow, but Jan so far is mostly dry and warmer than usual, so balancing out, I guess.

      @@ShastaBubba glad to hear winter has eased up some. I’ll have to do a little more research on the Beartooth Mountains area. I drove near that area as I headed east this Sept after my hike in the Winds and a visit in Northern Idaho. My wife is from that area (N. Idaho).

      @wanttogo Lots of great hiking trails in N ID too! Also love the Cabinets along the border with MT for a one or two night trip.

    Did almost same trip but opposite direction going clockwise… and also just 3 days after that blow down! From Glimpse lake to Big Trapper Lake was completely blow down and slow going then also camped at Borum but on opposite end where you camped. Next day my trip differs by going over Shannon Pass and up just a 1000 ft below Knapsack Col where I cowboyed camped the 2nd night. Next morning up and over Knapsack Col( which btw you really need to add this on “to do list”) down they Titcomb Basin which your correct is one of the highlights of the Winds.. final campsite was in between little Seneca Lake and Seneca Lake…next day about 5.5 miles from Elkhart TH was bumping into people asking “ is there anymore blowdown’s? To which I learned that 5 miles of blowdown was between me and the TH….actually went off trail staying to the north of Pole Creek trail but there were still plenty blowdown’s as well … awesome video though enjoyed watching and bringing back memories for me

      Hey, thanks so much and I agree, this is one of the best loop hikes in the Winds. Really debated doing Knapsack Col, but ultimately decided against it this time, so you're right, I'll have to go again!
      You have my sympathy for hiking through that blow down. Must have been a nightmare!

      @ Dennis Pixton I’m curious, did you make the trip you described in later Aug/early Sept? I’m guessing much earlier and the snow level through Knapsack Col could be difficult to traverse. I’m trying to plan a little less traveled route through Titcomb basin for this next summer.

    Well that was 34 minutes of time I'll never get back...AND I DON'T MIND ONE BIT! Absolutely stunning views well captured in this video. Especially when viewed on my 60" man cave tv. This one is in my top 5 for YT Winds videos, no BS. For a flatlander, this is pure eye candy. And I'm stingy with superlatives. Spent my first ten days in the Winds last summer in the Green River Lakes area and it still wasn't enough time to take it all in. Thanks for the vicarious tour of this part of the Winds!!!

    Great video! Love seeing some of the same trail that I hit last year... except everything was clouded in the day I was in Titcomb. Glad I got to see it in your video. Love that there are so many routes there! Great trip!

      Hey, thanks so much! I've watched many of your awesome videos in preparation for some of my trips, so thanks for that too! I was all set to hike the Salmo-Priest loop this summer with my great nephew, but had to shift to the Kettle Crest trail due to a fire at the last minute.

    • @mountainwanderer
      @mountainwanderer 2 года назад

      @@ShastaBubba The Kettle Crest is something that I want to do too! It seems that in the past few years there is always a fire in the Salmo-Priest!

    • @ShastaBubba
      @ShastaBubba  2 года назад +1

      @@mountainwanderer If you do the Kettle Crest, I suggest going a bit earlier in the year than we did. By mid August, most of the springs were dry (and it was smoky, of course). The Snow Peak Cabin was one of the cleanest I've seen, so worth timing a hike with renting that, if possible.
