  • Many South Africans have mixed feelings about FW de Klerk. The last apartheid leader passed away at the age of 85 following a battle with asbestos cancer. In the wake of his passing, the FW de Klerk foundation released a pre-recorded video, his last message to the nation. For more, eNCA speaks to Executive Director of the FW De Klerk Foundation Dave Steward, PAC President Mzwanele Nyhontso and former anti apartheid activist Father Michael Lapsley. Courtesy #DStv403

Nyhontso criticises whites for calling themselves "Europeans" and thus saying we whites have no right to be here. He mentions the 1820 settlers. He seems to have wiped out a people calling themselves AFRIKANERS (the Afrikaans word for "Africans" . . . who clearly, long ago in history, said they are no longer Europeans. I truly do not know how he gets to the logic of this land belonging only to Africans. Many Africans who came down south here were "settlers" and "colonial conquerers" too. Someone please explain to me the basis for his argument. Also, like Afro-Americans, I do think we whites should more accurately call ourselves Euro-Africans, instead of just "Europeans". Just like the blacks in America acknowledge they are no longer pure Africans, we whites here should acknowledge, and most of us do, our very deep sense of being rooted in Africa.

Theo! I understand all the pain of the victims, and the anger. But making a statement like "the one who owns the land has the means of production" is a highly simplistic statement! Production comes from an incredible accumulation of knowledge and skill, organisational abilities, business acumen, etc. etc. It takes education and experience and land without all those other things = a land lying fallow. I, a white man, regularly tells ex-National party whites that the fact is that due to the apartheid regime we lost out on 50 years of education . . .We could have had a far more skilled, educated multi-racial community if it was not for that. Usually the response is anger towards me . . .people don't want to feel guilty . . .
